I verified that they were licensed and carried insurance. Paul's quote was easily lower than the other two I received. He was prompt and helpful. He quoted the basic job and offered extras. We opted to just go with the basic tree removal, and with no pressure or complaint, Paul did an amazing job.

Roger came out on a Monday, he provided a quote for tree removal, we negotiated a bit and he quoted a price was reasonable and fair for the both of us. He and his crew came on the next day and completed most of the work by the end of the day. Based on the level of care and quality Roger and his crew provided, I increased the scope of work and we negotiated a new price. On Wednesday Roger and crew came back to finish the job. The trees were cut into 2ft rounds and stacked at my request. This is my first time hiring a tree service and I am very impressed with Roger's attention to detail, safety and quality of clean-up. I highly recommend Roger Escobar!

Mario provided tree removal for me, taking out a large tree in the front yard, a large pine, a large maple, and about 16 other small and medium sized trees from the backyard all at a very reasonable and competitive price. Mario and his team were true professionals, on time, worked safe and took care not to damage any structures or utilities as they worked. They cleared up and hauled away all the debris as requested. We didn't have Mario grind our stumps to keeps costs down considering the number of trees removed but will call Mario next season to come back to grind out the stumps. I will definitely call Mario back to prune our remaining large pine in our front yard and for any new trees we plant, including other landscape work we may need in the future. Thank you Mario!

I hired the guys from complimentree Colorado to do a very large and pretty scary looking tree removal recently. These guys did such an incredible job, half the tree was over my house and they got it down no problem with no damage. Not only that but they gave me a great price. I'd gladly recommend them to anyone.

I had an urgent tree removal and they were not only the fastest responding company, but they completed the project the same day. I wasn’t even able to meet them at the job, but they provided pictures and clearly communicated with me throughout the entire process. This was a great experience!

Hunter did a great job. He moved a lot of River rock to another location in the yard and replaced it with blue recycled tire mulch. He had to remove a cement fountain and heavy wagon in order to lay the mulch and then move them again when he was finished. He picked up the weed barrier on his way to my home. He is very professional, punctual and his prices are more than fair.

Scott is professional and dependable. He has done a few jobs for us--pruning, planting, and removing. He evaluated the health of our trees and advised us about what we could expect. He took out one tree that was mostly dead and planted a new one in its place. He took out another tree that had been damaged in a late snowfall. We talked with him about trying to save it, and he felt the chances of it making it were small, which is consistent with what others had told us. On the jobs involving pruning or tree removal, he cleaned up, leaving us with no mess. We were very happy with his work.

I am extremely happy with James & Jim Tree Service who did an excellent job for me on a very difficult tree trimming task. James & Jim Tree Service provided high quality work and service done professionally, safely and at a reasonable cost. I have a large tree at the back of my garage that required large limbs overhanging the garage to be removed. James & Jim Tree Service performed the challenging job in workmanlike manner and the tree now looks great. I would recommend James & Jim Tree Service for any tree care work you might need to have done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
