"I am so pleased that I was able to find Mary through Thumbtack. I am traveling, working long hours on a computer and was in need of a massage. I did not know any therapists in the area but finding Mary was heaven sent! I was so happy with the services she provided. She customizes the session to your needs. I highly recommend her, as she is both professional and experienced. I received a 90 minute swedish and then Healing Touch Energy Therapy. I was able to select the music I wanted to listen to and the oils I preferred. I also requested a scalp treatment which for a small fee was well worth it. I purchased massage oil for carpel tunnel syndrome, which Mary mixed up special. Don't miss out on the chance for a wonderfully relaxing and deeply healing massage therapy session."

"I’ve had several massage therapists help me work out problems I’ve had with my back. None of them were able to get as deep tissue as Carmen did or work pressure points as well as she does. Best massage I’ve ever received hands down."

"The first time I received a medical massage was "by chance". I had torn my meniscus which made my arthritis pain even worse, so I was in a great deal of discomfort. I went in for massage only because it had already been scheduled but did not expect any relief for the pain or even wanted my leg worked on. I was so blessed to have been assigned with Hailey, She was professional, systematic, compassionate and effective in how she listened and worked with the rest of me, that I trusted her enough to let her examine the area and "see" if she could provide any relief...OH THANK GOD!!! She was amazing and helped the pain tremendously. It wasn't long before she was doing deep work in the area and I even got relief in my calf, which I had never allowed anyone to work on before. Hailey is very holistic in her approach. She listens carefully to my concerns and is also very observant of my posture, movement and responses in assessing my needs. She is very knowledgeable in various methods of treatments and adapts her therapy to what I need in a specific area. I now see her regularly and we have treatment goals to address my different needs. I feel my body is much more flexible and relaxed as a result of my regular visits with Hailey and I am thankful for her care and for our "chance" meeting. "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
