Electrical and Wiring Repair

Mitch M. says, "Bill responded within minutes and asked if he could come late Wednesday. I agreed and gave him my phone number. Shortly after that Thumbtack asked if I had hired Bill. Since we were still sorting out project details (and getting parts) I never responded. We later discovered that Thumbtack had canceled the project without informing either Bill or myself. That's a ding against Thumbtack. Fortunately Bill and I were able to contact each other. He was able to come by this evening and fixed my dishwasher even though it was far more damaged than I had thought. At one stage I thought we would have to scrap it, but Bill asked if he could try one more thing before I made that decision. He was able to figure out what had gone wrong (5 wires had been pulled out of place, and Bill was able to figure out how to reconnect them without a wiring diagram). I am very happy with Bill's determination to fix my problem and I plan on calling on him if I need help again."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

Second time using Fidum. Great job as before at a reasonable rate. Came in to correct a problem that a previous electrician made. Did an outstanding job on the lights and outlets. Highly recommended.

Chris is an excellent electrician, but more than that a great person. He taught me things along the way as he worked and gave me a very fair and great value price. Chris is the guy for your electrical job, went above and beyond.

Larry did an amazing job installing my electric car charger. His initial communication was excellent, he provided a very fair price quote for the work, he worked quickly, cleaned up the workspace when he was done, and the quality of his work is fantastic. I highly recommend Larry to anyone looking for a reliable, high quality, professional electrician.

Electrician cancelled 5 minutes after he was scheduled to show up. No reason give. Just a text saying “Please reschedule”. Called the owner and he was unaware of the situation, and said he would call me back. Never heard back (3+ hours later). Had blocked off our Saturday morning to have this project done. Very unprofessional and unreliable.

Robert was great! He is a good electrician and did everything we asked promptly and very well. He anticipated problems that we did not see and resolved the problems. He also was willing and able to do work that was not electrical, including mounting grab bars in our showers and also changing hardware in our kitchen. In addition to doing great work, he was pleasant and considerate. We will ask him back for additional assistance!

I was very skeptical about hiring someone on Thumbtack especially an electrician. I had hired other handyman people before and they were okay from thumbtack. However, Dylan was fabulous very nice very professional and extremely honest he did a great job and half the cost of the other companies quote. He found a way to do a very difficult move of a light fixture. I highly recommend him.

- Agreed to come in the morning, rescheduled to 1-2pm, then arrived at 3:30pm, 1.5h late still. - Left non-removable stains on ceiling and lamps from dirty hands (see images) - One of the electricians was cursing and yelling loudly, presumably out of frustration because he had problems with one of the lamps. Because they were late, I had told them I needed to be on a phone call while they were working, which made the swearing and yelling more disrepectful.

Chris was amazing – I asked many questions and he did an exceptional job narrating how my outlets worked, various scenarios of the good, bad and ugly. I felt my house was well taken care of and got some good education! I was so pleased with Chris' punctuality, patience and thoroughness. He's the first electrician I have ever had to hire and likely to be the only! We have CFGI outlets and I knew very little about them. One of my CFGI outlets blew and Chris fixed it super quickly - he ran out to Home Depot, got what I needed and installed the new outlet. I highly recommend!

Neal did a variety of electrical work for us including installing a subpanel and running new circuits. This was quite a large task due to the routing of the wires through difficult places. He did an outstanding job and when it took longer than initially expected due to unanticipated challenges, he showed up the next day and finished everything for the original estimate. He also was very helpful in helping us to understand what we needed and what we did not need. Other electricians tried to sell additional work that was unnecessary and pointlessly expensive. Neal helped us understand exactly what we needed to get done and did it at a very reasonable price and at a very high-quality. We are very happy with Neals work, and recommend him highly
