I was very happy with Tim’s service, communications, professional work ethic and fair pricing. He responded to my quote request within a few moments, and was able to schedule my repair for the very next day. He called me to do a quick assessment (which turned out to be accurate) of my furnace issue prior to arrival. This was important because he could then come prepared with exact needed part and get the job done in one visit. He also did a few other maintenance items and made some suggestions for future maintenance. I will definitely utilize Tim for any future HVAC needs. Thanks for your help, Tim.

Alex came out right away to diagnose what looked like a simple problem that turned out to be several issues with the furnace in our home. He took the time explain what he was doing, the rationale for replacing parts and how he expected the system to perform after repairs were complete. His pricing was upfront and fair for the work needed. I felt comfortable with him in my home and would recommend Alex to anyone needing an HVAC pro.

We just had our AC installed by Top Dawg. You can definitely tell that they are professional and have plenty of experience with this type of work. Living in the Green Valley Ranch area, if you don't already have AC installed, it can be challenging to install a unit after the fact. Eric was very creative about his solution regarding how he wanted to perform our installation and it turned out great! His initial quote was exactly the price that we paid for the installation and he was able to get us scheduled within a couple of days of our acceptance of his Thumbtack offer. If I ever need to recommend anyone else for HVAC needs, I'm going to refer them to Top Dawg. Eric and the guys on his team were very professional. Thanks, guys!

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

Rob did a great job with a tough assignment: installing a steam humidifier in our old home. In fact, I called applewood heating and cooling, but they turned the job down because they thought it was too difficult. Rob, however, was fair with his pricing and was diligent about doing a much needed HVAC system tune up as well. He also found a creative solution to a thermostat issue that I didn’t think we could solve. All in all, we are happy with our humidifier installation and the system tune up. I would certainly recommend Rob for a tough HVAC job.

I am happy with the service and installation provided by HVAC Plus. One job turned into two and then into a few more. I will have Rich Philbrick's crew back out in the spring for additional work as well. Rich installed our main home furnace, a hot water heater, a Generac generator, a garage gas heater, and a secondary furnace in the upstairs. Needless to say, I've seen a lot of Rich this year. We felt his prices were fair, the installations were done properly and once on the schedule, the jobs were completed in a timely manner. We are happy with the Amana products recommended which have the stainless steel tubular heat exchanger. It's nice to know we won't have to worry about replacement for a long, long time. There were also service companies Rich subcontracted with; Jay's Electric for wiring the generator, heating, and air, and a crane company that moved the generator to the backyard. Both were very good companies to work with. This makes it easier getting through a project when you know those recommended are qualified and produce quality work. I appreciate that a lot. Thanks Rich and to your HVAC Plus crew.

Out of 4 highly rated HVAC guys from Thumbtack who came to my house to give me an estimate, Will was the only person to actually get back to me. He was upfront about everything, was diligent with taking pictures and measurements and was knowledgeable about the process. Will and his workers showed up on time and were clean, polite and spoke perfect English. He was also able to provide insurance information very quickly when I requested it. The worksite was spotless when they left and they took pictures of all the hidden work done in our attic so we could see their finished work. No surprise costs at the end, and they finished faster than expected. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to get HVAC work done.

Honest and wise. Justin was the only HVAC service provider who actually diagnosed my unusual "squeaking" problem. Will need the energy company to work on the rest.

Steve was awesome! What a great experience. Not only was Steve fast with his response, he gave great explanations of what needed to be done and examples of why he proposed what he offered. His pricing was in line with other competitors but what sold me is his prompt responsiveness & professionalism. Additionally, I noticed Steve is just getting started and trying to establish his new business. I fully support new local upstarts and he goes the extra mile to make sure you're happy with his service and completed product. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND STEVE TO ANYONE NEEDING HVAC SERVICE. I plan to use him for my 2nd unit tune up and will recommend him to anyone I know who asks.

It is such a relief to know that in my busy schedule I can count on her to help knock out some of the items on my do-to lists. I would highly recommend One Mile Above Maintenance.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
