Jacob was phenomenal! He and his coworker replaced my kitchen faucet and bathroom sink quickly and with a lot of care to the finished product. They even noticed my guest bathroom toilet was running so that fixed that , with no extra charge to me. THAT is awesome customer service! Highly recommend!

We could not have been more pleased with Forest and the entire crew from Beyond Boundaries. When I initially started thinking about our bathroom remodel in the fall, the hardest part was finding a contractor who seemed interested in taking on such a small project (Denver contractors are busy these days!). Thankfully, thumbtack helped connect me with Beyond Boundaries. From the beginning, Forest made us feel like our project was important. He and his crew paid great attention to detail, were highly communicative, and took pride in their work. From Noe (who did the tile work), to the painter, electrician, glass door installer and plumbers, everyone was friendly, hard working, and went above and beyond. We couldn't be happier with the result. We will definitely be using Beyond Boundaries on all future home projects! Thanks to Forest and the team!

Mark worked for me for 4 days, painted unfinished garage, bedroom accent wall, installed 3 ceiling fans with remotes, keypad lock, garage door insulation installation. He does a great job and is prompt. When I called him back for questions about something, his attitude was good. I would use him again.

I hired Josiah to fix multiple things for me: a glass shower door, a light fixture and a sink faucet that was not working correctly. He did an excellent job fixing all three efficiently and within the estimate and then showing me what had been done and making recommendations if there are future problems. I highly recommend Papa's.

JM Remodeling did a fantastic job helping to re-tile my bathroom shower. We personally did the demolition of the old shower area and purchased the tile we desired to have put up. We then had JM Remodeling come in and increase the footprint of the shower floor, hang new cement board and the tile. It is absolutely stunning and we could not be happier. Thank you!

We hired Gil to do a variety of handyman services (flooring repair, shower door and appliance installation, updating fixtures, blinds installation, etc.) and he did a great job with everything that we were looking for. He also was very accommodating and flexible with his time which made it easier on us to schedule during our time off. We will definitely reach out to Gil in the future if/when we have additional projects to complete.

Scott was great to work with. He did a number of projects for us - installed an interior cat door, put up baby gates, fixed some fencing, installed a smoke detector. On each project, he was thoughtful on how he handled them (re-hanging one of the baby gates so there was space for cats and not for baby). Will definitely hire again.

Matt helped us with a variety of jobs related to our kitchen renovation. We had a very outdated (1940-1950's era) kitchen, and were working to renovate through IKEA. A group associated with IKEA installed new cabinets and countertops, and Matt did literally EVERYTHING else. He performed a difficult demo and prepped our walls for install, and afterwards worked to finish all other aspects of our project- including new tile flooring, cutting for and installing a new sink, and properly installing a microwave/hood combo. These tasks are only a small portion of the total body of work Matt completed however. All told, this was a BIG project for a relatively small kitchen; nonetheless we could not have been more pleased with Matt's craftsmanship, attention to detail, and thoroughness. Matt did not leave anything undone and is clearly passionate about providing the best work possible. Communicating and working with Matt was very easy & straightforward, and there were never any questions about the job being done or the quality of work. Even when we asked Matt do perform additional duties midway through out project, he was flexible in incorporating these additions in. We could not be more happy with our new kitchen and would highly recommend Matt & Big Red Innovations to others (and we will likely be working with him again in the future!).

I hit the jackpot finding Maurice! I bought a townhouse that needed some renovating. My original plan was to remove popcorn ceiling, remove wall paper, paint, remove tile floor and lay carpet, upgrade tiled fireplace and tiled window seat. I knew I would need to coordinate the different jobs, while sticking to a tight timeline of one month. I happened upon Superior Floors while looking for someone to remove tile. During our first phone call, I explained my plan and found out he could do all of my projects. I was ecstatic!! From the moment I met him, I could tell he was passionate and very knowledgeable about his job. He noticed the mismatched texture on the walls (two other painters didn't notice), gave suggestions, and was very creative in designing the fireplace. I added a few things to the project (install/wire ceiling fans, new flooring in the bathroom, upgrade interior doors) when we met and was assured they would be done in time. After they started working and I saw progress, I became excited and asked about doing a few other things that I had planned for the future during this renovation (new bathroom cabinets for both bathrooms, new countertops, new lighting fixtures, and granite countertops for the bathroom and kitchen). Though I knew I was adding more work and possibly delaying my timeline, he accepted the challenge. Maurice kept in constant contact throughout the entire project. He kept me within budget and he maintained my one month timeline, even with the added projects!! I was very lucky everything was delivered on time or early. The finished project is amazing and I love my "new" place! I have already had him back to make my laundry space more functional. He did a great job with this too! I will be hiring him again to retile the master shower and guest bath. He is personable, professional, and thorough. He does a fantastic job and does it right the first time, he does not cut corners. I really liked his excitement and design ideas throughout the project. I highly recommend Maurice with Superior Floors! It was my first experience with a contractor, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Gene Denton from Its Gotta Go was one of 4 contractors we looked at to replace our shower. Out of all 4 he was the only one that got back to me the same day and had a bid to us within 2 days of seeing the project. He worked with me to meet my budget and started the project on the day promised. Bob came to work early each morning and worked all day. He pointed out some wood rot from moisture leaking in our old shower, he replaced the wood and repaired the walls even with the unexpected repairs the job was completed in 5 days. Each afternoon before leaving he cleaned the area and when he finally left the shower was in, doors on, wall painted, trash hauled away and everything was vacuumed and cleaned. Both Gene and Bob were very personable. I would highly recommend Its Gotta Go.

Uncle Brian and his crew were very responsive and professional. They offered a lot of suggestions on how to reduce costs and improve the long term reliability of the bathrooms. They had great ideas on locations to purchase materials, and did a great job installing. During construction, they found several issues caused by the previous homeowners and the original construction which were all repaired. They were flexible in terms of timing and did their best to have a low impact on our house, cleaning up every night and working with our schedule. We had a few issues, which they came back after the project to resolve at no extra charge. They were always easy to get a hold of and always showed up when they said. We're very happy with their work and would recommend them to anyone. While not the cheapest option, the quality and thoroughness of the work is worth the extra. We completely remodeled two full bathrooms. This included flooring, cabinets, lighting, tub and shower, toilet, and fixtures.

Nick and Eric remodeled our master bathroom -- everything from rebuilding the shower stall, fixing a plumbing leak, tiling in and around the shower and bathtub, all plumbing associated with three new shower heads and new bathtub hardware, adding can lights, installing a new wall sconce (and outlet), running HDMI from master bedroom to bathroom, making custom mirrors, designing and making a custom barn door (and installing), installing new flooring in master bath and master bedroom, installing new baseboards, installing new vanity and all the plumbing and hardware associated, installing new ceiling exhaust in master bathroom, custom building and installing new glass block windows (2) and finishing exterior of window casing to match rest of house, installing new valves for toilet, and installing new toilet, and many other minor adjustments throughout the project. The best part was working with Nick and Eric throughout the process to continually find the right solution and produce a spectacular new bathroom.

Colorado Glass and Mirror installed a shower door for a remodel we are doing. Justin came out to measure and with our very uneven walls we were still able to have a frameless door. It fits beautifully. Justin is one of the nicest people you will want to work with and his installer, Andrew, is outstanding. We are very pleased with the entire job and highly recommend them.

I needed a shower valve replacement done to take my existing 3 knobs down to one lever. I reached out to Steve pretty late in the day to see if he could help me out. Knowing that he had a full schedule, Steve said that he could make it out that evening to start the work. I was surprised but grateful. Steve arrived at 9:00 to start the work and within a couple of hours my shower valve was replaced. I appreciate the time Steve took to come out on short notice. He did a great job and now I can finish my tile work. I wouldn't hesitate to use Steve on other projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
