Jeff did a fantastic job laying ~660SF new white oak flooring in our remodel project. He works quickly but super efficiently. We had to change our wood contractor last minute and Kate and Joel were very accommodating. They helped make it work for us and our timeline. This is the beginning of other wood install projects in our house and we will definitely reach out to them again.

Excellent, outstanding , well crafted, professional and a job well done. That's our description for the second floor, 21 fts. Patio extension he crafted on our house. It blend perfect with the existent patio. The bottom is also flushed and the columns are just the same style. Ryan was not only an excellent carpenter creating an exact extension of our existent patio, he also installed a barn door in our bathroom, installed a sliding door where a window was located, fixed the kitchen top cabinet and provided accurate guidance and advise at every single important decision we had to make in the process. His effort and dedication facilitated a stressful process. He is not only our carpenter; today is our friend. This wonderful man is extremely respectful, dedicated, positive, methodical on his crafting process. He is proud of his work's result and enjoyed the ride of remodel our house. He is well connected with skilled construction men that also helped in specific tasks at the house. If you are looking for a skilled, fair price, professional and dedicated carpenter or construction company which is licensed, possess insurance and know the legal process to get a construction permit, RW remodelers is the company you should trust.

Todd and Meaghan make a great team. They painted and stained exterior and interior space, helped with color selection, installed floor trim, installed MDF around closet walls, fixed some poorly done work (by my carpenter) by retrimming out ceiling joists (see picture). Family business, good value, contribute good ideas to the project, excellent at communication, and quality of work was beyond expectations. Could not be happier with the results.

Awesome work! I hired them to install a be front door I purchased at Home Depot. We initially were going to use HD subcontractors but that proves to be a challenge. So glad I found thumbtack and immediately got qualified contractors, like Olga and Demitry. I would hire them again, on time, honast, hard working "do what they say" type of company! Fine work with Quality Woodworks LLC!

We had an issue where the previous homeowners built their deck around the pool cover mechanism of the pool. Needed an access point created to get to it. Andrew Scott Builders did a great and quality job creating that access point. Went above and beyond. Would highly recommend again for future projects!

I have used Kyle on two projects now and highly recommend him for any type of job. The first project was reinforcing my wobbly deck. He added additional supports and shored up the railing. The deck no longer wobbles. Next, I had him remove a supporting wall in my kitchen and install a support header, then patch and prepare the area for paint. The job was completed professionally in just a few days, and the end product looked like the home was originally built without that wall. I am very happy with his work product, communication and rates. I would recommend his services to anyone who needs a Master Carpenter!

Scott was the first to respond to our inquiry for a carpenter and showed up on time and did a good job. He installed a new door at one of our rentals properties, as the previous door was damaged by a burglary attempt. We were happy with the quality of work and thought the price was very fair. We look forward to working with him again in the future!

Abstact builders is a great source for me. Silas has worked on older homes so is familiar with the things he could run into. Although mine is over 100 yrs old. Puting in a window in the kitchen seemed easy enough til it didn't pop out and he found it bound in lath and plaster. No one freaked out but it took saws and patience, and new ideas and Silas had all that. He is not working continually but constantly working in one part of the house or another, finding what works and what doesn't, reorganizing the way things need to be done instead what CAN be done to get it overwith. I am very impressed and by the time he is finished this will be a working model that is also beautiful and still a very old home. 7

Tiling area at was part of a deck now converted into a sunroom. Work included tiling stairs that access the lower level of the sunroom. The work was very difficult because the builder was not precise in the dimensions of the stairs. Daniel and his assistant Scott were meticulous in getting the tile set evenly. The results are outstanding. Took longer than expected, but that was due to the difficult stair area. The post cleanup was done very well...the work area was left ad clean as it was before work and cutting began

We feel very fortunate to have found KC and Heartwood Carpentry. He was able to provide carpentry services to finish a basement renovation project which included finishing doorways, hanging doors, installing custom door jambs and trim around doors and windows. We were impressed by his ability to promptly and professionally provide extremely high quality work at reasonable prices. We have decided to continue to work with Heartwood Carpentry for construction of custom built in shelving and cabinets. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a skilled carpenter able to be adaptable to any job.

My husband and I had an outstanding experience working with Allcon Builders. We were looking for a reliable, professional company to add a wood patio cover to our back porch. Matt called us back right away and went out of his way to find out exactly what we wanted. He spent time talking with us before making his plans and was extremely understanding if we wanted to make changes. Throughout the process, everyone was great to work with. It was clear that Matt wanted to make sure we were completely satisfied. We love how our cover turned out and will definitely be using Allcon for any future jobs or projects we would like to take care of around the house. I highly recommend using Allcon if you need any work done, big or small.

My husband and I hired Custom Builders LLC (Kaleb) to tear down the half hall staircase leading to the second level of our home and replaced it with a open rail and baluster staircase. Kaleb's responsiveness throughout the job was great. We where kept informed about the timing of when materials would arrive and when each segment of the job would be completed. Kaleb's work is high quality and he kept a very clean work space between each segment of the project. We got very good value for the job. We had done some research about prices before we hired Custom Builders and found Kaleb's price for the job was very reasonable. The timing on completion of each segment of the job was longer than planned. Completion time was double the time that was initially set. There were a number of issues with getting the correct materials from Kaleb's vender. If you are willing to work with a small contractor who does the work himself Kaleb Shultz (Custom Builders LLC) is your guy.

We have hired Duke Heritage Builders for several projects around the house. The main one was our bathroom. The bathroom was very old so everything needed to be removed and replaced (except for the bath tub). This included, plumbing fixtures, shower tile, painting, floor tile, installing shower fixtures, vanity, mirror, toilet, towel bars. The whole project took only one week! Though they are very time efficient, they are also are very thoughtful and precise with their work, working with us to make the best use of the small bathroom space. We are completely satisfied with their work and Johnny especially is very personable, friendly and helpful. We would recommend Duke Heritage Builders to everyone. Their prices are very fair and affordable; a very trustworthy company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
