After a bad experience where my air conditioning unit exploded after a technician came out for a simple repair (to replace the contactor), Alex came out to look at my A/C unit free of charge. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. I have spoken with several technicians and a few came to my house in the last week or so. I felt Alex was by far the most knowledgeable and I also felt he was honest, had integrity, was someone I could trust. Thanks again Alex!

I had 2 issues that were beyond me, including a leak and an issue with cold water on the shower. The first was fixed very easily and at a reasonable price, and the other (due to being late in the day and the question of 'should we open up the wall') we stopped short of fixing but found out what it was and wasn't. There was very good diagnostics Dan and his assistant were both very courteous, and thorough. They explained what had to happen to make it work. They had good ideas, and were open to me not accepting a part that we'd attempted to use but later ruled out as the real issue. The price was reasonable for what was done. While I wish the problem I had could have been fixed 100% - the next steps were something I wasn't yet comfortable with. I will go back to Dan again if we decide to open up some walls to complete the fix on the shower issue.

I was so impressed from the estimate meeting through the entire install. Eric is kind, knowledgeable and professional. Additionally, I was pleased with the job performance of his team. They worked well and quickly to complete the job. Eric bid the work on a Saturday and completed the installation of a furnace and air conditioner in the same week. What a blessing and just in time for the 90 degree weather tomorrow. Thank you Eric to you and your team. Julie

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

He replaced the furnace and air conditioner. The job was more difficult than expected and took twice as long. He did not charge extra and was very carefully and neat getting the job completed.

Extremely thorough and a job well done. Don was very friendly and upfront about everything that needed to be done. The price included a basic inspection, cleaning and change of the filter. I would definitely hire him again for service of my HVAC or my air conditioner.

Great price, reliable, and able to do the work soon! We did not have to wait weeks to get on his schedule and the work was awesome. He installed an air conditioner and replaced an upgraded water heater as well as an expansion tank. I used to use another furnace company but no more, Furnace guy will be doing all my servicing and everything!

Two of them showed up and showed up ON TIME every time. Another reviewer noted his punctuality and then gave him one star because SHE showed up a half hour late and he had not waited. Seriously? Some people! In the corporate world it's standard to give 15 minutes, and her one star review should be revised or removed. They were receptive to my ideas, listened to what I had to say, provided their own ideas and worked with me to come up with an ideal solution for my Mini Split air conditioner. Then they implemented it far more quickly than I expected with attention to detail. If I had done the work myself, without their brainstorming along with me, I would've ended up with a sub-par installation. Not that I couldn't do it, but their experience helped to lend some good ideas that I had not thought of.

We have had a recurring problem with our air conditioner and Greg was the first person to listen to what was happening and then work to isolate and fix the issue. Once he thought he found the leak he tested the system before he recharged the unit noting that he didn’t want to waste our money or the refrigerant if the system wasn’t fixed. I really appreciated that he took on the challenge and didn’t just try to sell us a new system. The unit is only 3 years old and without fixing the leak this always seemed like a foolish option. I am so glad I found someone willing and able to fix our problem.

I am happy with the service and installation provided by HVAC Plus. One job turned into two and then into a few more. I will have Rich Philbrick's crew back out in the spring for additional work as well. Rich installed our main home furnace, a hot water heater, a Generac generator, a garage gas heater, and a secondary furnace in the upstairs. Needless to say, I've seen a lot of Rich this year. We felt his prices were fair, the installations were done properly and once on the schedule, the jobs were completed in a timely manner. We are happy with the Amana products recommended which have the stainless steel tubular heat exchanger. It's nice to know we won't have to worry about replacement for a long, long time. There were also service companies Rich subcontracted with; Jay's Electric for wiring the generator, heating, and air, and a crane company that moved the generator to the backyard. Both were very good companies to work with. This makes it easier getting through a project when you know those recommended are qualified and produce quality work. I appreciate that a lot. Thanks Rich and to your HVAC Plus crew.

Michael, the owner of Goodfellas, came out and did a VERY thorough estimate for my A/C project. He actually measured my windows and doors and suggested placing a return air duct in my basement which no other estimator did. He took the time to make sure I understood everything and took the information to his office and spec'd the proper equipment for my home. Goodfellas provided me a very fair price for the equipment and labor. He showed up with an installer, Jay and also had an assistant. Very neat and clean installation and very professional at every step. I received great financing terms. They went over and above and I will gladly recommend Goodfellas to everyone looking to do a heating and cooling project. Thank you Michael!

Apex clean air came out to my house a few weeks back and did an amazing job! Me and my husband both suffer with really bad allergies and after nothing working my doctor suggested I get the air ducts cleaned. Apex came out, vacuumed, brushed and sanitized my vents, and almost immediately i noticed a difference! I'm not waking up feeling like I can't breath anymore, and I'm not coughing. I would recommend apex to anyone! I can't thank them enough for everything they have done for me and my family!

Garret was able to fix my furnace before a very cold night. It didn't take him long to diagnose the problem then he got the correct parts and I had heat again! I will use this company again in the future if any other problems occur.

After an uncertain, even "rocky," start on a project the technician wasn't familiar with, Marvin was able to fix my leaking wall hydrant. He was fair, good-humored, and professional throughout. Thank you for arriving early and sticking with the project through completion. I would recommend Marvin, and Bullseye.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
