Daniel and his crew did a fantastic job building our new front porch. This wasn't a project for an inexperienced contractor, as we had to fire one (due to lack of knowledge and technique) before we met with Gonzalez Construction LLC. Daniel and his team were on time, on budget, and followed the specific permit drawings which were approved. There is no doubt that we will be contacting them again on our upcoming projects. A reliable, truthful, professional, and experienced contractor is hard to find, believe me, save yourself the headache and go with them.

Wonderful experience - excellent work! First job was a big job installing tongue and groove in an overhanging porch. The work was very detailed & he did a BEAUTIFUL job! A few weeks later, I made a 5 page list of stuff that needed to be done around the house.....change a light swtich, fix 3 "sticky" doors, repair door jambs, fix scratches in wood trim, repair a broken endtable, caulk some windows, put up some window trim, repair a laundry shelf etc etc etc. Stuart knows how to do just about anything! He did a great job repairing the house. I am very happy with the work and will definitely use him again.

Installed some blinds on my front porch. I have tried for 2 years and numerous contractors, to get new screen doors for my dining room and bedroom. Michael never gave up and took the time and care to get the job done for me. I am thrilled and thankful for finding him.

Norm is very detail oriented, skilled and truly a “one stop” professional. We recently purchased a home built in 1994, he repaired and matched the trim on the exterior beautifully before he even started painting. He identified the best lines to enhance our home, and even skim coated the porch so that it was smooth and a beautiful entrance to our new home.

I found Alfredo Ferrera through your site when I was in need a trust worth and skilled wood floor refinisher. He did an incredible job, showed up promptly at 7:30 am every day and stay late to get the job done. Alfredo also refinished my stairs, bannister, and front porch- all for a very reasonable price for such a highly skilled person with some of the best equipment for the job. I highly recommend Alfredo for wood floors and around the house projects.

Matt did an excellent job on my porch! He had to blend the new with the old and did so brilliantly. Went way out of his way to tend to stufff in the way (landscape, sprinkler heads) and to top it all made a small step for the dog door. Great to work with, does all the work himself and stayed at estimate.

Owen and Brandon built redwood railing for the front and back porch, painted it to match the trim, poured a short concrete path from the back porch to the lawn and built stairs from the concrete to the back porch. They made a good first impression when, unable to make the appointment on time, called ahead of time and rescheduled it for later in the day! I like professionals that respect my time as well. The project was completed in four days and looks great! I would hire them again and refer them to friends. The carpenters are positive and easy to work with!

We had David replace 10 screens in our screened in porch. He showed up on time and was very professional and very easy to talk with. Very polite. We feel he did an outstanding job and completed everything in a very short time. If I had any questions he was glad to answer them and was glad to make any changes that I suggested along the way. We plan on having David do additional work for us in the near future and I would highly recommend him.

Uncle Brian’s Home Improvement in Thornton, Colorado has twice done renovation work in our home. Most recently, he’s completed remodeling an upstairs hall bathroom and a bedroom vanity’/sink. Two years ago he completely redesigned and rebuilt our kitchen by changing the layout of our cabinets, by moving a wall that needlessly hid empty space, and by opening the passage to our dining room. The two of us can now prepare dinner together, because we have space to move and counters to prepare meals. Brian went above and beyond what was expected by gently guiding us toward more contemporary styles yet still allowing for our somewhat old-fashioned tastes. With each and every kitchen and bathroom redo, he has jointly created home spaces unique for each customer. We know this because he invited us to see other homes, in which he has worked. We in turn enjoyed showing off our home. While his estimate was not the cheapest; his higher quality materials and workmanship compared well with more expensive contractors, yet was far from being the most costly. His rates were reasonable. Before Brian, we had company “x” do some work for us, but they gave us few choices and refused to adapt to our tastes or even allow us any changes with their “package deal.” Brian, on the other hand, collaborated with us to achieve our goals. First, he took us shopping to learn our tastes allowing for our budget. Whether working on our complete kitchen or overhauling our small bathrooms, he attended to details, such as insulating our bathroom floor and walls keeping my tub water warm longer and putting a plastic cover over my basement light switch, so we need not run up & down trying to figure out how to turn on the light! Also, he filled in the holes his electrician made in the wall and retextured them, too. He custom built matching bathroom mirrored medicine chests, too. More importantly, he found us bargains, whenever he could. Jen, Brian’s go getter, got us a European style adjustable height shower unit at reduced cost—perfect for our home. She also got us a good deal on an over-the-toilet cabinet to match our new comfort height counters. Brian recommended many inexpensive tile choices from which to choose. When we requested cross-reeded glass for our upper kitchen cabinets, he marvelously matched the square pattern with a glass backsplash that looked made-to-match, pleasing us greatly. Oh, he installed a new front entrance for us, too. Our new Feather River door was reasonably priced saving us money over other brands and giving us natural light in our entranceway. Everything looks great. With our kitchen and bathroom projects concluded, we are already on his waiting list to repair our front porch and perhaps replace our back door. Brian and his assistants, Aaron, Jeremiah, Dave and Jen were polite and attentive to our needs. Each day the men cleaned up their mess—a biggy. Our home now has one, complete and pleasing overall unity. We are repeat customers of Uncle Brian’s and heartily recommend his remodeling business to all Angie’s List subscribers in the North Metro Denver area! P.S. The side of his truck reads, “…like having an uncle in the business”—it’s true! Happy Holidays, Jen

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
