Though I reside in New York City, my husband and I recently purchased a vacation home in Estes Park, CO. It's an older home but still has such natural beauty which I needed help showcasing. A friend of mine referred me to Donna with DecorReform. I figured it was worth giving an interior decorator a try because I literally didn't know where to begin but knew I wanted to have it all set before our next trip for Valentine's Day. I can't express enough gratitude to Donna. She simply nailed it in every way! We haven't even met in person but I made arrangements for her to have access to the house in our absence and although I haven't seen it in person, the pictures and video sent are priceless making it even more exciting to visit! Because of Donna's willingness to go above and beyond in a situation like this, I will be giving my husband the best Valentine's gift yet and I really owe her all the thanks!

I am making changes to exterior and some interior paint and needed a second opinion on the colors. Ashley understood my style and chose colors which would compliment my existing color scheme. She had great ideas, suggestions, and advice. I highly recommend her and would hire her again. Thank you Ashley!

Jen and Jessica exceeded all of my expectations. I moved into a new home and was overwhelmed with my ideas of what I wanted and how to even begin to start. Jen worked with me and we took it room by room. She understood what I wanted and incorporated my existing furniture. She understood that I needed this to be budget friendly and offered me options that looked high end. Jsquared is very connected and their sub contractors are easy to work with, affordable and professional. I think that it also important to note that they are timely. I have worked with other designers and I was the one that had to bug them to move the project along. There is nothing worse than having you home incomplete for months. With Jsquared, they kept the timeline and and stuck to it. In some cases, visions came to life in days, not weeks. I love my home. It is everything I imagined and more. I would recommend them for any scope of work. They have the experience, vision, and passion to make their clients very happy.

Patra is a timeless Interior Designer. Not only does she have vision, but she can pull a room together from pieces already there or from other rooms and integrate them with new ideas/pieces. She is great with keeping the integrity of one's individual style while making the project timeless and fresh. We highly recommend Patra for all interior design needs. Most importantly, she should be brought on in the pre construction and architecture deign process. Her insight is valuable. Part is trustworthy, price conscious, and has excellent resources. I can't say enough positive things about Diana. She has deep design knowledge, a great eye, and provides excellent service at incredibly reasonable prices. Diana has handled both large and small projects for me. She designed two living rooms (furniture layout and selection, paint color, accessories), designed the re-model of our master bathroom, and gave design advice for our vacation condo with an emphasis on inexpensive and DIY improvements. Diana has also helped with smaller projects. Most recently we spent 30 minutes talking about how to set up a spare bedroom to serve as a teen study with minimal expense, including color ideas and a great budget-friendly desk solution from Ikea. As I told her at the time, it was the most cost-effective half-hour of service that I have ever gotten! Diana has also picked the paint colors for the outside of my house and has gone shopping with me to find smaller accessories/pieces of furniture to fill in some empty spots in the house. As for cost, I particularly appreciate that Diana doesn't get any "hidden" fees (which another designer burned me on in the past). She charges a flat (and shockingly reasonable) hourly rate, and that's it. She's willing to do a short consult, or a longer detailed and drawn-out plan, according to your budget and needs. Diana also knows the best places to shop to get good deals, and she finds great stuff online which she adds to a Pinterest site she set up for me for easy access. Bottom line, Diana has made my house much more beautiful, and I didn't have to pay outrageous designer fees to get it. I recommend her highly.

Allie provided much needed home staging, interior design and layout design. This allowed for decluttering and organizing that has remained my mainstay. I received positive feedback from my realtor and other design professionals. She was accommodating and professional throughout this experience, considering my opinions and preferences. She always wore a smile and worked very hard.

Kristy helped me with the overall decor and design in my basement renovation. Kristy had a way of making me feel comfortable with her the minute we met and really listened to what I was looking for in my final product. Kristy paid attention to my needs and worked to help me complete my vision within a reasonable budget and timeframe. I continue to seek Kristy's guidance and expertise in other areas during the transition of my home and highly recommend her to help anyone seeking to create their dream home.

After recently moving into a new home, I hired Kathy for living room design and for a paint color consult. Kathy is amazing. She is very warm and personable, and she took the time to get to know me and understand my style. I was new to the area, and Kathy drove me to several design centers to shop for furnishings. She had creative ideas to make my living area functional and comfortable. I am so happy I used Kathy’s services and I highly recommend her.

This was our first experience in working with a designer, and I don't know if this is always the case, but we couldn't have asked for a better experience! Meg is creative and enthusiastic with a keen eye for color and design, and she took time to figure out our style and preferences. We remodeled the main floor of our house, and once she had a sense about our taste, Meg provided us lots of choices for anything from furniture to rugs to flooring to color scheme throughout our home. All of our friends are amazed with our "new" house! Meg simplified what would have been an otherwise overwhelming project. She was extremely responsive and easy to work with. We wholeheartedly recommend Meg to others and would definitely use her again when we decide to remodel other parts of our home!

About

I’m Patrick and I have fun making interior spaces functional, safe, and beautiful by determining space requirements and selecting decorative items, such as colors, lighting, and materials. I’m able to meet you needs in your budget range and read your blueprints and also be aware of building codes and inspection regulations, as well as universal accessibility standards. I take all of these to a new level of professionalism through my friends and other professionals, of course with the best backgrounds on the market!

About

My clients tell me their favorite thing about working with me is my "no pressure" attitude. Need a few days to think something over? Aren't ready to dive into repainting tomorrow? I get it! Your home is your space and design decisions are decisions you will see each and every day so what is most important to me is that you're happy - or better yet, you LOVE your space! In addition, clients also appreciate that I am able to articulate the "whys" of the suggestions I make. You tell me your goals (if you need help, I can work with you to help identify them) and I make them happen. Even better, my clients also appreciate my ability to accomplish these goals on a broad spectrum of budgets! I can't make a $700 table $5 but I bet I can find one that fits the bill for a lot less.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
