Gerardo did drywall patching and painting for me in 2 bedrooms where we had to cut open the drywall to run wiring for ceiling fans. His price was the best of the quotes I received, and the work was done perfectly - you cannot tell where the patch was done! Will definitely use him for future projects.

Jose with JRA Drywall Services did an amazing job. We had a dining room that had two different wallpapers and a living room where the walls had ugly texture. We also had popcorn ceilings in both rooms. Jose took care of our ugly rooms and made them look new again with a smooth ceiling and wall finish! He worked very hard and came on time as promised. He was very diligent and super pleasant.

New Morning is the best contractor we have ever worked with. We hired them to paint our very large, very tall home and the quality of their work was outstanding. Usually when dealing with a contractor there is some stress involved, in dealing with New Morning there was zero stress. Everything they do from giving a quote, scheduling the job, performing the job and finally the billing is so well thought out and easy that we were amazed. Their pricing is very competitive, the crew was punctual, responsive and most importantly professional. If we could give them 10 stars we would!

Remodeled entire kitchen and 4 bathrooms as well as taking down a bedroom wall. What was so great about the whole experience was just dealing with one person for everything - electrical, gas, lighting, drywall, tile - the work was exceptional.

Trent is a straight shooter motivated by integrity. I had requested drywall repair for a 1.5' x 1.5' hole in the wall. When he gave me his estimate he thought it was for a 1.5"x1.5" hole. The job took a little over two hours instead of the quoted one, but Trent refused to let me pay him for the extra time or the materials he had to purchase because of the larger hole. He was extremely professional asking permission to use my sinks and let me know that his saw was going to be loud. He also cleaned up after himself and the work is top notch. I will look to hire Trent again for my future projects.

S&G was quick to respond and gave a good quote for drywalling and texturing my home. Unfortunately there was a bit of mis-communication regarding trash removal (I remember stating that there would be no dumpster present and that they would need to take care of all the trash). There also needed to be correction regarding what walls to texture which delayed the project by a day. Finally I was sad to find the crew left without cleaning up the drywall dust, leaving me figure out how to clean up all the drywall dust myself (hint, it's not easy and will ruin regular vacuums). They should have also been clear that it wouldn't be possible to stay in the house during drywall. My wife and I were living in the house for the whole renovation and intended to continue to do so, but once the drywall was brought in we couldn't move through the house due to the boards blocking hallways, The next day they shoved a bed frame that I was under the impression they were just going to tarp over into the room we were sleeping in making it impossible to get in and out (the bed frame was a custom built frame that's difficult to take apart, so they kept it all together). Overall the work was of good quality, but the communication could have been much better.

We had a leak in our upstairs bathroom that went down to the main level so we needed a bathroom remodel and new drywall and texture in our dinning room. They tile work was great and everything looked good when they had finished. I do wish there was better communication on when people were coming and going for the day.

Andrew has worked on two jobs for me, one with a painting company that did the interior of my house and the other as a private drywall repair. He was excellent in both circumstances: skilled, excellent work, professional attitude, and personally friendly. He is without a doubt the first person I will turn to when I need help again.

After looking for the right and affordable contractor for months, it can be a little frustrating but it was worth the wait. I found GALVAN remodeling LLC, they were very prompt at price, work and time frame. They worked on my entire basement from scratch to finish, all the plumbing, walls, floors, paint even door sizing. Their work was done fast, efficient, and very well organized. No middle man on contracting work. Very affordable, efficient and well done. Wait, seriously, go no further! Scot with prime handyman is who you want to hire! I’m telling you! I hired Scot just to paint the interior of my home, yet after a nightmare experience with a general contractor who left my home unfinished, Scot handled it all! He literally finished everything the other guy didn’t, basically became my new General Contractor to help me out, took over the whole project, got it all done in a timely manner, was there to consult as well as doing the work, didn’t even flinch when more work was needed to do to fix the other guys mistakes, then painted the place beautifully, and left my home better then how I imagined. This guys the real deal. Now and again you get an amazing find on thumbtack of someone you know you’ll always call from now on for work, Scot with Prime Handyman is it!! Truly great experience. He will impress you for sure!

Joe was very professional in the work he completed. He remodeled one of our bathrooms and did drywall work, as well. Not only did he go above and beyond with the actual work completed, he was very prompt, professional, and easy to communicate with. If I have any future jobs that need to be completed, I will make Joe my first call! I highly recommend him to anybody who needs remodeling done on their home!

Jim and his Crew do excellent work. We have been looking for contractors, builders, finishers and all kinds of people to hire to finish our basement, and we ended up going with Jim and Integrity Remodeling. Are we glad we did!! Jim does most all the work himself with his own employee which saved us on having to hire a contractor and pay them to hire out other companies to complete the job in pieces. With Jim and his employee, we knew who we were getting, he talked to us everyday and kept us up to date on the process, and is very easy to talk to. He gives great recommendations and sure does know what he is doing. I recommend him to anyone who is looking for a basement finish, remodel, service or anything of that nature. We plan to use him to help us with our upstairs remodel now!! Thanks Jim!!!

Randy did quality work quickly and at a very competitive price. I had 5 large holes in my drywall left from the previous owners in-wall speaker setup. He patched and textured it perfectly all in one morning. I would definitely hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
