Donna was simply excellent! She treated my small job as though it was just as important to her as a huge job would be and transformed my old room into a gorgeous, living work of art. Her design ideas were simply lovely and she seemed to be able to tell me what I wanted before I knew myself! Her carpenter is excellent as well. Nothing but praise for Decor Reform!

Lena was extremely responsive and easy to work with. She is a true professional at interior design and was able come to our home and immediately grasped what we wanted to do and had lots of ideas. She is able to work with a wide range of budgets. The process is like being on one of the home remodel shows, you come home and it is all done. POOF! Highly recommend working with Lena and D2D.

I should be writing this review when I can include photos, but maybe I can update it once some of the Maryann magic has happened. I decided to go ahead however and let everyone know how flexible, responsive and talented she is! Maryann is helping us with our new townhome and the first phase is paint. Maryann picked fabulous colors and referred me to a terrific painter. The second phase will be help with furniture layout and furniture recommendations to achieve the look I want. I keep vacillating between purchasing a package that Maryann can put together or having her help me by the hour, and Maryann has been so understanding. Maryann has my highest recommendation and I'll update with photos soon! Fabulous person and designer!

I can't say enough positive things about Diana. She has deep design knowledge, a great eye, and provides excellent service at incredibly reasonable prices. Diana has handled both large and small projects for me. She designed two living rooms (furniture layout and selection, paint color, accessories), designed the re-model of our master bathroom, and gave design advice for our vacation condo with an emphasis on inexpensive and DIY improvements. Diana has also helped with smaller projects. Most recently we spent 30 minutes talking about how to set up a spare bedroom to serve as a teen study with minimal expense, including color ideas and a great budget-friendly desk solution from Ikea. As I told her at the time, it was the most cost-effective half-hour of service that I have ever gotten! Diana has also picked the paint colors for the outside of my house and has gone shopping with me to find smaller accessories/pieces of furniture to fill in some empty spots in the house. As for cost, I particularly appreciate that Diana doesn't get any "hidden" fees (which another designer burned me on in the past). She charges a flat (and shockingly reasonable) hourly rate, and that's it. She's willing to do a short consult, or a longer detailed and drawn-out plan, according to your budget and needs. Diana also knows the best places to shop to get good deals, and she finds great stuff online which she adds to a Pinterest site she set up for me for easy access. Bottom line, Diana has made my house much more beautiful, and I didn't have to pay outrageous designer fees to get it. I recommend her highly.

Truly have had the best experience with UNUM. They were excited about our project, but never pushy about design elements or aesthetic. We felt genuinely valued as clients as Jim and Adam would often go above and beyond to design the space we saw in our wildest dreams. Their renderings are spectacular, and they are always prepared with the proper drawings and advice. They are always on time, easy to work with, and meetings are always comfortable. There's no question too small or silly to ask them, and they will always take the time to explain each detail. Highly recommend working with them!

Kristy helped me with the overall decor and design in my basement renovation. Kristy had a way of making me feel comfortable with her the minute we met and really listened to what I was looking for in my final product. Kristy paid attention to my needs and worked to help me complete my vision within a reasonable budget and timeframe. I continue to seek Kristy's guidance and expertise in other areas during the transition of my home and highly recommend her to help anyone seeking to create their dream home.

Natalie is a bright light and such a pleasure to work with. From the first moment, she gave her undivided attention to listen and hear what my design needs were, and she has a way of making you feel special with every single detail, no matter how big or small. Not only did we accomplish what I was hoping for, but she exceeded my expectations with her creative ideas that added to what I had envisioned. She is incredibly talented and highly professional. I love my space and am so grateful that I found her. I would highly recommend hiring her - you will not be disappointed.

It was a pleasure working with Vicki. I had ordered an oversized custom hooked rug from her. I didn’t want my decor to over shadow it so chose to let Vicki handle the whole project. I was thrilled with the result.

This was our first experience in working with a designer, and I don't know if this is always the case, but we couldn't have asked for a better experience! Meg is creative and enthusiastic with a keen eye for color and design, and she took time to figure out our style and preferences. We remodeled the main floor of our house, and once she had a sense about our taste, Meg provided us lots of choices for anything from furniture to rugs to flooring to color scheme throughout our home. All of our friends are amazed with our "new" house! Meg simplified what would have been an otherwise overwhelming project. She was extremely responsive and easy to work with. We wholeheartedly recommend Meg to others and would definitely use her again when we decide to remodel other parts of our home!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

        • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
        • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
          • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
        • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
          • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
        • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
        • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
