Eileen Broderick is an amazing photographer for a number of reasons, the primary ones being her calm and relaxed nature, her ability to connect with her subjects, her uncanny eye, and her impressive professionalism. Taking each of those reasons in turn...
When you first meet Eileen, she immediately puts you at ease. Her shooting personality is go with the flow, natural and filled with good doses of humor and humanity. As someone who is very uncomfortable being a "subject" or center of attention, Eileen took that edge off for me by making pleasant small talk, sharing witticisms and getting to know me. No action that she takes is stressed or rushed during the photo shoor, and her vibe transfers to her subjects. Her relaxed nature invites an easy collaboration that continues throughout the duration of the photo shoot.
Eileen is all about connection, especially with young children. When shooting my son at the ages of 2.5 and 6 years, she honed in on him alone and conversed with him at a level that made him feel special and understood. That connection enabled Eileen to capture emotion and expression that went far beyond smiling for the camera or looking cute. Eileen taught my son about her camera, and asked him to teach her about his favorite things during the duration of the shoot. She "played"guitar with him, sped down a slide with him, and made him laugh. That kind of personal investment in the subject brought out so much more expression and life in the resulting pictures.
Light, backdrop, positioning... like any good photographer, Eileen is able to work with the visual variables to set an intriguing scene for each shot that balances with what the subjects are doing. On top of that, Eileen suggests movement, poses, places, and timing in ways that lead to creative and stand out photos. For example, we arranged a photo shoot outside on a farm near the end of a summer's day. As the early dusk started to settle in, Eileen's eyes lit up and she moved us around the field to position us just right to capture this serene glow that was starting to fill the atmosphere. Another example is noticing an empty stream bed filled with all shapes and sizes of smoothed rocks. "What do you think about jumping down there and snapping some shots?" she casually asked my son, who was more than happy to leave the path we were on to explore some place new. Eileen adjusted the settings on her camera to capture images that made my son look simply magical with this most interesting backdrop.
Eileen delivers her services with the utmost professionalism (and perfectionism!). She is responsive, on-time and sets realistic expectations for her customers. She follows through and works with constructive feedback. When I work with her, I feel as if I am her only customer - ever.
We've had the good fortune to have Eileen shoot our family three times over the past six years and it will be very hard to work with a different photographer after being spoiled by Eileen!
