Our irrigation system broke and leak at the manifold section. It was a bigger task than first expected, but Marc handled it like a pro. He diagnosed, problem solved the issue the right way. I would highly recommend Marc and wouldn't hesitate to ask for his assistance in the future. Thank you Marc for the great work that you've done.

Luis and his crew were outstanding from start to finish! I contacted J&G to set up an estimate to install a new irrigation system at my house. Luis was able to see me the next day. It was clear he was an experienced pro as soon as we started talking about the project. My house is over 100 years old so there were a few obstacles I was concerned about. Not only did Luis have great ideas to help overcome these issues, his finished design was even better than what we had originally discussed. After the project started, I asked for a few add-on tasks and they were happy to help at a fair price. The whole crew was in and out extremely fast. They met or exceeded all of my expectations. It's great to know that I have a contractor I can trust and I plan to call them for all future irrigation and landscaping needs. J&G Landscape did a fantastic job and I highly recommend them.

They are courteous, reasonable, responsible and honest! They assessed every irrigation zone carefully and were able to recommend some improvements, all the while working with our current system that had been installed improperly from the very beginning. We have tried at least 8-9 different irrigation companies over the past 20 years, and not one had been able to do what Stephanie and Martin were able to accomplish. They are very knowledgeable and they did what they said they would do and it worked! They are hardworking and trustworthy!

Joshua is a gem. Super passionate about his work, reliable, responsible and very hard working. Our previous contractor messed up our sprinkler system, our finances and nerves, and Josh came in and saved us. Finally a guy who is proud of his work and stands behind it! Josh and his nice crew did a great job bringing our backyard project back to life and they did so for a very fair price. We plan on hiring Green Bean's again and highly recommend them.

I was so impressed with MB3's professionalism. He had a good look at my irrigation system and assessed all the problems, told us why (previous owner's did not winterize), gave a base price to fix it and suggested a few other quick things to prevent other problems in the future. He also told us what to expect maintenance wise in the future (parts that will wear out in the next season or two). The value of his services were spot on with my expectations and his thorough quality of work was excellent. I would highly recommend MB3 Services and will continue to call them for maintenance on our irrigation system.

Wed Aug 16, 8:18 PM If you’re contemplating hiring a good General Contractor, Daniel Gonzalez and his construction teams are your guys! We hired Daniel to finish 1,300 square feet including an extra bedroom, laundry area, storage room and quilt studio in our basement. Daniel gave a fair quote and he brought top notch teams and hard working guys to the project! His electrician did an excellent job installing all new electrical; and his HVAC guy ran new heat ducts and installed a whole house humidifier. The plumber ran new plumbing for a utility sink and washing machine. The framer did a fabulous job independently building our design to our exact specifications and even added decorative arches. The drywall guys hauled in heavy drywall sheets one-by-one because it wouldn’t fit into our window wells. The drywall installers got 4 rooms put up in one and ½ days! The tapers and texture's did an excellent job taping drywall seams and adding texture in less than two days for each team. Daniel’s crews showed up on time, they were respectful, trustworthy, and we appreciated how hard they all worked to get the job done in a timely manner. Daniel and his trim and paint team did an excellent job painting, installing our flooring, trim, doors, hardware and window ledges. Best of all, Daniel is an honest guy and does what he agrees to do. Treat these guys right and they’ll treat you right! Great job! We love our new space! Thanks Daniel!

Down to Earth Landscaping removed old landscaping in our backyard, installed sod, and replaced/fixed irrigation. Hayden was great to work with, he made sure to keep us informed and helped us make final project decisions. It is clear that he's very knowledgable in his field. His team was efficient and very hard-working. We'd definitely hire Hayden and his team again.

We have worked with Omni now for two projects. The first was a partial scrape and partial irrigation. The second was scraping the rest of the yard and installing mulch, edging and sod. Both experiences with Omni have been great. Their pricing came in very competitively. David was very respectful of our budget and very patient with all of our questions. The crew worked hard and finished the job ahead of schedule. The completed work looks beautiful! Our yard went from being a total disaster to a place that we are so excited to use as a family this summer. I highly recommend working with David from Omni and we look forward to connecting again for future projects.

Jeff was responsive, professional and provided the best price out of all contractors that bid for the job. When he said he would be here on a certain time and day, he was on time every single time (a rarity when dealing with contractors). I would not hesitate to use them again in the future and look forward to having them re-stain me fence for years to come. His work is truly the talk of the neighborhood as everyone is impressed by the quality of the fence and stain. Look no further if you want a professional to handle your fence or fence staining job.

Rene was great to work with! He responded very quickly to my ad and came out a couple days later to give me an estimate on installing sod and irrigation to our front yard. His estimate was very fair and straight forward. Less than a week after accepting his bid, he went to work and completed the job in 3 days. Our yard looks amazing! He offered a 1 year guarantee in the sod and sprinklers and threw in a few perennials for us. I found him very easy to work and communicate with and would 100% recommend him to anyone having yard work done.

Working with Mary Pat and her team has been wonderful. She is exactly the person I was looking for. Over the years, my wife and I had put in several landscaping projects to create gardens on three sides of our house. We discovered that while we love our gardens, we do not possess the time and expertise to properly care for and maintain them. Mary Pat was able to come in with her team and quickly bring our gardens back to peak health. Our plants look fresh and healthy again! While most landscaping companies are focused on providing a one time, very expensive “put in a garden and hardscape” project. Mary Pat has really filled a need for us, by providing on-going high quality care and maintenance for our garden. She also has been our “garden contractor”- finding good subcontractors to provide us with other services we need such as rebuilding a retaining wall and changing irrigation. She is easy to work with and has been an excellent communicator. I highly recommend Great Fortune Design.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
