I brought my son to Josh from a performance oriented music school because I recognized that while he was learning how to perform, there were some significant gaps in his knowledge and technique. Josh immediately honed in on and began to fix issues with that his performance coach never addressed. Specifically: relaxing his grip and his shoulders, proper posture, listening vs. hearing, timekeeping, feel, and how to create rhythms and fills that properly support and enhance the tune.
Prior to starting with Josh, my son's old coach stressed playing out and playing loud. Josh constantly stresses that recklessly banging on drums will lead to repetitive motion injuries and possibly shorten your career, while relaxing saves your joints and leads to better tone and more refined playing.
Josh has also been beneficial in helping my son with focus and concentration issues. He recognizes when he is lost in his head and he and he addresses it within the context of the music. Josh holds him accountable for being a good listener, but he never makes him feel deficient when his mind drifts.
Aside from being a great teacher, Josh is also an excellent player. His style is very musical and he is fun to listen to. My son is starting to emulate him in his practice at home. When I listen to him play freestyle, I am blown away at how much more complete he is sounding after only a couple of months with Josh. I am very happy that we found him.
