My dog Lilly and I started in September with Dion. Each class was a learning experience. I am very pleased to say Lilly (golden-doodle) is a well mannered dog on leash and when people come over. Its a commitment for you and the dog. Real time training (park setting) is great as you and the dog experience the squirrels, other dogs, people and the every day sounds. As the issue of either the owner or the dog or both (LOL) arose Dion would correct you/dog. Dion is very accommodating. I reviewed all the dog trainers I could find. And am So pleased to have been able to choose the Right trainer for us. We can walk without issue. When Lilly wants to act up I (the leader) now know what I need to do. Thanks Dion for your dedication to better living of dog and human.

I needed to find a trainer that understood my dog breed. When I saw his two dogs on his website I knew he was the person I needed to intercede. Pete had done a remarkable turn around of my dog, Turk's "fear aggression" behavior and I will give Peter 5 stars!!!

We love Kay and are so happy to have her working with us on puppy training. She is full of helpful ideas and has been instrumental in teaching each of us (3 teenagers included) how to best train and get the results we are looking for. Each session she brings new information and tools to train with and our puppy just loves her. We are so grateful to have her with us on this journey!

Chris knows his stuff! If you need help with training your dog he's the one to go to! We had our pup stay with Chris and when he came back to our house he was a model dog! It was pretty amazing that what Chris taught him didn't go away when he left Chris' home - it stuck with our pup back at our house. We definitely recommend Chris!

Training my dog is still a work in progress, however my experience with Claire and Backcounty Buddies has been amazing. My dog is terrible. Terrible. Never once did I feel like I'd done something wrong by being the owner of a true monster dog. Everything feels like it's do-able!

I met Alex Canby the second week I moved to Boulder. We immediately connected when I showed him the picture of Gus, my Great Dane (I have to show everybody his picture). Alex then told me he was a therapy and behavioral dog trainer. I was immediately interested in hearing more as I have always wanted Gus to be a therapy dog, but, more importantly, Gus hadn’t made the move yet, and I was concerned how he would adjust. Alex offered me his contact information in case Gus had any issues adjusting. I am a student at CU Boulder and was heading out for my first day of classes. Gus was nervous in his new environment, and being a Great Dane, he was able to convince me with his size to miss all of my classes and stay with him. Gus literally held on to me as I tried to leave. When I finally left, he tried jumping through the window and attempted breaking through the door of my apartment. I had no choice but to email my professors and say I would not be attending class. For the rest of the week, I took Gus to daycare, but the costs were adding up. I contacted Alex, who offered me some great tips on how to make Gus more comfortable. I was surprised to see how quickly I saw results. I even told Alex he should charge more based on the quick and effective results. It was certainly less expensive than daycare, and Gus was actually learning to be a better dog. Since then, I have stayed in contact with Alex for Gus's random behavioral issues. Alex always has an answer and helps me correct the issues right away. In addition, as time permits, I have anticipations to work with Alex to pursue Gus as a therapy dog. I have already recommended him to many and will continue to do so. Emily Morrison Boulder, CO

Chris is an amazing trainer. I thought my dog wouldn't be able to learn anything but Chris assured me that he would be workable. 5 weeks later I have seen a huge improvement in Jaxx. Chris is always there to help you when you have a question whenever you have one, and his schedule is very flexible as well. I will continue to work with Chris for awhile until I am able to get the perfect service dog.

Scott is an amazing dog trainer! I didn't think my dog could be trained but after only one session she started to calm down and obey commands. He worked with her on her aggression towards guests coming into our home as well as obeying simple commands. Maddie, my dog, is still doing good even after the training! I'm so grateful for Scott helping us!

Our Thumtack contact was a very knowledgeable and confident trainer names Andi Nault. She was not dissuaded by my very active Rhodesian Ridgeback who loves people and any dog withing eye view. She worked patiently with us, gave us some new tools to use with Penny and lots of encouragement. She offered doggy daycare which I thought might be useful and it was. Penny learned to read the cues of the other dogs that didn't want to roughhouse. Andi was very good with Penny, consistent, confident, reassuring and had other options to offer us if we wanted them but no pressure. She recommended Boarding facilities we had no knowledge of, other trainers, behavioral specialists, hour long dogie play time, etc. I highly recommend Andi Nault for whatever dog behavior you want to address.

I have had the pleasure of working with Lea for years and she's always been beyond excellent with dogs and all animals! She's loving, patient, and has such a strong concern for animal welfare. I feel confident that my dogs are in the best hands and receiving the best care when with her. You can definitely be confident that your pets will truly receive the best, most loving care as she treats them all as if they are her furbabies as well.

Helena was an amazing dog trainer both for our rescue dog Woodrow, and for us. Her training was multi-faceted in that she trained us as much as she trained our dog. Woodrow is a rescue, and we called Helena after he developed a rather nasty biting habit. We were desperate to get help immediately, and unlike other companies in the area, Helena called us back immediately, and like us, took the issue of our aggressive dog very seriously. When other companies believed that it was "just a phase" or that a muzzle or a shock collar would be the best course of action, Helena respectfully disagreed. She proved that aggressive dogs can and will respond well to positive reinforcement and behavior modification through intense but rewarding training techniques. When we "interviewed" Helena, she met us at our house for a 90-minute consultation. She provided us with printed handouts on aggression as well as some initial training techniques to begin. We decided to go with her, which was a life-changing decision for our dog; Woodrow has improved drastically since Helena has worked with him. When we first had Woodrow, he could not be within 20 feet of a stranger without barking or growling, and now, his "bubble" has been greatly reduced. During our 8-weeks with Helena, we worked on a doorbell training routine, practiced how to be around other dogs on walks, learned what to do if a stranger approaches us on a walk, how to manage off-leash dogs, and even how to navigate when someone hugs me (he is protective, too!). She came to our house/nearby park always, which was so important as my husband and I both work full time. She was flexible with our schedules and made herself available based on our availability. Finally, her rates are very manageable and fair. It's easy to see that Helena is not concerned with gouging our paychecks for her noteworthy service--she simply wants to see dogs improve. It's refreshing! With Helena you get a true professional who will put your dog at the forefront of her practice. Without Helena, we were ready to give up on our sweet boy, but now, we have renewed hope that he can he rehabilitated for good. Thanks Helena and Training House Calls for being exactly what we needed to save our dog. Best decision ever :)

Victoria with Furever Behavior Dog Training is a wonderful trainer. Our dog was a rescue who had lived on the streets and he had many issues. Our dog guarded his food and toys, did not know basic obedience or manners, was not housebroken, did not know to come when called, did not know how to walk on a leash without pulling my arm off, did not know about or like his crate and more. After working with Victoria, we learned how to give our dog the cues he needed to get the behaviors we all wanted. He quickly learned to love his crate as his safe and special place, housebreaking was rapid and our dog learned to trust us. Victoria gave us the tools and skills we needed to be good dog owners and our dog responded positively and swiftly to Victoria's techniques. And, speaking of positive, Victoria only uses positive training methods -- no punishment. And our dog loved, loved, loved Victoria. Well done!

My Aussie is a happy, healthy eight year old, but he was always really difficult to take for a walk. He just didn't respond to the leash, no matter the collar or the trainer, and I'd tried several of each. I would come home from what should have been a pleasant walk in tears. Then I found Rick. Now long walks with Rolly are a blessing for us both, and his obedience training has made living with my active guy much easier and more fun. I am sooooo grateful. I've also watched Rick with other dogs. He is a master of his craft. Big, little, tough or timid, he knows how to help them and how to help you, so your bond and time together become more fun and rewarding.

About

I love dogs and helping people. These are my top two favorite things in a part-time hobby. Sign me up! I've never lived in a house without at least three dogs, sometimes as high as six or seven. So, there isn't much that I can't handle. Why I want to sit? I work for myself from home. I have loads of time on my hands, and I already take care of my dogs. They love it when we have company! Whether I come to your place or they come to mine, your dogs will get the best of care and attention. I may even do some training with them!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
