Paul of Rope N Saddle is personable and aims to please. He and his partner recently pruned two of my trees. I checked the references that he gave me and they spoke highly of their experiences with Rope N Saddle. I would have liked Paul to have arrived as early as we had agreed upon, but on the day of service he did call and came to my house when he said he would, which was later than we had originally agreed upon when he provided me with his fair and reasonable estimate. However, once at my house, Paul & his partner worked steadily. I do believe that I got my moneys worth of tree pruning by hiring Rope & Saddle. His work was decent and his price was good.

Mike and the team were professional, honest, hard working and efficient in taking out and grinding down a variety of trees, shrubs, tree stumps, shrub stumps, etc. Mike provided a very fair quote for the work and knocked it out the day after the quote. I couldn't be any happier with the work he and his team did and will be referring Green Arbor Masters to others every chance I get. Thank you!!

Roger gave us an unbelievably fair estimate, came on time, worked quickly and did a great job. They removed eight trees, ground the stumps and trimmed up a few other trees in our yard. We have used more expensive tree trimmers and Roger and his crew did a much better job!

I hired Drake and his team to remove a 10ft tree (and stump) in my backyard. They did an excellent job. I was flexible on the time and day they could come over and in return they were able to do the work ahead of schedule. It took them just over an hour using their own tools the area they left is clean and tidy. I think that likely due to his lower overhead costs, Drake's in an excellent situation to tackle these smaller jobs that a normal landscaping company would charge a minimum of $400+ to do. Not to say I wouldn't recommend him for larger jobs as well.

Mario removed two large shrubs from the front of my property and did an outstanding job - so much so that I hired them to come back and trim a very large tree in the back yard. Mario is professional, courteous and friendly... and clearly knows a lot about trees. He is also honest!! When he gave me the estimate for trimming the tree, he questioned the health of it and suggested that we schedule a root treatment in the Fall. But after working on it a few weeks later he told me that it was in much better health than it had appeared and that I did NOT need to do the expensive treatment after all. He is now my "go to" guy for anything tree or shrub related :)

Call back- quick. Came out to give an estimate-quick. Scheduled a week out, they were busy, so that was fine. Did the job quick, professionally and were friendly enough. One negative was they dropped a branch on the electricity line. Our electricity was out all day. They did call xcel for us... And it was xcel that took all day not the tree trimmers fault. I would hire them again and recommend.

They were very professional and courteous. The company that actually cut our tree down left a mess then snow covered it up. Above and beyond cleaned it all up after grinding the stump. Prompt and safe. I will recommend them to everyone. Thanks guys!!

We worked with Sheldon as the Customer Service Rep. for M&C Concrete. We were a little confused initially because we used Thumbtack to find a Concrete contractor, so when we saw that Sheldon does tree removal we weren't sure why he came up as an option for concrete. We did end up contacting him along with about 6 other contractors to get quotes on pouring a patio. He showed up on schedule with Gregorio from M&C Concrete and took some measurements. They had us an estimate the next day. We were very happy with the quote from M&C concrete and with their knowledge and experience. Sheldon was the middle man between us and M&C concrete, which he handled very professionally. The concrete has been finished for about week now and so far so good!

It took a couple of tries to connect with Leaf Life - missing each others calls and such. Once we connected Leaf Life came out within 48 hours to take a look at several trees and shrubs needing to be trimmed. We agreed to their very reasonable quote and, boom, just like that, they were there in just over 24 hours. Alex and his team did a great job. One of the trees was a very difficult job. It was over 80 feet tall with branches that extended over our fence and hovered over our neighbors deck. They took down those dangerous branches expertly, no damage to us or the neighbor. Then they completed the job with an excellent clean up. We were very satisfied both with the work completed and the pricing. I recommend Alex and his team to anyone needing trees trimmed or shrubs trimmed and shaped. Great work Alex! Thanks.

Nik arrived to survey the work needed and quoted a very reasonable price for his 2-man crew to remove a dead tree and trim up all the rest. All three arrived promptly as promised and these pros worked hard all day. Cleanup was perfection, all debris hauled away. Cannot recommend these folks highly enough. They are professionals in every way, knowledgeable and hard working....VERY reasonably priced. Don't call anyone else! I know that I won't, and am looking forward to fruit tree pruning this winter. Thank you N&D!

Scott is professional and dependable. He has done a few jobs for us--pruning, planting, and removing. He evaluated the health of our trees and advised us about what we could expect. He took out one tree that was mostly dead and planted a new one in its place. He took out another tree that had been damaged in a late snowfall. We talked with him about trying to save it, and he felt the chances of it making it were small, which is consistent with what others had told us. On the jobs involving pruning or tree removal, he cleaned up, leaving us with no mess. We were very happy with his work.

Lucas did 2 difficult removals for me, both tall pines. The first was an 80' plus tree 22" from my house overhanging my roof, I was nervous! He spent about 4 hours carefully limbing, topping, and then droping the stick. Little more than a few twigs ended up on my roof (they were swept off) and the lawn was left totaly clear of debris. The second tree was close to the road and at the edge of my driveway and a stand of mature rhododendrons, it would have been best taken out with a crane but the town wanted a police detail in the road if we used a crane, expensive! Lucas assured me he could limb it on the way up and drop the stick in small chunks on the way down, keeping all debris away from the road. I went just as he said and saved me a good cunk of change over hiring a crane and a cop. Thank you Lucas and crew for a great job.

I am extremely happy with James & Jim Tree Service who did an excellent job for me on a very difficult tree trimming task. James & Jim Tree Service provided high quality work and service done professionally, safely and at a reasonable cost. I have a large tree at the back of my garage that required large limbs overhanging the garage to be removed. James & Jim Tree Service performed the challenging job in workmanlike manner and the tree now looks great. I would recommend James & Jim Tree Service for any tree care work you might need to have done.

As easy as it gets! I had two tree stumps that required grinding and I worked with Sherry and her team at A&R Tree to do the job. They responded quickly and professionally with a quote and several different options for when the work could be complete allowing me to pick the time that worked best for my schedule. The crew showed up on time and completed the work to my satisfaction. I'll definitely be using A&R Tree for future work

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
