"Absolutely awesome. She's the ONLY massage therapist who's been able to work out the knots and sore spots in my back. I have worked outside all my life and have tough muscles and a high pain tolerance, so I needed someone who wasn't afraid to hurt me. I also have a fibromyalgia type disease that needs certain areas worked in certain ways and she knows her anatomy and where those muscles, tendons and sore spots are located for the best results. She's Amazing! <3"

"I had a wonderful massage from Tayler today and will definitely be back. Her studio is very inviting and peaceful. The heated massage table was divine. Sooooo relaxing. Tayler used a variety of techniques that were just what I needed. I have a lot of back, shoulder, hip and neck pain and very few massage therapists will do the deep pressure that I need but Tayler did. It was that perfect combination of intense pain relief and relaxation that I look for in a massage. Bonus: Tayler's adorable pug, Henry, will lie in his bed and make very cute relaxed pug noises during your massage. Henry has the perfect chill vibe for a massage studio dog and he was just the cherry on top of a wonderful experience. (Although Tayler tells me she can move Henry to the bedroom if his cute snoring disturbs you.) I left feeling relaxed and happy. The massage from Tayler really just made my day!"

"Amanda has done an amazing job at healing several issues I've had for quite a while. Her knowledge of the body and how to heal it is something I've never seen in any other massage therapist. She's getting my body back to where I can return to being more active and healthy."

" I met Jake about six months ago when my body was desperately in need of some work. Since then I have seen Jake quite a few times and my body has started to realign and feel better. I've had plenty of massage in my 49 years and I would rate him is one of the top two best I've ever had. Very knowledgeable about the body and gets into those areas that are hard to fine. I'm happy to report that bi-monthly massages along with yoga have help to heal me. I highly recommend him!"

"Adryanna provided an excellent deep tissue massage. She was very in tune to how much pressure I was comfortable with during the massage and was never too light. She also provided great feedback to areas I need to focus on and stretch more for preventative health going forward. I would highly recommend Adryanna to help with any deep tissue massage needs!"

"Had a great experience. Alex has a perfect level of pressure, at least for me it was, but he is very easy to work with and very open to adjusting hit technique to your body issues. I also really liked the fact that his massage seemed to have a very nice continuous flow as he worked through the massage, very relaxing but also really relaxed my muscles, really noticed it the next day as well. Thanks Alex."

"My experience with Eric Heller has been terrific. He is very knowledgeable in the science of massage therapy. His ability to communicate and put me at ease has been one I have not since found. I began seeing Eric when I was having severe mid back pain. Eric was great and he explained which muscles were affected and how that related to my pain. He put me at complete ease as worked on my back. His sense of humor is terrific and he somehow has the ability to know when to talk during therapy and when to just let me relax. He gives good instructions for after care and suggestions for continued self-help. Not only did Eric resolve my issues, he followed up to see how I was doing. I have seen other massage therapists prior to Eric and none took the time to truly hear what my issues were prior to the session nor the strength and knowledge to resolve my problem. More or less they did a massage and that’s it. No additional instructions, no advice for continued care or letting me know if/when I need to come back. And of course, no follow-up after. I strongly recommend Eric for his ability to resolve the issue at hand, and the fact that he really cares about his clients."

"I have been receiving massage from Elisa for almost 20 years. I keep going back to her because I feel so much better afterwards, every single time. She has an intuition/experience that allows her to work on the areas that need attention, so each massage is a bit different and always wonderful. Her manner is so lovely and caring that I am always able to relax completely in her capable hands. I honestly don't know what I'd do without her."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage is a therapeutic massage tailored specifically to the needs of a pregnant woman’s body. Before having a prenatal massage, always check in with your prenatal care provider and ask if massage therapy will be safe for you and your pregnancy. A pregnancy massage is much more than just an indulgence. The specialized strokes and techniques used to loosen tight muscles, reduce swelling, alleviate pressure, and ease tension provide positive health benefits for both you and your baby. Experts recommend finding a massage therapist who has received additional training on prenatal massage techniques. This is typically a certification above and beyond their standard massage therapy certification and training requirements. During the massage you will likely lie on your side or in a semi-reclined position; these supported poses keep you and the baby comfortable and free from strain or undue pressure. During the massage, the therapist will listen to what body challenges you are experiencing and work to release tension. The massage should be a relaxing and very soothing experience.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

Is Swedish massage safe during pregnancy?

As long as your prenatal care physician has cleared you for prenatal massage, it should be safe to indulge yourself in a Swedish massage during pregnancy. In fact, scheduling regular pregnancy massages can have wonderful health benefits for you and the baby. Swedish and other massages can feel great and also have a variety of health benefits, according to studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Some of the benefits of pregnancy massage include reduction in leg and back pain, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and a better overall mood.

To find the right massage therapist for you, read the therapist’s online reviews and call to ask them about their experience with prenatal massage. Massage therapists who have been specially trained in prenatal massage techniques often advertise this area of expertise on their websites. Don’t hesitate to ask questions beforehand, and to communicate during the massage about what does and does not feel good.

Can you have massages while pregnant?

Not only can you have a massage while pregnant, multiple scientific studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services demonstrate that pregnancy massages provide physical and mental benefits to pregnant women and women in labor. Always ask your OB-GYN about receiving massages before starting any massage therapy to make sure it is safe for your own pregnancy. Pregnancy massage can alleviate pain, improve mental health and feel great. According to the DHHS, the benefits can include:

  • Decreased depression.
  • Decreased anxiety.
  • Decreased leg and back pain.
  • Lower cortisol levels, which in turn lowers prematurity rates.
  • Lessened labor pain (for women who received massage during labor).
  • Labor time that is three hours shorter, on average, for women who receive massage during labor.
