I started training with Dana recently and have definitely seen results! She designed a nutrition program for me that has improved my diet and given me more energy, and has helped improve my flexibility and strength by teaching me several exercises that I can also do on my own. She is an easy going person, but pushes me at the same time. I recommend Dana to anyone who wants to get into better shape, improve their strength and flexibility, meet their goals, and enjoy working out at the same time! Ken G.

sha Shanon was the only one that really gave me a quick overview about belly fat that I mentioned was a problem. He talked about nutrition as well as the exercise program and hormones that captured my attention. Did an outstanding job in explaining how it all goes together.

Christina visited our work site to present an hour long nutrition session. From the beginning, she was very responsive and incredibly professional. The employees who attended the session all said they walked away with valuable information and asked to have her back for more presentations. We will absolutely be working with her again!

Ruthie has counseled me in women’s health for a little over a year now and all I can say is thank you! I only wish I had all the information she has provided me earlier in my life. She has helped me understand my cycle, identify when things aren’t in alignment with my body, and I now make more conscious decisions when it comes to the food I am eating. If you are looking for some guidance in anything related to woman’s health and nutrition I highly recommend reaching out to Ruthie B Lightner!

My husband and I turned to Dr. Sasha Houseman after two emergency room visits concerning our 11 year old son. On both occasions, our son had been complaining of severe stomach pain and his regular pediatrician recommended we take him straight to the hospital for fear of an appendicitis. After many hours and several tests, we went home both times with a diagnosis of... constipation! During the hospital discharge, we knew the general handouts provided on eating more fruits and vegetables just wasn't enough because it's not easy to get a preteen to listen to his parents. This is when we reached out for expert advice. Dr. Houseman interviewed both my husband and I about our family's meal planning. She also patiently talked with our son about his interests, physical activity, sleeping habits and the foods he most liked to eat. Her practical solutions for better nutrition were, indeed, easy to act upon and her recommendations are making a difference in our son's overall health. Kristin W.

Kaitlyn was a wonder to work with. She is easy to talk to and well educated on the subject with incredible insight. I have had arthritis most of my life and she was able to pinpoint ways I can improve my overall health and comfort through nutrition. I am also a vegetarian and she tailored my experience to match. I can not recommend her enough!

I love working with Sara! As someone who's a "little older" I appreciate her attention to making sure my workout is not only effective, but safe. She's been able to not just work around my physical limitations but improve them! She obviously has a lot of experience and passion for what she does. She also has a no nonsense approach when it comes to nutrition and helping me with my diet.

Kat Bartell is the perfect blend of spunk, passion, comfort and inspiration. Her classes keep me challenged as well as motivated to grow physically and mentally. I love how she incorporates her knowledge of yoga, Pilates, nutrition, massage and multiple other talents into creating an experience that is about a lifestyle. You don't take a Kat Bartell class to get a workout. You take a Kat Bartell class to expand what is possible in life!

Amanda has been a tremendously positive and friendly guide in the evolution of my eating and nutrition habits. From our first meeting to discuss my goals and my general overall health, Amanda has been knowledgeable, understanding, gentle and flexible. She understands that there is not one “plan” which works for everyone. Her approach is not to make up rules and give you a list of restrictions, but to gently guide you into working better nutrition and sustainable habits into your lifestyle. Each step of the way Amanda encouraged my efforts and applauded my creativity and sensitively helped me when I got stuck. Throughout the seven months of consultation with Amanda, I definitely feel her approach and her flexible inclusive programs are excellent value and offer plans for getting started and for maintaining the coaching and accountability.

I have worked with Rachel for several months and presented her with a wide range of goals and she'e helped me meet and surpass all of them. Rachel has provided me nutritional support in triathlon training, surgery recovery, and overall weight loss. Every time we've met, she has been incredibly thorough, explaining how I can maximize nutrition through food but has also offered supplements--without pressure--to support whatever goal I've been trying to meet. She has always provided a comprehensive plan, taking into account not only my immediate goal but also my thyroid issues, autoimmune issues, training goals, psychological stressors, etc. Rachel is someone that I will continue to work with and would recommend to anyone who is looking to live a healthier life style!

Kelsey is absolutely amazing! She knows how to adjust to each unique need. In my case I had to gain weight to not be hospitalized and so far I'm up 14 pounds. She has been able to direct me exactly as my nutrition needs and exercises as well. I highly recommend her to everyone that asks about my fitness journey.

Ashley put together the perfect nutrition program for me/my lifestyle! Her coaching and program was not at all the typical 'diet' which I at first was worried about. Instead she took the time to figure out what was realistic for me - and I've been able to follow the plans and keep the weight off! I also feel like i have a coach to check in with as I have questions - she is personable and cool too, always a bonus.

I have been receiving massage therapy from Talitha & Dan for almost 20 years and highly recommend them both! I am a fairly athletic person and utilize massage to keep my muscles more flexible and loose to help prevent injuries and for help in recovery if I have an injury. I also use it for stress relief and relaxation. They are good at attending to what is problematic. They do a very muscle specific type of massage which I find especially effective in relieving pain, keeping me moving and helping with my stress level. They have also worked on other members of my family who love their work as well. They have shown me movement therapy that has improved my flexibility and also given our family lots of tips to keep us healthy. I know you'll find their work & nutritional expertise highly satisfactory!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
