Kim couldn't have been a better choice for our wedding caterer. She was so personable, helpful, calming, and efficient, not to mention a fabulous cook! She handled everything from start to finish with the expertise of a five star chef. Everyone raved about our meal, which featured Beef Wellington. She completely took over the kitchen, but was so unobtrusive that you barely knew she was there. I would recommend her over and over for any event.

I am Jan Dunbar (Janice Romney Dunbar: Mrs. C.W. Dunbar) I've known Tom Letts in various capacities, particularly that of a friend as he has had an interesting career, crossing paths with our lives and with our interests. Tom is a Chef-At-Heart. Tom never heard the term, "Fast Food." without coming up with an alternative that was twice as nutritious, twice as interesting, and twice as much fun. Not many amateur chefs I know would pack up his favorite pot, favorite knives, and detour into organic food stores where his lively imagination could innovate a recipe to fit something fresh and exciting, promising to make it through his kitchen to come out surprising and delicious. At the same time, Tom is a patient innovator who can take something like a mushroom of unknown flavor, doing small maneuvers between sink and stove, coming up with something simmered and slow-savored to just the "different" kind of sauce. Tom is a fearless shopper, buying things that are unusual, sometimes exotic, sometimes experimental and handsome on the plate. and nothing is too much trouble. I've lived next door to Tom from time to time. The sounds and scents of Tom-in-the-kitchen are an experience of joy and excitement. You should try it!

What a night! A very special 70th birthday surprise for my husband, who had hoped to stay close to home, have a low key evening with little fanfare. What could be more perfect than celebrating in the comfort of your own home with Chef Dustin Brandt at the helm! Joined by our best friends, Dustin prepared a 5 course meal of all my husband's favorites including a chicken liver mousse w/ shallots and capers appetizer, scrumptious escargot in herb garlic butter sauce, crab stuffed mushrooms, mushroom soup with creme fraiche, spinach arugula salad with raspberries and roasted pistachios, Beef Wellington with toast potatoes and asparagus, and roasted apple creeps for dessert! The four of us friends are trying to come up with occasions to hire him again. Bravo! Superb! Extraordinaire! Find a celebration to hire Dustin as your personal chef...it was truly one if the best gifts I have ever given my husband and so well received. Thank you Dustin!

I'm so happy I found Lisa and her crew! I hired her for my daughter's Sweet 16/ Quinceanera and she was sweet, personable, accommodating and helpful. When you see Mama Lisa's Little Italy you automatically think only Italian food, but they totally customized an awesome fajita station, 3 types of meats, chips, tortillas, rice, beans, assortment of salsa and toppings! All pretasted at the convenience of my home. So delicious! Very important when it comes to a family with an appetite for good Mexican cuisine. All my guests were very impressed and complimented me on the food all night. Not to mention Lisa set up a bar with staff for the night that were an absolute delight! Very friendly, organized, and really worked hard to serve and entertain my guests. They even cleaned and packed up all our left overs, it was nice not having to make dinner the next day! It can be overwhelming choosing a caterer who doesn't over price their food and or sacrifice quality, or customer service. Thank you for making our daughter's special day so memorable! Best wishes and hope to use you again for future events!

I hired Carrie with Knife and Pepper to cater a surprise dinner for my mom's 70th birthday and it was fabulous! We had about 12 guests and Carrie prepared an amazing home cooked Italian dinner. Everyone loved the food and the appetizers were my absolute favorite - delicious! Presentation was wonderful, price was appropriate. We did the meal as a drop off and buffet style at my house and it really was wonderful. I would absolutely hire them again and highly recommend them!

I hit the jackpot when I found Lenny with Xim catering. He went way above and beyond to accommodate our somewhat complex needs for my Mother's 80th birthday. He was so incredibly gracious, kind, and professional. Xim had some challenges with the venue we had chosen but they really make it work so well despite the none kitchen, tiny space and complex menu. All our guests raved about the food and the extremely friendly service. I give Lenny and Xim 10 stars for service and execution. Thank you very much

Dear Chef Diane, Hello! This is Grant Hagenberger; my father Gene and I took your class this past winter. All is well and I'm actually off to East Stroudsburg University tomorrow for the upcoming school year! I really got a lot out of the class and I have made sauteed chicken with the pan sauce I made for our final several times for the family. I have also made a hot salmon marinade and the knife skills learned in class have been very helpful. Last night, my family ate at Volt in Frederick (the restaurant owned and operated by Brian from the last season of Top Chef), and taking your class made me appreciate the skills involved so much more. Both dad and I are convinced that you should try out for the next season of Top Chef! I hope all is well and I'm hoping to take another class next summer! Dad also sends his best! Take Care, Grant H.

Honestly, Connor was much better then expected or anticipated! Not only was he consistent and timely in responding to my emails but was on top of any and all questions I had! Very thorough and specific in terms of trying to figure out exactly what you're looking to gain from the time together. Feels very relaxed and easy going. Never a feeling of being rushed or forced and does a great job at taking the lead while still allowing you to feel like your in control. I wanted to make sure he knew what I wanted as far as, Meal Prep, Food Combination & Planning for the week ahead... What I got was all that and more; an introduction to Seasonings, Proper cooking times, Techniques, and Tools for eliminating waste and increasing efficiency ! He was very straight forward, easy to understand and relatable. Connor makes it unbelievably easy to take simple ingredients combined with a few simple spices and seasonings to bring to life a really delicious, healthy and hearty meal! I would definitely recommend anyone looking for an inexpensive High Quality chef to come share his experience and knowledge! 11/10 on rating of satisfaction!

She came in and catered for a work event we were having, and let me tell you, her food is out of this world. Even now, the Gods are preparing her a place in Valhalla, not as a guest, but as a chef. Because this food is worthy of the heroes therein to feast upon until the end of time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
