We had a leak in our upstairs bathroom that went down to the main level so we needed a bathroom remodel and new drywall and texture in our dinning room. They tile work was great and everything looked good when they had finished. I do wish there was better communication on when people were coming and going for the day.

My experience with Donna was extraordinary. Her competence and integrity are unsurpassed. I've never worked with a designer before and I couldn't have been more fortunate to work with her. She listens, and explained everything. There were no surprises other than complete satisfaction. If you're looking for a designer, look no further!

Ashley was referred to me by a friend in my building (The Glass House, Riverfront Park) and after meeting her I knew that she would be able to carry out my vision of helping me redesign my condo to reflect my love of travel. I did not have a large budget, but my place is small, however it was an ample amount to change the look and feel. With Ashley's advice and guidance, I got a lot of bang for my buck. She helped me select new bedding, bathroom goods, lighting, décor, upholstery, paint and art as well as showed me how I could re-work most of my existing furniture to get a whole new look. For example, I love my dining table (and it fits perfectly in my small space) so we just swapped out the dining chairs, added paint and framed some existing paintings from a trip to India. The space was given a whole new feel. In my bathroom, I did not want to spend much,l but the space certainly needed a whole new look. Ashley was able to help me maximize my budget with discounted home stores to create a look that was bright, eclectic and fresh. The best part was that we used only re purposed art. Ashley was flexible with meeting times, generous in her communication and I really felt that she steered me well - pushing me to spend where it mattered and showing me where I could be smart and stretch my budget. She was timely, professional and the quality of her ideas are top notch. The best part of all is the eclectic, worldly feel of the design that inspires me each time I step inside.

Jen and Jessica exceeded all of my expectations. I moved into a new home and was overwhelmed with my ideas of what I wanted and how to even begin to start. Jen worked with me and we took it room by room. She understood what I wanted and incorporated my existing furniture. She understood that I needed this to be budget friendly and offered me options that looked high end. Jsquared is very connected and their sub contractors are easy to work with, affordable and professional. I think that it also important to note that they are timely. I have worked with other designers and I was the one that had to bug them to move the project along. There is nothing worse than having you home incomplete for months. With Jsquared, they kept the timeline and and stuck to it. In some cases, visions came to life in days, not weeks. I love my home. It is everything I imagined and more. I would recommend them for any scope of work. They have the experience, vision, and passion to make their clients very happy.

Lisa Demberg is truly a gem. We hired her to help us design our home which we were renovating in oldtown ft collins. She far exceeded our expectations for what our home could be on a very limited budget. She chose colors, fixtures, furniture, assisted with remodel and design of kitchen, bathrooms, living room, and even helped with where to placement. Her professionalism, respect for budget and ability to work well with a team under high stress time deadlines with great attention to detail were all very much appreciated. Most of all, she exudes amazing confidence and has an incredible talent for design which simply put me at great ease and instilled ongoing trust. It was a joy to work with her and I highly recommend her!

Mr. Lefcourt was very easy to work with on our tricky bathroom remodel in a 115+yr old home. He had a good intuition for our priorities as far as budget, magnitude of change we wanted, and general feel of the result we desired. He worked efficiently and finished the job in less time than anticipated. Other individuals we got quotes from threw wild ideas at us that would have been far beyond our budget and time allotment; Richard worked respectfully within our comfort zone, and came in ahead of schedule and under budget. It doesn't get much better.

I should be writing this review when I can include photos, but maybe I can update it once some of the Maryann magic has happened. I decided to go ahead however and let everyone know how flexible, responsive and talented she is! Maryann is helping us with our new townhome and the first phase is paint. Maryann picked fabulous colors and referred me to a terrific painter. The second phase will be help with furniture layout and furniture recommendations to achieve the look I want. I keep vacillating between purchasing a package that Maryann can put together or having her help me by the hour, and Maryann has been so understanding. Maryann has my highest recommendation and I'll update with photos soon! Fabulous person and designer!

Jim did a complete bathroom remodel for us in just over one week. We are very pleased with how it turned out. He takes the time to find out what exactly you want and he'll do everything to make sure you get it and for a reasonable price. He makes sure the job gets done right and has great attention to detail. Jim really cares about people and wants them to be happy with the work. I would highly recommend him to anyone! Great guy, and he does awesome work! Thanks Jim

I couldn't have asked for a better person for the job! After texting Diana, she responded immediately, inviting me to call her to express my needs. She truly listened to my initial thinking and concerns with my DIY planned kitchen design. She then consulted me on some choices and helped me understand why certain items/color schemes work together and others don't. I can use the knowledge I have gained from working with her on this project to DIY projects in other areas of my home. She was professional & knowledgeable about all the nuisances of design that I did not initially consider. I highly recommend Diana as she is a great listener, possess a wealth of knowledge and offered me practical solutions. Thank you Diana!

Truly have had the best experience with UNUM. They were excited about our project, but never pushy about design elements or aesthetic. We felt genuinely valued as clients as Jim and Adam would often go above and beyond to design the space we saw in our wildest dreams. Their renderings are spectacular, and they are always prepared with the proper drawings and advice. They are always on time, easy to work with, and meetings are always comfortable. There's no question too small or silly to ask them, and they will always take the time to explain each detail. Highly recommend working with them!

It was a pleasure working with Vicki. I had ordered an oversized custom hooked rug from her. I didn’t want my decor to over shadow it so chose to let Vicki handle the whole project. I was thrilled with the result.

We have a great room that I find very difficult to section and decorate. I was thrilled to find Natalie as she was able to help really define and simplify the room. I love that she used much of what we already had, but also added just he right details to make the room feel cozy and inviting. She offered many great ideas and options, both in person and online, never making me feel awkward when I didn't like something she suggested. I have already recommended Natalie to a friend. I would encourage anyone to work with her to just "freshen up" a room or even if starting from scratch.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
