Hired on Thumbtack

I hired Chris Dempsey (and his crew) to lay tile in my basement. I purchased all materials and rented a concrete grinder to help level the floor. He did the rest. I had a few areas of water leakage during the job due to all the rain, but he was able to work around the water. At the end of the day the job was completed. Below are categorical star ratings when combined gave the overall average star rating for Evergreen Enterprises (Chris Dempsey): - Arrived on time each day (1 Star): I asked him to start each day at 8 am and he usually didn't show up until 10 am or later. This meant he either stayed later than I would have like each day (6 or 7pm) or didn't complete much work that day. I felt like I had to prompt him with a phonecall each day to show up. - Job site cleanliness (2 Stars): Bottom line - he doesn't run a real tight ship when it comes to cleanliness. My wife and I usually had some cleaning to do at the end of the each day where his crew came in and out of the house. They used one of our sinks to clean their tools, left tracks and drips (from mixing buckets of grout/mortar) through the living room where they walked, and somehow managed to splatter our garage door and basement walls with quickset mortar. Overall, just not very clean. - Communication (2 Stars): After the first day of work, Chris dropped a bombshell on me that he expected 50% down up front for materials etc. This surprised me considering I was supplying all the materials and rental equipment to complete the job. I paid him anyway because he had done so much work leveling the floor already that he didn't seem like a fraud. However, the next day 8am, 9am, 10am comes and goes - no sign of him. I call him and he says he's having some trouble. He didn't show up until 12:30pm the second day which had me extremely concerned about my money. I told him if he wanted to finish the job I expected him on site by 8am from now on. Well, that never happened and he would never call to let me know what was going on. I always had to initiate the conversation to find out where he was. Standard show time for him is between 10am and noon! - Finished Job on Time (3.5 Stars): He said he'd finish the job in about a week and went about 6 days over. Some of this was due to rain and water leaking into the basement, but mostly it was due to he and his crew's late arrival each day. I found out he was working other jobs at the same time as mine. - Personability (4 Stars): Overall, I had no problem talking to Chris or his crew. They seem like good guys trying to make a living. Chris and Lindsey were helpful in offering solutions to my leaky basement! - Work Quality (4 Stars): Chris is more of a perfectionist than his crew is and I think this prolonged the job because he had to redo work that wasn't done right the first time. The tile floor looks really nice now that it's done, but I can't give a 5 star rating here because his crew just doesn't have the attention to detail necessary. I felt myself saying at the end of each day, "I can fix that, I can redo that, or I can clean that" when they left. - Finished on Budget (5 Stars): Chris completed the job for what he quoted me, not a penny more, and his bid was VERY competitive compared to others bids I received. - Overall Rating (3 Stars) Would I recommend them? It depends - if you've got a flexible schedule and don't care when your contractor shows up each day, then he'll get it done for you. However, if you're like me and tardiness is a deal breaker then I'd pass. Would I hire these guys again for another job? Even though I liked Chris and his guys on a personal level, I wouldn't hire them again because I don't enjoy working with somebody who's chronically late and won't communicate that upfront with me. If Chris can get the deficiencies I noted above squared away, then both he and his customers will be very happy in the future! Time will tell.
Evergreen Enterprises's reply
Thank you Nathan for you review, three stars is a decent review overall. I do appreciate how you feel, however, tile work can be a dirty business. Powdered mortars and grouts get mixed with water to make a paste, every phase of that process can create a mess on its own. Normally this is done outside but due to the rain we had to mix inside on the tiled area we were doing. before we got started i put down plastic self stick runners so we would not hurt your existing floors. We used those runners exclusively, any mess outside of that area would be incidental and easily dusted off. We clean constantly using water and sponges. Tracking water is a challenging issue, wipe down a section of tile and then it gets walked on before is is dry and then its across the room, there is no stopping it. As a result, before I say I am finished, I clean everything myself. Walls, floor, base, doorjambs, thresholds between rooms, everything! Just to make sure it was clean. No evidence the job was done. I was satisfied with the final clean-up. I will admit some of the day to day cleaning issues were less than desirable. That has been addressed. My schedule is my own. I have a business to run. it takes considerable effort to bring it all together. I have appointments to measure, bids to complete, tools to maintain, employees to train, small touch up jobs to return to. The list is almost endless and constantly added to. Therefore I require two things from customers. First, a deposit, that money is for materials and company overhead, it costs money to do business, without it everything stops. Second, Flexibility regarding schedule. I can not be at your house all day, everyday, my schedule won't allow it and often enough I need my help as well so we arrive late or need to leave early as the need arises. Its the nature of the business, its been that way since people started building homes. To date I have not found a way around doing things this way. Job duration, the estimate of six days did not include grinding the concrete as level as possible. The two inches of variance across the floor made your job very challenging. It alone added almost two days to the job. Water seepage up through the concrete added several days as well. My employees spent untold hours sucking up the water flowing into your basement. every half hour we would go over and suck up the puddle, dump the shop vac then go back and suck up more, then return to work for a while. We did not charge you to take care of this and the cost would have been significant, adding over 30 man hours total. The combination of all of these things added to the job significantly but understandably. Communication, there is no happy median here. I have another review that chronicles that I communicated too much. I kept you informed of everything above minor issues. Having to go measure a job or take care of a minor repair is not something I typically discuss with customers. As far as our understanding each other, you asked me to be there by 8 every day. I replied that we would try but never agreed to the 8 am start time. yours was not the only basement flooding at the time. Thousands of homeowners across town were facing the same dilemma. Many of my past clients, and several new, were contacting me for help clearing out their flooded basements, fixing drywall, and finishing the floor so they could get their lives back in order. I regret that you were not completely satisfied with some aspects of the job, we will work on ways to improve in the areas you have illustrated. Without input like yours we may not think to improve ourselves and that would be wasting our ability to learn and improve.
