Ryan Witt installed patio cover for my home. It was a substantial patio 30x10 ft. Ryan did outstanding work and was extremely professional. Ryan was able to translate our request and anticipate our requirements and produce quick estimate. Ryan was also extremely flexible and able to adjust project as it evolved and was able to adjust and add the finishing touches we requested. Project turned out great. Bottom line: Ryan is 5 star contractor. I would highly recommend him to others. He works well with other tradesmen and with inspectors. Ryan delivers quality product in a timely manner at a reasonable price.

Simply put, I consider Don with Zigler Building Systems an Excellent General Contractor and a man of integrity… “That will handle everything and get it done.” Period. Without wasting any extra time or money. I have also been in the construction industry for a great many years. I know the drill well and understand the process. Don has a passion for attention to detail and an excellent sense of high quality workmanship. My project was substantial covering many weeks. A basement re-construction project which required all aspects of construction. I spoke with Don about the overall plan and my thoughts and considerations, he then went to work. Handling any/all day to day decisions by himself, without the need to consult with me. This was perfect as I placed my complete trust in Don and he completely delivered. I felt completely comfortable with Don in our home. I HIGHLY recommend Zigler Building Systems for ANY construction project. Consider it handled!

I had purchased an old, old house near Denver and asked Robert to help me remodel it. It was a real mess looked like maybe, it was worth 5 cents. Well, I gave a bit more than that, but the work involved the following: insulate the exterior walls, the floor, and the ceiling area; remove the bathroom fixtures and keeping with the age of the house install salvaged period fixtures, then do the same with the light fixtures ( I could not believe the fixtures he came up with for the bath and house lighting, they were incredible). It was then that I realized I was going to be in for a real treat. This young man I thought I would do a favor giving him a job and something to do, was making my old old house into a very charming roomy home anyone would be proud to entertain mom and dad, a lady friend, or just a best friend. And after filling in a floor furnace hole in the living room with matching hard wood and sanding and totally refinishing floors through the house I was really imbarrished with what I had agreed to pay him. He had a lot more experience than the freckles and wrinkles on his face told me when I first met him. I ask him what his family did for a living and he explained his dad was a carpenter having worked with GE Johnson at one time and retired a facilities Project Manager for the County of Los Angeles, his mother was a high end interior decorator near the Broadmore area and his older brother was an Architect. I figure he has made me near a 100 grand, and I did pay him more. If you are so lucky to have Bobby do some work for you, you will not be disappointed. don't let his freckles and wrinkles fool you. He is an artist! And he really means it when he says that he takes a lot of pride in the work he finishes.

I hired Goodland Decking to replace approximately half of my total fence.  I took estimates from 6 service vendors for this work.  I was originally skeptical about hiring Goodland Decking given that I could not find much in terms of reviews of their business.  However, in conversation with Seth, he explained that he and his family had recently moved to Colorado from California and were working on getting the business up and going.  They have extensive examples of the work they performed in California.   I took a chance and hired them, and I'm glad I did.  Seth, a carpenter by trade, helped me make an intelligent decision about the selection of materials for my fence including wood type, picket width, post type, and gate dimensions.  He works with his father, Ron, who is a mason by trade.  The two of them make a great pair.  Seth's carpentry experience and Ron's masonry experience blend well.  They removed my old fence, installed new posts, railings, and pickets to my specifications.  Seth even included an extra-wide picket on the inside to cover the metal fence posts I selected.  Although a small touch, it added a lot to the project and speaks to the quality which Seth tries to achieve.  Additionally, he identified a few pickets that split when he installed them or otherwise weren't to his standards.  He removed and replaced them without me even having to point them out.  This is a clear indicator to me that he truly takes pride in his work.   Previously, I had a disaster of a gate that could only be opened from one side and wouldn't open all the way.  Seth installed a new gate that opened from both sides and leveled the ground out to allow the fence to swing open entirely where it would not previously.  He also installed a second gate on another portion of my fence where one did not exist previously to my specifications.  In both instances, the fence was built from scratch and he did not use one of those fence "kits" that you see in stores.  This was true craftsmanship.   Both Seth and Ron were polite, professional, and truly grateful to have earned my business.  They were respectful of my pets, my children, and other family at my home.  They cleaned up at the end of each day and weren't satisfied until the work met their high standards.   I highly recommend Goodland Decking.  I'll be contacting Seth in near future for some work I'm planning on my deck.

Austin has completed an amazing amount of "high quality" carpentry work for me during the last 12 months. The main projects included, remodeling our kitchen and my office! He built a custom Bookcase that really looks awesome! Soon he will be putting in a Two-car Carport and a fence for my back yard. I have found that he's extremely Honest and very professional. I just moved to Pueblo 18 months ago from Maine and consider myself very lucky to have found such a quality carpenter, especially since we moved here without knowing anybody local. I recommend him highly!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

      How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
