Daniel and his team helped my wife and I transform a house built in 1906 into a modern masterpiece. They did an UNBELIEVABLE job at a very reasonable price. At first, I was a little hesitant to use them as one reviewer perviously gave them a wretched review, but I couldnt be happier with the end-results. They completely remodeled the basement, added 2 bathrooms, re-did another bathroom, dry walled multiple rooms, built an amazing egress window well, installed a water heater, sewer ejector pump, kitchenette, and laid tile/ flooring throughout the house. Separately, on a personal level Daniel and his crew are some of the nicest individuals you'll ever meet. IF YOU ARE EVER ON THE FENCE ABOUT USING DANIEL AND HIS CREW DONT BE....FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT ANY TIME AND ID BE HAPPY TO SHOW OFF HIS WORK. This certainly wont be the last time we use him. Mark went beyond his duty. My water heater was still under warranty so the manufacturer shipped two different parts that should have repaired it. Mark replaced the parts and the water heater still did not work. Mark called the manufacturer and told them that they needed to replace the entire water heater. He then took the water heater back and got a new one and installed it. Finally, we had a working hot water heater! Thank you Mark for going beyond your job!!

Installed a tankless water heater in my crawl space and freed up an entire closet in my bathroom. Ran all new lines. Excellent job by the installation crew. I had other bids and these guys were better prices. I called for an estimate and they were able to come out within a hour and were available to do the job the same week. Would recommend to anyone.

Bob did a fantastic job patching up my old hot water heater and then installing the new one when it arrived. He was VERY knowledgeable and reasonably priced, his costs were almost half the price of the other quotes I received. He was very good at explaining every step along the way and was extremely personable and friendly. I highly recommend Bob, if you need a plumbing/heating/cooling guy... Bob is your man!

They arrived when they estimated it. I have maintenance done on my furnace every other year and I knew the igniter was getting close to being replaced. When they cleaned the furnace, I mean clean, taken apart, washed a couple of items that can be washed. They replaced the igniter, put it all back together again, is it SO clean. This was the best then what was done in the past. I mean they checked an area in the furnace, that if maintenance was not being done, it would show (can't remember the name of area). They complemented me for taking care and being diligent to the maintenance. They checked my water heater and some maintenance needed to be done, I saw what needed to be done. This was the first time my water heater was every checked!! I recommended it highly. Would I recommend this company, you bet! His bid was a little high, but after reading what was covered etc. I felt good about his description. I felt paying a little extra would be worth it, it was.

Alfredo did a great job with our laminate and tile floors. He ran into snags along the way with our plumbing (a toilet we removed flooded the bathroom and garage and a pipe going into our water heater was also dripping) but he was able to fix the plumbing issues for us as well as finish the floors. The tile in our laundry room looks great and he took the time to make sure it was done correctly! Will definitely hire him again!

I needed a water heater installed in a rental property that is a fair distance from where I live. From the get go Jesse was informative, helpful, and patient---I'm kind of a high maintenance client! I was not able to be there, so he picked up the water heater, took pictures as he was making progress, and met me halfway so I could pay him. He charged what he said he would and everything was yes ma'am, no problem ma'am, thank you ma'am. A true pleasure to work with! During conversation I discovered he has other skills that one who owns a rental property has need for. He will be first on my list to call for any project I need done!

Called at 10:00 when I found water heater leaking. Said they could be out later the same day. Worked with Steve to determine which water heater I would like installed. Steve told me that it would be late this day before they could show up. Crew showed up at 6:00, removed leaking water heater (tank had sprung leak), carried new one to basement, unpackaged, installed new piping, put drain pan under water heater, mounted water heater in place. After testing, Travis (co-owner and tech) trained me on proper lighting, water temperatures, understanding the displaying LED's and setting for vacation mode. We ended up getting a really nice Rheem water heater with a great warranty and a very good price! Thanks for getting us taken care of in one day!!' Would not hesitate to use Altitude Comfort in the future! PS: got a call later the same night from Steve just to make sure all went smoothly

From the upfront discussions about the products to install and the discussion around how to get those installed, Tom and his team did a fantastic job in setting up our new HVAC system and water heater. It's obvious that Tom understand that his clients ARE his business and he caters to their needs and makes them understand the entire process. Not only that, but the price and the quality of products are more than fair! We have a complete Trane HVAC system with ultra high-efficiency features and a new 50 gallon water heater, which will last us for years to come. We highly recommend Tom and his team to do any new install or service. Looking forward to having these guys back to service the system down the road.

Ray is awesome! He has done an amazing job on our house- we had a water heater leak and create a giant insurance nightmare, and Ray has been patient with us, prompt with estimates, and honest with pricing. He's done a GREAT job on everything so far. This project has been delayed numerous times because of insurance stuff, and he's been very accommodating with our schedule. He's easy to get a hold of, always on time, super chill about me asking him a million questions, and the work is stellar. If you want work that's done right, and done on time, and someone you can count on, I would hire Old School, Inc. If we ever have anything we need done on our house in the future, we will be calling them again, for sure! Thank you Ray!!! You are wonderful!

Steve did an excellent job installing my 50 gallon Rheme hot water heater. He arrived right on time, he was very professional, and he did great work. It took about 2 hours for the install and he gave me the lowest price out of all the other offers. Overall I am very happy with the experience. The hot water heater works great and I will consider hiring him for air conditioning, furnace service, and hot water heater maintenance in the future.

This is your next go to company. I needed a tank-less water heater and they gave me a great price, so I hired them and have no bad things to say. They came to the house looking professional and not like they were from some back alley. They got the job done quick, looks / works awesome, and it’s like they were never here except for the new equipment. Very Happy Customer!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.
