We have been so impressed with Justin and his crew. Justin came over to give us a quote on the removal of two Siberian elm trees. While he was at our home he removed a lilac stump. He saves us hours and hours that day! When he removed the Siberian Elms from our yard he arrived earlier than expected but worked quickly and throughly with a few other members of his crew. He removed both trees without leaving a trace of a branch or twig. Justin has been incredibly responsive and considerate. His quote was also significantly more reasonable than other quotes we received. I highly recommend using Vasbyt tree tech for any tree removal needs you may have.

Mickey was prompt to answer my inquiry about lawn service. He was able to attend to our lawn in a timely manner and did everything well. He made sure to ask if the bushes and trees were trimmed to my satisfaction. His crew was nice and helpful and I felt they all did a great job for a good price. He also came back the next day like he said he would to gather some clippings he didn't have room for at the time.

After I got a service scheduled, the crew showed up, and did an excellent job. They were all very polite and professional. I needed a few extra things done: they had no problems with it. They accomplished everything and cleaned up nicely. I am very happy with the whole experience. Mike and Joni (the owners) were very professional and friendly. I would recommend their services to anyone needing tree work.

He is a hard worker with high quality work. He removed 300 square feet of sod by himself in just a few hours. Very professional and easy to work with. He removed sod, installed edging and weed tarp, planted 4 trees, installed 5 tons of rock and finished the trees with a nice mulch look. Highly recommended.

Hired John to remove a medium size tree that was leaning over my neighbors driveway, clean all the gutters, and remove a years worth of tree branches and leaves from the back yard. John gave us a fair price and completed everything beyond our expectations. We definitely plan to hire John again for some other projects that we need completed. It has been a great relief to find someone dependable and with a great work ethic.

Prestige handled my sprinkler start up and winterization this year, which was about 50 rental units. All of the maintenance on sprinklers throughout the summer was also managed by them. I referred them to multiple owners who used their services also. I also work with a lot of homes that are being rehabbed for resale, Prestige handled most of the landscaping on these properties; to include tree trimming, fence repair/installation, yard clean up, new sod, mulch and rock. If it is outside Prestige handles it for our company. I will continue to use their services and refer them to my clients.

While my yard was probably a very small project for Tomas and his team, they did a fantastic job and I am very satisfied with the results. When I first met with Tomas, he said his guys worked fast, he was not kidding. They started at 8 AM and by 4 PM they had removed a bush and small tree from my front yard, had scraped the old weeds and grass, put down edging and rock over a third of the yard, put in a mulch bed and transplanted two flower plants I wished to keep and had the rest of the yard ready for sod. In addition, they had trimmed my overgrown hedge, relocated several sprinkler heads, removed a rotting wood fence from the back yard and had posts set for a new fence. The next day the fence team finished the fence in very short order and sod was laid in the front yard the following day. So, in three days the entire look of my house was totally changed and it looks great! Working with Tomas and his guys was a treat.

Dena, Mel and crew are the most delightful, responsive and polite team to work with ever! They get it and will respectively listen to your ideas and connect with you no matter the budget. We had them do our entire landscaping front and back which included hardscape, a pergola, pavers, sod, berms, a water feature, flowers, and numerous trees. Albeit it a lot of work but a small yard, they over-the-top amazed us with their design ideas and customer service. Our yards are GORGEOUS! We will also be using them in the future for all our maintenance needs.

We hired A Better Edge 4 or5 years ago. They put a stamped edge around 2 large flower beds and a tree ring for us. We love it. It was beautiful when they did it and after all this time is still beautiful. The color has faded somewhat but we still are very happy with it. In fact, we are looking to do more in the back yard this spring. The crew was awesome. They went above and beyond. We have had people stop and ask us what is was and who did it for us. We were happy to give out " A Better Edge" recommendation. Can't wait to have the back yard done.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
