My son was hesitant to start his guitar lessons, and if he didn’t like it, it would be a major ordeal to get him in the car to go. I work like everyone and have zero time left. The fact that Tess comes to the house to teach - while I prepare dinner - is freaking awesome. What a time saver. And shes made it a great experience by offering tons of encouragement and lots of laughter wrapped up in a neat 30 min session. Highly recommend.

Teresa was my daughter's piano teacher here in Chicago from kindergarten to 8th grade. From time to time, aside from piano lessons she helped my daughter with her clarinet for her school band. Teresa was an excellent teacher & a wonderful person. She inspired my kids with her works. I highly recommend her for everyone that needs a music lesson.

Mark is one of the best musicians and teachers I have had the pleasure of working with. Not only does he have vast experience with teaching and playing multiple different instruments, he knows how to effectively teach anyone at any age or level and can quickly adapt to any student's needs. He will go out of his way to give you the best lessons possible with an upbeat and positive attitude. He is always on time, professional, flexible and punctual. He cares greatly about his students and seeing them excel. Not only a great player, Mark is a very experienced and skilled teacher that I highly recommend!

I loved having Dani as a cello teacher for my daughter. Dani is very flexible and came to my house which was amazing. She was always understanding when we had to cancel or move lessons around. She is so good with kids and makes learning a hard instrument fun! I wish she hadn't moved or we would still be using her!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Rhiley has had an awesome year this year. She has grown so much from the day she walked into your studio to now. I never would have imagined she would be playing at the level she is compared to where she began. I owe this not only to Rhiley’s hard work but also to you for challenging her to be the best she can be. You bring things out of music that I never knew were even there. I am so thankful for the referral we got to come to Tamminga Studios.

    About

I've been playing the cello since I was four and since then, it has been my biggest passion in life to the extent that I have spent over 10 years in college working towards my Doctorate of Musical Arts. I have been teaching students from ages 6-75 for the past six years, and I want to continue sharing my love of the instrument with as many people as possible. Each lesson is customized to meet the goals and aspirations of each student in a nurturing environment, with a strong emphasis on correct posture and technique so injury can be prevented. If you have always wished to learn the instrument, now is a good time to start!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How hard is it to learn to play the cello?

Taking cello lessons can be a rewarding experience for students young and old. The rich sound of the cello is well-loved in classical music and is found in all genres of contemporary music from modern folk to rock. As with any instrument, how hard it is to learn to play cello depends on the practice and dedication you put into it. It’s true that some people are naturally more adept at learning instruments than others, but with lessons and a daily commitment, you too can learn to play the cello.

Cello lessons can be a smart investment, especially for new players. Even professional cellists benefit greatly from ongoing training, but for those new to cello it’s especially important for forming a strong foundation for playing. From the proper posture to understanding finger positions, regular cello lessons give you a benchmark to measure your daily practice against. With a professional cello teacher guiding you, the sky’s the limit.

    How much are cello lessons?

Cello lessons are a great way to anchor and guide your cello practice, regardless of your skill level. From top symphony performers to first-time music students in elementary school, cello lessons correct your flaws and help your strengths shine. The cost of cello lessons will vary, depending on the reputation and experience of your teacher, the length and frequency of your lessons, and where you live. Students who have regularly scheduled lessons and pay in advance often pay less per lesson than drop-in students who schedule lessons as needed. Here are some examples of average cello lesson costs:

    • 30-minute cello lesson: $30, when a minimum of 4 lessons per month are pre-paid.
      • Cost for drop-in lesson: $35.
    • 45-minute cello lesson: $35, when a minimum of 4 lessons per month are pre-paid.
      • Cost for drop-in lesson: $40-$45.
    • 60-minute cello lesson: $40, when a minimum of 4 lessons per month are pre-paid.
