The workers are polite and come promptly and work very hard. I hired them to do one job at first... to demolish a 14 X 18 foot wall of bricks/entertainment center in a new home that I purchased. My husband and I were very pleased and then re-hired the crew to do a dozen more things to renovate and update this home. Among the tasks they removed tile, removed a 3-way facing gas fireplace that was awkwardly placed, remove brick facing off some columns, move a few floor outlets, take out dated shower sliding doors and move chandeliers and some utility cabinets (so I'd have more space for my large washer/dryer). And more! This is an excellent company that I will continue to use for smaller projects. No one on the team even flinched when I changed my mind about things, they just go with the flow... and do what I ask like true professionals. Pricing on my original project was the best on thumbtack, and continues to be very fair.

Let's start with the diverse number of projects Sterling completed for my family. He built (what felt like 1,000,000) new cabinet doors for our ugly painted oak kitchen and dining room cabinets. He also sanded the cupboard fronts and oiled them all. They went from looking cadaverous (is that a word?) to alive and truly beautiful. Next he cut a doorway/archway in a wall and matched it pretty perfectly to an existing opening. This project included a walnut threshold. Lastly he built us 3 custom walnut tables. All of his work is meticulous. His craftsmanship is exactly what I wanted. The trade off, I feel for his impeccable craftsmanship is the timing. I suspect their are craftsmen out there who are faster. I heard somewhere- that with craft work it's successful if you get 2/3 from the following criteria: fast, affordable, and high quality. With Sterling you get affordable and high quality. In other words, successful.

Mike originally came out to install 3 bathroom cabinets. But he did such a great job I asked him to take care of a few other things. Trimming out the fire place, trimming out the new stair way and finishing of the new stairs and matching the stain perfectly. If you need anything Mike not only has a ton of knowledge but is great to work with. I do fix n flips for a living and with how hard it is to find quality work, Mike is someone I can trust and will continue to work with.

We had an 8' cabinet (two 4 ft sections) that actually fell off our laundry room wall. Charlie rebuilt the cabinets for us and explained that the back of the original cabinets had been plywood and eventually couldn't hold the weight of the contents (which really wasn't that much) and thus caused the cabinets to pull away from the wall. Anyway, Charlie has years of cabinet making experience and explained exactly what needed to be done to rebuild the cabinets, make them stronger and re-install them. He was easy to work with and we are delighted with his finished work. We are happy to recommend him to anyone who needs new cabinets or cabinet repairs.

Matt helped us with a variety of jobs related to our kitchen renovation. We had a very outdated (1940-1950's era) kitchen, and were working to renovate through IKEA. A group associated with IKEA installed new cabinets and countertops, and Matt did literally EVERYTHING else. He performed a difficult demo and prepped our walls for install, and afterwards worked to finish all other aspects of our project- including new tile flooring, cutting for and installing a new sink, and properly installing a microwave/hood combo. These tasks are only a small portion of the total body of work Matt completed however. All told, this was a BIG project for a relatively small kitchen; nonetheless we could not have been more pleased with Matt's craftsmanship, attention to detail, and thoroughness. Matt did not leave anything undone and is clearly passionate about providing the best work possible. Communicating and working with Matt was very easy & straightforward, and there were never any questions about the job being done or the quality of work. Even when we asked Matt do perform additional duties midway through out project, he was flexible in incorporating these additions in. We could not be more happy with our new kitchen and would highly recommend Matt & Big Red Innovations to others (and we will likely be working with him again in the future!).

The expertise of harvest design can't be matched he went above and be on. Mike with harvest design pays lots attention to the smallest details. My project was my idea, I had very little cabinet space and needed more counters. I through out my plan and he put it into motion , cabinets were custom built and a counter top added across the top of cabinets to create a counter top. I later had tile added. .The project to took longer than expected due unexpected circumstances on both our parts. The finished results were we'll with the wait. I would hire again.

We have a log home so had some very specific needs. Ronny did a great job updating our kitchen cabinets, countertops and backsplash. Her prices were affordable and she was very competent in coordinating all aspects of our remodel, including plumbing and electrical. Loved her custom decorative plaster! So pleasant to work with a professional who responds to her clients needs and communicates well -- hard to find today.

Kiko installed a brand new kitchen, complete with cupboards, exterior and interior lighting and built in microwave. Over 100 boxes arrived from Ikea and Kiko quickly assembled the cabinets without missing a step; we were at a loss as what goes where when they arrived. Kiko was professional, courteous, and finished the project on time and within the quoted price. I highly recommend Kiko and will hire him again if we have a kitchen remodel.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.
