After our initial contact on thumbtack, I called Southerland Torres company on the phone. I was so reassured by our conversation that I made an appointment for an electrician to come to my home and fix the problem. I had chosen a date about a week away and by the time he came over I had thought of a few more things that needed fixing too. All projects were done for a lot less than I thought it would cost me. I am so very pleased with the company and would recommend them to any and all that need any electric, plumbing, appliance repair or general construction issues they need addressed. Thank you Darrion I appreciate all the work you did for my little house!

I hired Joaquin and he did an amazing job ! My skylight was leaking and he fixed it ! He was very professional and responsive anytime I called him. He came to my house first to check out the job. It was difficult to figure out what the problem was but he figured it out and repaired it! I would hire him again and recommend him to anyone that needs a contractor for concrete, tile, roofing and he does drywall too! Thanks, Joaquin for the great work !

Carlos is honest, happy young man, who is willing to satisfy his clients. He is a bit slow, but does a nice job. Carlos needs to get more experience in quoting the price for the job. He had to charge us a little more, since he found some work he had not thought about when he gave the estimate. We also had him clean some tile, which he did a good job. Needs more experience cleaning tile...left some a little still dirty. He did say he would come back and reclean them. I would hire Catrlos again for laying tile. I told him that he needed to make better estimates. Good and honesty man.

We had a ceiling fan placed in our family room, and he did a great job of installing it. It didn't take long, and the best part - it doesn't wobble!

I could not be happier with the work he did. He drywalled and painted the entire room. My neighbor saw his work and was bummed that the drywall on her recent addition was not done as well.

Bill was absolutely great! He did a fantastic job in a short amount of time! ( And I mean a really short amount of time). My place was wrecked from renters with holes in the walls and just totally ruined. Bill came in and fixed it all to make it look beautiful again. He installed laminate floors, a new bathroom, fixed holes in the walls, painted, placed smoke detectors, changed outlets, and the list goes on and on. He was my angel in this disaster. He's the best person you could ever hire! He's professional, clean, honest, and does a great job! I can't thank him enough! I have one picture of the floors that he placed just to show you how beautiful a job he does! It looks great now and I thank him immensely!!!!

As I was unaware of the complexity of the cabinet needing to be removed in order to install a dishwasher, John was able to remove it and put in the dishwasher without any major obstacles. I am happy with the outcome. Have asked John to undertake more projects as well.

Eric provided an estimate for fence installation for us. He was prompt, professional and provided a very reasonable quote. Although we chose to go with another company (for fencing materials guarantee), I would highly recommend him and would certainly use him in the future for other projects.

Working with Steve was a great experience. He delivered on all his promises. The professionalism he and his workers demonstrated made me comfortable and confident in the work that was being done. The floors came out awesome. The drywall and paint work was nice and smooth. All the work was completed earlier than expected. It was a pleasure to have such a great contractor. I'm looking for some more projects for Steve to do.

Eddie was very responsive with his quote - I liked that he quotes for the whole job, rather than per hour. This makes way more sense to me, so I can budget for this. Work quality is excellent - he said he can do the jobs, which he provided efficiently, without difficultly, and was punctual and got it all done within two hours, even going to Home Depot to get some hardware needed to install our new security door, and buy replacement shingles that were blown off from our garage, which he perfectly matched. Eddie is an awesome Handyman, and I highly recommended him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
