Though I reside in New York City, my husband and I recently purchased a vacation home in Estes Park, CO. It's an older home but still has such natural beauty which I needed help showcasing. A friend of mine referred me to Donna with DecorReform. I figured it was worth giving an interior decorator a try because I literally didn't know where to begin but knew I wanted to have it all set before our next trip for Valentine's Day. I can't express enough gratitude to Donna. She simply nailed it in every way! We haven't even met in person but I made arrangements for her to have access to the house in our absence and although I haven't seen it in person, the pictures and video sent are priceless making it even more exciting to visit! Because of Donna's willingness to go above and beyond in a situation like this, I will be giving my husband the best Valentine's gift yet and I really owe her all the thanks!

I am making changes to exterior and some interior paint and needed a second opinion on the colors. Ashley understood my style and chose colors which would compliment my existing color scheme. She had great ideas, suggestions, and advice. I highly recommend her and would hire her again. Thank you Ashley!

Jen and Jessica exceeded all of my expectations. I moved into a new home and was overwhelmed with my ideas of what I wanted and how to even begin to start. Jen worked with me and we took it room by room. She understood what I wanted and incorporated my existing furniture. She understood that I needed this to be budget friendly and offered me options that looked high end. Jsquared is very connected and their sub contractors are easy to work with, affordable and professional. I think that it also important to note that they are timely. I have worked with other designers and I was the one that had to bug them to move the project along. There is nothing worse than having you home incomplete for months. With Jsquared, they kept the timeline and and stuck to it. In some cases, visions came to life in days, not weeks. I love my home. It is everything I imagined and more. I would recommend them for any scope of work. They have the experience, vision, and passion to make their clients very happy.

Lena was extremely responsive and easy to work with. She is a true professional at interior design and was able come to our home and immediately grasped what we wanted to do and had lots of ideas. She is able to work with a wide range of budgets. The process is like being on one of the home remodel shows, you come home and it is all done. POOF! Highly recommend working with Lena and D2D.

Katie Albee of Sensing Self Designs is tremendously talented, professional, intuitive, kind, and delivers far more than one would expect. Initially, I hired Katie to assess and organize my home office. This office is in the front room of my house and is very awkward. Katie took the time to learn about my business, my business goals, and the day to day of my life. From this point she developed and executed a plan to create a pleasant, professional, and efficient space. This included organizing, designing, installing desks, shelves, hooks, and all kinds of nice personal touches. Her suggestions also prompted us to take a nice family photo and we are grateful to have those memories as well. After the home office, we moved into the kitchen where Katie transformed an uninspired and lackluster tract home kitchen to a sleek and modern look. I feel so much better in my home and look forward to working with Katie on many future projects. Her intuition, design skills, and the ability to do the projects (from painting to installing things to sink installation) makes for a really convenient and full-service process. I highly recommend Katie Albee of Sensing Self Designs. Your space will thank you and it will increase your overall happiness!

I couldn't have asked for a better person for the job! After texting Diana, she responded immediately, inviting me to call her to express my needs. She truly listened to my initial thinking and concerns with my DIY planned kitchen design. She then consulted me on some choices and helped me understand why certain items/color schemes work together and others don't. I can use the knowledge I have gained from working with her on this project to DIY projects in other areas of my home. She was professional & knowledgeable about all the nuisances of design that I did not initially consider. I highly recommend Diana as she is a great listener, possess a wealth of knowledge and offered me practical solutions. Thank you Diana!

Allie provided much needed home staging, interior design and layout design. This allowed for decluttering and organizing that has remained my mainstay. I received positive feedback from my realtor and other design professionals. She was accommodating and professional throughout this experience, considering my opinions and preferences. She always wore a smile and worked very hard.

My mother and I were looking to furnish my first home. We visited many stores all over Denver and met different designers but just were not satisfied with the options we were presented. Then we met Kristy! Her passion, energy, and ability to understand what design style and furniture I was looking for were the reason we worked with her. Not only did her design skills win us over, we really felt that Kristy was very invested in the process and getting to know us. If you are looking for a talented and trustworthy designer - it’s Kristy Smith!

This was our first experience in working with a designer, and I don't know if this is always the case, but we couldn't have asked for a better experience! Meg is creative and enthusiastic with a keen eye for color and design, and she took time to figure out our style and preferences. We remodeled the main floor of our house, and once she had a sense about our taste, Meg provided us lots of choices for anything from furniture to rugs to flooring to color scheme throughout our home. All of our friends are amazed with our "new" house! Meg simplified what would have been an otherwise overwhelming project. She was extremely responsive and easy to work with. We wholeheartedly recommend Meg to others and would definitely use her again when we decide to remodel other parts of our home!

Design and space planning in my living area and bedrooms. She was very professional and listened to my ideas, what I wanted. I did not have alot of money to spend, so she did not waste my time suggesting things out of my price range. Her ideas were fresh and she made several suggestions on space planning that I am so glad I went with. I initially had my living area, but was so happy with the results, I went with Morgan to do my bedroom also. She was prompt and delivered products when she said she would. I would recommend her to my friends(and have).

I had an idea of what I wanted in my house. But I had no way of visualizing it to wonder if my crazy dreams were legitimately possible... Meryl to the rescue! Her rendition of the space I wanted to install a fireplace in, was amazing. She met with me multiple times throughout the process and provided many suggestions that I ended up following through with, including the most important... The fireplace. Couldn't have done it without her and there's no reason to look elsewhere for my next renovation. She made everything easy for me.

    About

My clients tell me their favorite thing about working with me is my "no pressure" attitude. Need a few days to think something over? Aren't ready to dive into repainting tomorrow? I get it! Your home is your space and design decisions are decisions you will see each and every day so what is most important to me is that you're happy - or better yet, you LOVE your space! In addition, clients also appreciate that I am able to articulate the "whys" of the suggestions I make. You tell me your goals (if you need help, I can work with you to help identify them) and I make them happen. Even better, my clients also appreciate my ability to accomplish these goals on a broad spectrum of budgets! I can't make a $700 table $5 but I bet I can find one that fits the bill for a lot less.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
