After a bad experience with another contractor who failed to show for scheduled appointment Jacob performed the installation and removal of a water heater the same day I contacted him. He also did it for $400 less than what was quoted from the previous contractor, who was self described as the lowest price guaranteed. He was very courteous and professional and also helped me with another plumbing issue which was not part of the initial service call.

Dimitar from Euro Plumbing responded with a detailed quote in a timely manner. He was able to install the new hot water heater on a Sunday morning! He had to add an overflow thing a ma jig but only charged for the part not installation. He also updated the turnoff valves into the heater. He explained the operation of the new heater and removed the old, very heavy heater and cleaned up thoroughly. He also mounted a carbon monoxide alarm for free. Would definitely call for any plumbing issue again. This was a regular tank hot water heater, not tankless.

I had Tom come to my house and he gave me an assessment of my furnace ( no gas, pilot light could not be lit ). We are not rich people and so I had hoped that it could be fixed. Unfortunately, the part that needed to be replaced was very expensive ( $400-$450 ). My furnace is very old ( over 25 years old ). Tom quoted a price for a new furnace and it was reasonable. It was an unexpected cost but it had to be done. I'm 60 years old and sometimes in these situations, you wonder if you are being taken advantage of. After talking it over with Tom, I felt very comfortable that it was something that needed to be done. We made an appointment for the next available day that he and I were able to handle ( within a week )and he came and installed the new furnace. Tom was very professional and did an outstanding job. He answered all my questions to my satisfaction. I had a question about a noise I was getting from my Rinai tankless water heater and he said he would take a look at it. I didn't know this but he also installs hot water heaters AND tankless water heaters! He had an idea what the problem might be and after checking the system, he fixed it. It doesn't make the noise anymore and my wife and I are so happy. Not only that but he was nice enough not to charge us. When you're on a budget, this type of service is a God send. Also, I asked him if he knew of a plumber because next to my furnace ( that was in my crawl space ) was a terrible leak in one of my pipes. He recommended Pipecraft Plumbing, a small Mom and Pop ( just like Tom's )operation. Jacob, the owner came to my house and gave me a free estimate. Many companies come to your house and charge you for just coming down, neither Tom or Jacob, charge you for coming down and assess the problem. I also had problems with flooding in my crawlspace during the rainy times. He said it was my sump pump. The bottom line is that I had him fix all the problems and feel much more comfortable now. And, I forgot to mention that I had Jacob to look at my kitchen faucet because there was low pressure and he fixed that at no extra charge. I am so satisfied with Tom's service and recommendation of Jacob that I needed to express myself in this review. It's hard to find trustworthy people but I think I have found two of them. I highly recommend them! Thank you Tom and Jacob.

My 15 year old water heater died on a Sunday night and flooded part of the basement. I called Charlie at 9:00 PM that night and he was at my house with a new water heater the following morning. He and his son were very personable and did a great job installing the new water heater and getting rid of the old one. After they left, one of the connections was dripping and they came back immediately to repair it. Honest guys that take pride in their work.

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

Daniel and his team helped my wife and I transform a house built in 1906 into a modern masterpiece. They did an UNBELIEVABLE job at a very reasonable price. At first, I was a little hesitant to use them as one reviewer perviously gave them a wretched review, but I couldnt be happier with the end-results. They completely remodeled the basement, added 2 bathrooms, re-did another bathroom, dry walled multiple rooms, built an amazing egress window well, installed a water heater, sewer ejector pump, kitchenette, and laid tile/ flooring throughout the house. Separately, on a personal level Daniel and his crew are some of the nicest individuals you'll ever meet. IF YOU ARE EVER ON THE FENCE ABOUT USING DANIEL AND HIS CREW DONT BE....FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT ANY TIME AND ID BE HAPPY TO SHOW OFF HIS WORK. This certainly wont be the last time we use him. I found tons of black particles in our hot water. I called Sys-co and they were here in two hours for a free diagnostic assessment. Turns out my flex hoses on the water heater had to be replaced. The plumber came early he next morning, took off his boots when walking on carpet, and replaced the hoses with reliable cooper pipes to solve the problem. In and out in under an hour, including clean up. Quality workmanship, too. Very polite and professional young man. I have a new favorite plumber! Thank you!

As we prepare to list our house for sale, we needed a number of things done, including getting a new hot water heater. Rent A Services (named after owner Abimael Renta) saved the day! Abi, his wife Dina, and their son Cody run this great family business and can do almost anything you need them to. They removed my old water heater, installed the new one, and hauled away the old one for me. They even met me at Home Depot to advise picking out the new one. Meanwhile, self-described clean freak Dina cleaned my oven as well as my interior light fixtures, with help of Cody when they required a ladder. She also managed to remove some mysterious white marks from our kitchen table that I thought would never come off! Abi texted that night and the next morning to make sure the hot water heater was working properly. This family is honest, hard-working, and trustworthy. You won't regret hiring them for their professionalism, competence, and reasonable prices.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.
