He was on time, did a great job and was done in a matter of a few hours. Have hired him to take care of my yard next spring and summer.

Everything went exactly as expected. Great attitude. The price was fair. My back yard is larger than most and I’m aware of that. The front yard is small, so it even outs, but I added $20 to the price to compensate. Naamon did my neighbor’s yard too. No complaints.

Stephanie and her husband did an amazing job cleaning up my extremely overgrown and leaf-covered gardens/yard. They also removed two small-medium sized trees for us. The yard clean up was a bit expensive but overall, totally worth it!

I had a time set up for them to come, they were going to be a little late and I received a text informing me of that. After they showed up, they got right to work, cut down my trees, and then cleaned up the yard. I would definitely hire them again!!!!

I recently had Ironman Lawn Care service my yard. Not only was he able to provide the exact service that I was quoted; he went above and beyond with recommendations on how to improve my lawn and trimmed/cleaned up some areas that we did not even discuss at no charge. He is very approachable and mentioned some odd jobs that he could help with too. I will definitely be using this service for my lawn needs this year!

Josh is great! When he comes out to mow my lawn, he’s very thorough and precise. The yard looks amazing. He really cares about his work and you can tell when he’s out there mowing and trimming the yard. He’s also very quick in responding to questions or concerns when they arise. Two thumbs up :)

I hired reliable concrete to completely re-do the backyard of my condo. The backyard was so bad previously it could have been featured on it's own episode of Hoarders. The wooden patio was old and dangerous and needed to go! Tony was professional, showed up for our consult on time (unlike 2 of the 3 other companies I received quotes from) his pricing was reasonable and he gave me all of the options from the get-go to make sure I was well aware of what it would cost and was fully in control of the end product! Even though they had seen my Pinterest inspiration they confirmed with me every step of the way that I was happy with the shape of the patio, the color, the seal, all of it! They even went above and beyond by fixing a small hole in my fence that my dog could escape through. I have attached before + after photos! It doesn't even look like the same yard! I would highly highly recommend Tony and Reliable Concrete for any landscaping project that you have.

Matt and his team did a top notch job in preparing our yard for new sod. The ground was tilled five or six times, amendment was added and the sod was masterfully laid. They also did a great job laying new river rock in our backyard. I would easily recommend Strohl Scapes to anyone looking for a quality landscaping company.

Joel and Alex started from scratch in our back yard, scraping off everything that was there in and creating a paradise for us, including block paver patio with pergola, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, swing and raised bed garden. Every visitor we have walks in and their jaws drop. We could not be happier with what they did.

Ramiro did an excellent job on my yard. He even cleaned up some litter and manually pulled weeds because I did not want to use spray on my property. He was on time and fast and the yard looks great. I plan to continue to work with him throughout the summer.

I've had Awesome Landscaping do yard work at both my rental properties. They did a full yard leaf clean-up during our move-out process, which was quite a bit of work. They left it looking great for the new tenants. At our new place, we needed multiple trees to be trimmed back and they worked quickly and with precision. We will be using them again once the branches begin to grow back.

If you are in the market for landscaping services from a knowledgeable, creative, professional and empathetic company, then this is the company for you! One of the most inexpensive services I have used with one of the best outcomes. Our yard was a neglected mess, and Josh offered creative and budget-friendly solutions to transform it into a beautiful and inviting space. (See attached image) He helped us with many affordable options and gave us techniques to help us make our yard health year round. Josh was very courteous, kind, and professional at all times. He went above and beyond to make sure that we understood the work being done and the cost involved. He took his time to ensure we got exactly what we wanted—His work ethic, integrity, and quality of work were outstanding. I am incredibly impressed with Garden Gnome Landscaping and would highly recommend them to anyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
