Francisco cleaned our gutters on a Saturday morning at 9AM. He arrived early and got straight to work and finished in a little over an hour. He noticed that one of our windows was not sealed properly which was very helpful!! Great service.

I had two egress windows installed. They did a great job and they finished the project with lightening speed. Most contractors quoted at least a four week lead time. With Beyond Boundaries, my two egress windows were installed the very next week. The cost was very reasonable compared to the other two quotes that I received. Very satisfied with the whole experience.

Maria and her sister did an incredible job! They were extremely thorough. My fridge hasn't been that clean in years, they cleaned inside the oven, and the inside of the cupboards look new. All the windows are sparkling. I just can't say enough about how great the cleaning was!

Last year, upon purchasing a new house, we found that many of the windows were in bad shape. They were old, warped, and leaking. Being a first-time homeowner, I blundered around until I found Thumbtack, and HRTI offered to help almost immediately. The service I received from HRTI in purchasing new windows and having them installed was quick, professionally done, and reasonably priced to the point that, when we decided to get the rest of the bad windows replaced this year, there wasn't even a question of with whom we'd be working. Our experience with HRTI the second time was just as good as the first, and we are thrilled with the quality of the service. I could not recommend HRTI more highly.

Sloan Windows exceeded all expectations! Communication was easy and effective. I was able to get an estimate immediately on a Saturday, which took about 10 mins. The quote was less than half of what Home Depot quoted. Work was done less than a week after the consultation, completed in half a day, the employees were professional and punctual, and the work is high quality. Anton informed me of a 2 year warrantee on the sliding door, low E tempered glass, and energy saving qualities. He was even willing to give me a discount if I purchased two. Will definitely be calling in the future for all glass and window needs!

My job was small - a few screens that the HOA objected to, plus re-seating some windows. Chris took care of my screens right away, showing understanding for my plight and then took care of my windows. He wasn't above this little job! He treated me with dignity. Chris was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and kept in touch from point of contact through job completion. I would gladly recommend Universal Windows Direct to anyone, big job or small! N. Mike was amazing! I continued to toss curve balls at him, he quickly adjusted and made it happen at well below what I thought I would end up paying. HIGH quality work, quick to respond/schedule/complete and he needed no hand holding what so ever; I couldn't have asked for more. I simply wish he did more than siding and windows because I would gladly hire him again!

Great overall experience with Zach, start to finish. We were in a bad position where we needed ONE window replaced and all other quotes were sky high, IF they even bothered to respond to my inquiry. Zach was great from the beginning, understanding of the situation and gave us a great price. Project was done much more quickly than the big guys could do, too. He kept me informed throughout the process, of progress, so I was in the loop. Kind and professional. Did good, solid work. Quick and clean as well. Would definitely recommend and have even given his info to our Realtor to pass along to her future clients!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

I have double hung windows (older home- 1921). Many do not function smoothly, several have broken glass/cracks and without screens. I would like an assessment of retaining them versus replacement. I also have a deck that I would like removed. The wood is in great shape but the deck is inappropriate for the space. Would like to talk about re-purposing the wood.
