Dave was awesome! He was quick to respond to every email and worked hard to make my experience fit the job description. I was looking to make a career change and use my personal experience as qualification. Dave was able to make it all make sense on my resume and the hiring manager told me that he read my resume twice all the way through before calling me in. I was able to land the job and have been there for several months now. Thank you so much Dave! I would recommend this service to anyone even if you think your resume writing skills are good, its worth the money for sure!

Chris scrutinized my manuscript like a primate picking gnats. He told me what worked, what did not, why, and how to fix my errors. In his comprehensive critique, he gave writing examples to clarify his advice and resources to explore for my development. Afterwards, he answered my questions in a timely and effective manner. Easy to work with and flexible with payment, Chris is worth the expense and experience.

I started taking lessons with Laura to resume my Spanish studies after a 6 year gap and to improve my Spanish conversation skills for travel purposes. I have benefited from her teaching style and learning approach greatly. Each lesson is focused on areas which I struggle and she incorporates reading, writing, and communication into each lesson. Nevertheless, success is still directly proportional to the time and effort I put into each lesson after class, however Laura has provided me with the resources and instruction necessary to learn the language. In the 6 or 7 classes I have had with her already my skills have improved, and I look forward to continue to study with her and advance my Spanish conversation skills over the coming year.

Elizabeth edited my short story. I worked on it for a few months and was uncertain that it was good enough to be submitted to a number of writing contests. Elizabeth skillfully edited and made suggestions and when she sent the finished version back to me, it all came together and I beamed with pride. I am very pleased with her professionalism and openness. She called me and gave me her personal phone number and told me to call her with any questions, this put me at ease and I knew that I had a chosen a great editor to work with. I will use her again and again! Victoria Riley

I highly recommend Nancy Sparrow and Sparrow Solutions for all business and household support! I have used their Business Services and their Personal Concierge services since 2008. I have 100% trust in them. Nancy is a dynamic person and I trust her and her team to do whatever it takes to get things done. On the personal side...they manage my credit cards, finances, my son's schedule, my calendar, travel arrangements, household projects, errands, storage units, etc. As a note...she is also a very solid editor of copy. On the Business Services side, SS provides admin support, inventory, operational support, business development and research, marketing and sales, writing and editing as well as lots of projects we don't have specific staff for. It would be a mistake not to go with Sparrow Solutions.

I hired Laura to edit my first novel. I had to put total trust in her to edit my ‘baby’ and she did a beautiful job. What I like about her work is that she didn’t change my voice through the edits. It was still clearly my style of writing, just done professionally. She is also very flexible to the client’s needs, be it just bare bones editing or suggestions and rephrasing if needed. This makes her very easy to work with and affordable. I would highly recommend her. Author of Your Every Wish

Working with Amber has been an incredible experience. Amber was available on short notice and always quick to respond to my many questions. Amber helped me to proofread my law school application and made sure that it was error free. She also gave me feedback on my content. It was incredibly helpful to hear an informed opinion on my essays, and the feedback she gave was always helpful and insightful. I would not hesitate to contact Amber in the future if I ever need to make sure a piece of writing is 100% perfect, and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for high quality, professional editing for any kind of writing project. Incredibly informative and helpful. Margaret provided excellent feedback and was constructive in her editing. My essay was much more cohesive because of her editing, but still allowed my own voice to show through. I would highly recommend her for any writing or editing assistance!

Julian has been helping us with writing content for our corporate blog. Based on a topic, Julian researched and wrote up the blog that succinctly presented the goals of the blog. It was well received and has become a template for all our future blog posts. He does his research, compiles the talking points and articulates them very well in the blog. I like his style

About

I don’t edit for writers, but with writers. Yes, I’ll make changes and comments and suggestions and omissions and give you my educated opinions, but writing is a communal activity. It exists in an interactive space, a place where a writer can explore all types of creativity. My job as your editor is to guide and shape your writing, to bolster what’s working and encourage it—and you—to keep going. You write. I observe, engage, and respond. Then together we comb out the tangles and add in some conditioner—because that’s what working with me as your editor will be like: we’ll smooth out the rough drafts, give it all a solid foundation so then the story can continue to grow. General edits and line edits. Private lessons: Tell Chelsey what you want to work on, and she'll choose a book that she thinks would be helpful in accordance to your wants/needs, and will read the book with you. She will assign weekly lessons and questions about different craft aspects in the book, as well as writing exercises. Each week, the writer emails Chelsey a piece of writing under 2000 words (either a single piece of writing or a selection of smaller pieces), and she'll do those hardcore edits. The amount of writing you send to Chelsey is up to you. Some people like to get comments on the writing exercises provided to them. Some like to submit the latest version of a piece she/he/ze is working on. Either of these options--or any other ones you might come up with--are fine. The focus here is on your writing. Chelsey will accommodate for and support all of the ways in which you want to learn and work.

Much of my background has resulted from writing and editing for major newspapers, including the Wichita (KS) Eagle, the Denver (CO) Post and the Pacific Stars & Stripes, and also the Tokyo Bureau of Associated Press. I was co-publisher of three books for attorneys and judges, one of which was purchased by the Colorado Bar Assn. and now pays us occasional royalties. I have produced dozens of periodical newsletters for public and private sector organizations, as well as speeches, brochures and advertisements for political candidates and referendum sponsors. My university major was creative writing.

About

I offer reading, writing, and test prep tutoring services to all ages. After graduating with honors from Lesley University with an M.Ed. in English Education, I worked for three years as an English teacher. During this time, I taught English 8, English 10, English 12, AP Language & Composition, Creative Writing, and SAT Reading & Writing. I also taught after school and weekend SAT Prep sessions. I am a licensed educator for English 8-12 in both Massachusetts and Texas. I also hold a supplementary license in special needs education in Texas. Additionally, I have experience working with both special needs students and English language learners. I left teaching when my husband's job moved us to Colorado and we decided to have a baby. I've been working as a freelance writer and editor for over a year. However, I miss working with students and am looking to expand my services into tutoring.

About

I edit, write, copyedit, proofread, and provide a full range of editorial, web design, graphic design, book design and technical services for Ellen Byerrum, author of the Crime of Fashion Mysteries, and for our independent publishing imprint, Lethal Black Dress Press. LBDP now has three titles in print (in both e-book and trade paperback formats), and a fourth title is in preparation. The Crime of Fashion series includes ten novels to date, with the eleventh projected to release in late 2015. The first nine books in the series are published by Penguin Group USA, and two have been filmed. Byerrum also writes nonfiction and non-series fiction. I've served as in-house editor for all of her work from the inception of the series, as well as for her plays, her other fiction, and her Web site (ellenbyerrum.com). Our publications to date is total more than one million words. I perform all book editing functions for Byerrum's published writing, and for all Lethal Black Dress Press publications. Specifically, that includes substantive editing; line editing; copyediting; editorial critique, commentary, and feedback; proofreading; document production; and preparation of the final publication-ready documents. I also create the cover art and jacket design, design the book interiors, and perform production editing for the author's independently published e-books and paperbacks. I design, create, and maintain the Web site promoting her work; write and/or edit site and blog content; provide photography, image editing, and graphic design; research story elements, factual questions, and editorial issues; serve as tech support for our IT system; and create Web and print promotional pieces, such as postcards, posters, bookmarks, handouts, and media releases. My work is part of the process for all of Byerrum's writing that reaches the public, and for every Lethal Black Dress Press publication.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
