Introduction: I'm a pianist, and I teach all genres of music including jazz, classical, pop, rock, world music, folk, etc. I also teach improvisation, chords and music theory, and songwriting. You can hear me play and read reviews on my website: I change up the activities about every 10 minutes, so kids never get bored! I also teach ESL for business and everyday life for all ages. I cover pronunciation, vocabulary, slang, idioms, reading and writing, using the phone, talking in meetings and to clients and teachers, office humor, and more. I also teach the TOEFL test. On the tutoring side, I solve individual problems of all kinds for all grades and subjects including Reading, Writing, Math, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, and I teach SAT/ACT prep. I love learning, and want everyone to enjoy learning! I like that my work can help turn a person around. When they solve their learning problems, the jewel that's inside really shines. It changes their lives. I also love to study and research, and I do extensive research for each one of my students. I don't want to miss any new technique that may help one person or another. Each person learns differently, and I learn a lot from that experience. My classes are one hour classes.

My daughter has taken piano with Debi for four years and worked with her on various subjects including math, reading comprehension and retention. I can't recommend her highly enough! Debi is a very skilled instructor who has a knack for teaching to each individual student in a way that brings out the best in them. Subjects are taught with humor and fun and activities are switched frequently so lessons aren't dull or arduous. I feel that Debi really focuses on and understands my daughter and her individual learning style. It has made a big difference in my daughter's confidence in her school work. Now she excels in subjects she used to say she was "bad" at.

My son was on a waiting list for a year for piano lessons with Debi Stevenson. We were just about to look for another teacher when we finally got the call, and we know now how lucky we are we waited. He's excelled far beyond our expectations, loving it from day one. Debi holds the perfect characteristics for a teacher: gracious and kind; talented and inspiring. She motivates her kids through many creative means, keeping them excited during lessons and assigning challenging, kid-focused projects that keep them inspired all year long. My son practices on his own, never having to be told. Debi provided him a foundation for learning and a love of music that has already -- in just two years -- moved him on to other instruments and to composing music on his own. She's a great teacher.

Debi is an amazing teacher who is great with keeping our kids inspired to play piano. She is creative and exposes them to different styles of music, has them compose pieces, teaches them theory and, according to our 11 year old son, "makes it very fun". We are impressed with the piano skills they have acquired and have yet to hear them complain about having to practice. Thank you Debi!

How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started years ago teaching English to some friends who barely spoke English, and loved that I was learning at the same time ! Eventually, I became a teacher and then the manager of an ESL school in Silicon Valley. I've had my own business teaching since 1997.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with people from age 4 up to age 85! I have taught people from many other countries and backgrounds, and I've worked with a variety of disabled people, too. I love my work. I want each person to discover who they can be, and how great it feels to achieve.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I have young piano students who can hold their own at jazz jam sessions. I smile when my math, reading, and writing students learn HOW to study, and do it willingly. I've enjoyed teaching piano students who are seriously disabled, but are able to release their feelings at the piano. I love teaching international people all aspects of the English language, and have discovered a lot of things along the way. When reading students get that they really can read, they beam. I love that.
