Forest and his team are fantastic. They tiled, trimmed and installed all the flooring for a new house I built. I originally hired them just to tile but after it was clear that I couldn't lay the flooring myself, Forest's team stepped in to help. Then I lost my trim crew due to timing issues and, again, Forest and his team stepped in to do the job. Forest has fantastic ideas for design and functional use of space and his crew can implement them all! They're way ahead of schedule - I can't believe how quickly they work - and Forest's pricing is very competitive. I'm looking forward to working with Forest and his team in the future!

Steve at Mountain Top Construction saved the day. I've never filed an insurance claim and was apprehensive about doing so. Steve walked me through the process step by step as well as ensuring me how smoothly the renovations would be. It took a couple of weeks start to finish, but now my home has a new roof, new paint, gutters and a new window. I did not spend one penny out of pocket and every time I pull in my driveway, there is no question my home has gone up in value. I have referred him to several of my friends who had similar results much less the referral fee he gave me for each one! Thank you Thumbtack for putting me in contact with Steve.

We are new home owners and thought something was wrong with our boiler and requested professionals to hire through Thumbtack. Paul was the first person to respond - sending both a detailed message about his qualifications, pricing, etc as well as calling moments later. He was extremely helpful! He took the time to look at our boiler and help us better understand our equipment and addressed solutions to our problem all over the phone. He said we could easily fix the problem - saving us money, time, as well as providing us with invaluable information. Most people do not take the time to help customers the way Paul did. Not to mention, most people would have taken advantage of us and the situation to make money. His honesty, advice and patience was noteworthy and we will definitely keep his contact information for any future problems that may arise. He is very knowledgeable and we would recommend him to anyone looking for an honest professional.

Simply put, I consider Don with Zigler Building Systems an Excellent General Contractor and a man of integrity… “That will handle everything and get it done.” Period. Without wasting any extra time or money. I have also been in the construction industry for a great many years. I know the drill well and understand the process. Don has a passion for attention to detail and an excellent sense of high quality workmanship. My project was substantial covering many weeks. A basement re-construction project which required all aspects of construction. I spoke with Don about the overall plan and my thoughts and considerations, he then went to work. Handling any/all day to day decisions by himself, without the need to consult with me. This was perfect as I placed my complete trust in Don and he completely delivered. I felt completely comfortable with Don in our home. I HIGHLY recommend Zigler Building Systems for ANY construction project. Consider it handled!

Fran built our house from start to finish. We still have the basement to finish. It is a rather large house. The quality of the work was excellent. He custom built our home and we love it. He had a lot of very good suggestions. He and his crew were always polite, friendly and cooperative. They were good and courteous to one another. We were around them for approximately six months or more. The things we had trouble with were the work seemed to have taken longer as there would be days when there was no one doing anything. We understand that we were not his only clients and he had to manage the crews. We were always around, which in talking with other people who have had their houses built, most builders do not want or allow. We have a few things which still need to be finished. I feel Fran will do them but it is difficult to work around. The other thing is that I felt, then and now, that if the premises were kept more clean with less clutter they would be able to work more easily. As it was. one group doing staining left. some rags in a pile. When they caught fire there was a lot of damage with the smoke. I will say that they got busy and cleaned the walls redid the painting, repaired the damage and concentrated on getting rid of the smoke smell which was quite extensive. All in all I would recommend having Fran do the work.because in the end the quality is there

Scott and company were able to remove and replace cabinets in my home, modify my countertop, and allow me to install a larger refrigerator in my kitchen. In addition, I had a bay window that needed to be custom fit. They dealt with both projects quickly and with great professionalism. I will call on them in the future.

We had a two bed house that needed a complete remodel. He painted the walls and the ceilings in about 2 hours. There wasn't a single bare spot throughout the house. Ray did some repairs to the toilet that 4 other contractors couldn't fix. The toilet is completely fixed now. He completed some sub-floor repairs and trimwork on several windows and doors that look GREAT. He's fast and thorough. Really great guy to be around, too. VERY impressed!

I can recommend Frameworks Timber without any reservations. Not only are they true artisans who craft custom timber frames by hand, they are also great designers who build houses for the people who are going to live in them. Great communication. They do what they say they will do. Top Notch all the way.

Greene Enterprises conducted a total remodel of our home including concept, suggestions for design, and assistance with product selection. Greene Enterprises is a full-service company. Most of the trades are handled by the company and when they could not carry out a portion of the project, sub-contractors were selected and were availabe on short notice in order to keep the project moving along smoothly. As anyone who has gone through a remodel can attest, it is not an easy course of action. The individuals associated with Greene Enterprises took care in their work, adjusted to our changing demands, and made the experience much more tolerable. The craftsmen of Greene Enterprises are talented, meticulous, and treated our project as if it were their own. We cannot say enough about how satisfied we are with the outcome. We highly recommend this company and will definitely use them again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
