Marco is absolutely great! He teaches you what you want to learn and structures the lesson plan around your custom needs. Each class builds upon the previous ones, and he makes sure to remind you of important points and techniques to improve your work should you forget. I would've completely forgotten about the importance of varying my line weights had he not reminded me at the end of my assignments! Marco is also really sweet and fun to talk to, so every class is an enjoyable experience. He has a great sense of humor, but knows when to be serious and stern because he wants you to succeed as much as you do. Great guy and great teacher! (And his milk tea is quite the bonus!)

I gave KGA a challenge full bathroom remodel in a week in a 100 year old house! We did the painting and some Sheetrock. But he reconfigured the bathroom and major plumbing relocation new shower and tile floor. They finished by deadline (shower door was custom so that got installed a little later). He was clean and thorough. He gave great advice and listened to what I was looking for. I can't wait for our kitchen remodel!

After checking out a few Architects, we decided to hire the Tommasini Design Group to help us with our remodel in South Lake Tahoe. What I really like about Mike is that he is a very "Hands On" guy and is fully involved in all aspects of the project. He gave us some great suggestions and followed that with some beautiful renditions of what our house would look like. We were also impressed with how knowledgeable he is about construction and all the code requirements. The plans he presented to us were very detailed and complete. Even the Building Official in SLT commented how well it was done and we were able to get our permit without any problem at all. It was a pleasure working with him and we highly recommend him for any design work you need done. Thanks Mike for a job well done!

Pro-Built Construction put in my backyard in my new home in El Dorado Hills and I could not be happier! Brent made us a partnership in that he always included me in the decision making process to come up with the best results; he is always interested in your point of view. The outstanding quality of his work is a result of his extensive knowledge of the trade and the guys he has working for him; work was very organized and there was always a crew working 5 days a week, barring weather issues. A very professional organization!

We have had several projects in the last eighteen months: Rebuilt front porch because of dry-rot; replaced double front entry doors and painted them; installed two custom built handrails; installed new back door, weatherproofed all windows; refurbished a bathroom - new sink and vanity top, new shower doors, new toilet, new light fixture, new floor and final painting. All projects completed in a timely manner and to our satisfaction. An easy going guy, friendly and honest and always ready to give constructive suggestions.

We have contracted with Peter Hind on two occasions for work on our house. One was a complete remodel of a bathroom and the other was a re-build of a staircase going to a second story deck. The bath remodel (which included complete gutting of the room) was accomplished well within the time allotted and on budget. The job was done to perfection with Pete giving every aspect of it his personal attention. The second job involved the re-building of the staircase got complicated because we added one of those "by the way while you're at it" jobs to replace a large window in our hobby/game room. This turned out to be more work than any of us expected because of an enormous amount of dry rot repair. Pete took the whole thing in stride and completed both jobs in a professional and timely manner. The stairs definitely exceeded my expectations and the window replacement with all its added work turned out very well. Peter Hind is a professional who truly cares about the quality of his work and customer satisfaction. He relates well to the customer and stands behind his work 100%. We highly recommend Peter Hind as a General Contractor. Larry and Sharon Wusk

Shawn Boelman is an honest, skilled craftsman who works within budget and on time! I fully recommend him. I have known Shawn for several years. He first came to my home as a subcontractor on a house expansion project. His work ethic, courtesy, and attention to the job were superior. Since completion of the initial project, I have directly hired Shawn to complete smaller jobs on my property. In every case, Shawn told me in advance how long the job would take, what costs were involved, and fulfilled my expectations. For just about any future project that I needed skilled help, I would hire Shawn Boelman. You should too!

It gives me great pleasure to write this recommendation letter on behalf of Equinox. I own two rental properties in the cities of Napa and American Canyon. Last year, Equinox repaired my property in Napa. This job included the painting of the exterior of the building made of stucco and wood. Equinox performed exceptionally well and went above and beyond by making sure that work was completed to my satisfaction (on time and within budget). Additionally, Equinox worked diligently in repairing a wooden deck and an iron bridge that connects the deck to the patio. After the work was done, the house recovered its luster and beauty! Equinox painted the exterior of my second property in American Canyon. This building is made up mostly of stucco. They power washed the exteriors, replaced the wooden frames of front windows, performed detailed repairs around the walls where they found cracks and other minor things. I was very impressed with the final result. I was very satisfied with their performance. The house recovered its original beauty! Equinox's personnel is detailed oriented, dependable and trustworthy. They are my first choice whenever I need a job to be done right the first time. If you have questions or need to speak with me, please feel free to call me.

We hired Jason because he truly cares about his work. He was a pleasure to work with, maintained good communication, and did an excellent job. He even went the extra mile to put artistic touches on our driveway. The finished result is really lovely, and it completely transformed the look of our home. Even when some aspects of the project hit unexpected snags, Jason was a true pro, and figured out solutions. I recommend Jason for any concrete projects! -Jessica in Sacramento

New Haven Homes did a bathroom remodel for me in early January 2015 which took 5 days for full completion. They did good quality work on the project. They were prompt, courteous, and clean. Their cost was very reasonable -- far better than Home Depot who also quoted the job.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
