I appreciated very much that Tim came out for a maintenance check of my A/C, put refrigerant in it, and did not try to tell me that other things were wrong with it. It was a very fair price too! It's hard to find reliable, trustworthy, honest service technicians and I was so encouraged by my experience with Tim. He provided a full written report of the status of my A/C unit, took down Lennox model numbers of A/C and furnace so that if I have a problem I may be able to call and Tim will know what the problem is. He will be able to bring out the right part, saving invaluable time in a heating emergency in the winter. I plan to ask Tim to come out in the fall and perform the maintenance check on my furnace. I will recommend him to friends and anyone who asks.

Premium Duct Cleaners came out to our house last Monday and they did an excellent job. First, Brandon explained to me the entire process and offered various options. He and his technician performed a very thorough cleaning of our ducts, vents, the furnace and the air conditioning system. After that they have made a safe antimicrobial sanitizing of the entire duct system. Certainly, it made a tremendous difference. Overall, I was very impressed by their professionalism, reliability, hard work, and honesty. Their charges were definitely affordable. No doubts, we will use services of Premium Duct Cleaners again, and we highly recommend them to others.

After a bad experience where my air conditioning unit exploded after a technician came out for a simple repair (to replace the contactor), Alex came out to look at my A/C unit free of charge. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. I have spoken with several technicians and a few came to my house in the last week or so. I felt Alex was by far the most knowledgeable and I also felt he was honest, had integrity, was someone I could trust. Thanks again Alex!

Great working with the scheduler. Very easy conversation. When the technician arrived, spoke in very easy terms to help me understand what was going on and why. Sticker shock, but the furnace is much MUCH quieter. It seemed like the left hand wasn't talking to the right hand as I kept getting called by two different people to schedule, verify, or inform of the technicians imminent arrival. I appreciate the courtesy call that they would be arriving within a certain period of time. They did not arrive at the time they said they would over the phone, but still within the window that was originally scheduled.

I must say, I never write reviews. However, these guys were outstanding!! I couldn't be happier with my decision to use topdawg. Eric and his team were easy to work with and took care of all my needs. They left my house cleaner (literally) than before they got here. I admire Eric's passion for his work and it shows with his service and attention to detail. His team was respectful, easy to talk to and had high spirits while doing my job; a considerably hard job (and HOT). Stop looking for HVAC services, this is the right choice.

Technicians were knowledgeable and professional. I would say, in general, these type of companies know you are desperate to have the heat back on so they overcharge as much as they can. The good thing with this company is that they did not try to replace parts that were still fine. Other companies did.

Everyone at All Seasons, from the office staff to the installers were professional, kind and responsive. The installation went great, the installers cleaned up after themselves and walked me through each step of the process. The office staff were helpful when I had questions after the installation and took extra steps to ensure I was satisfied. I can't rate them highly enough and will certainly use their services again.

Extremely thorough and a job well done. Don was very friendly and upfront about everything that needed to be done. The price included a basic inspection, cleaning and change of the filter. I would definitely hire him again for service of my HVAC or my air conditioner.

Boris, the technician, was awesome. He walked me through every step of the process, and even took "before" and "after" videos. He was very thorough, and couldn't have been happier. Was a bit unnerved when there were additional charges presented at the beginning of the service raising the price. However, Boris was awesome.

Rich gave us a very reasonable quote for a new AC unit installation. He was responsive, prompt and professional. His technician that came out to do the installation did a good job. He warned us that there seemed to not be enough coolant and what to look for. When that proved true and we contacted Rich that evening he promptly scheduled the tech to come back out the next morning. Overall we are very happy with them and would not hesitate to hire them again.

Out of 4 highly rated HVAC guys from Thumbtack who came to my house to give me an estimate, Will was the only person to actually get back to me. He was upfront about everything, was diligent with taking pictures and measurements and was knowledgeable about the process. Will and his workers showed up on time and were clean, polite and spoke perfect English. He was also able to provide insurance information very quickly when I requested it. The worksite was spotless when they left and they took pictures of all the hidden work done in our attic so we could see their finished work. No surprise costs at the end, and they finished faster than expected. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to get HVAC work done.

Steve was awesome! What a great experience. Not only was Steve fast with his response, he gave great explanations of what needed to be done and examples of why he proposed what he offered. His pricing was in line with other competitors but what sold me is his prompt responsiveness & professionalism. Additionally, I noticed Steve is just getting started and trying to establish his new business. I fully support new local upstarts and he goes the extra mile to make sure you're happy with his service and completed product. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND STEVE TO ANYONE NEEDING HVAC SERVICE. I plan to use him for my 2nd unit tune up and will recommend him to anyone I know who asks.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
