After a bad experience where my air conditioning unit exploded after a technician came out for a simple repair (to replace the contactor), Alex came out to look at my A/C unit free of charge. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. I have spoken with several technicians and a few came to my house in the last week or so. I felt Alex was by far the most knowledgeable and I also felt he was honest, had integrity, was someone I could trust. Thanks again Alex!

Fabulous service & attention to detail. Customer service at its best. What 98 % of businesses don't understand, much less care about! They were able to replace a crawl-space furnace the very next day, with a helpful and confident attitude. I am SO GLAD I didn't go with any of the big guy's in the Yellow Pages or any of the ones with hundreds of trucks all over town. I would have paid far more, and gotten much less. Dave Rodriguez and his crew is the best there is. They are the kind of folks that make America great. They will be coming back in the very early spring to add air conditioning to my forced air system. They have earned the right to be the vendor of choice. They have also earned a spot on my REAL ESTATE Top Vendor List to all my Real Estate clients. You cannot have a more convincing testimony than that. Period!

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

Used this firm to assess my air conditioning problems. Prompt response. Friendly, helpful. I did not use their firm to replace my condenser - used another company with a lower bid.

Thumbtack make it extremely easy to connect with Mark. He proposed a very competitive entry rate and was very quick to schedule me in. He arrived exactly when he said he would and made sure he spent enough time making sure my AC unit did not fail. His attention to detail and the time he spent ensuring his work was proper made the repair well worth it. Because of my first impressions, I am having him price out a full replacement of my furnace and central air. I would highly recommend calling Mark. He is the owner and operator of his business so the buck stops with him. Its nice to have that sort of service.

No surprises! He knew what the problem was and had it fixed promptly. My furnance/air conditioner was installed about seven years ago and he pointed out how the install did not meet code. Don offered professional and sound advice for my poor circulation issues. He performed some regular maintenance I had neglected and charged me for the maintenance and $15 for parts used in the repair. An excellant value! Easy to talk to, frank and knowledgeable, Don is the kind of tech you need to have on your go to list.

Bob is the most thorough tech we have ever had the privilege of having come to our home and fix our furnace, let alone the multiple of other repairs he has the talents and knowledge to fix, just ask him and you will hear the truth. He was so detailed in furnace adjustments, even though we had another HVAC tech check the furnace when we moved here, he found the setting on natural gas when it was supposed to be propane, was on air conditioning instead of heat, replaced dangerous broken parts that if not replaced could have burnt down our home and it was very loud but after he did a thorough cleaning it is so quiet. If you need any repair he does, know it will be done right and safe!!! Besides being kind, friendly and fun to be around, D.B.A. Robert Nemec is the Master Technician, The Man To Call!!!

We needed central air conditioning for our new home in Castle Rock and we interviewed several HVAC companies before making a decision. We received quotes from: Southwest Heating & Cooling, All Seasons Mechanical, Mr. Cool Heating & Cooling, Parker Heating and Air, and Blue Flame Heating & Air Conditioning. Out of the five businesses, we decided to hire Justin from Blue Flame for the following reasons: 1) Justin was extremely responsive to both phone and e-mail. (I actually found BlueFlame through Thumbtack, and Justin replied almost immediately after I posted the job early on a Sunday morning). 2) Justin had excellent communication, and always called in advance to let us know that he was on his way. 2) Justin did not try to upsell us on equipment that we did not need. 3) The quote that Blue Flame provided was very competitive compared to competitors. 4) Justin actually took the time to come back and perform a free heat load calculation on our house before we even hired him. Only one other vendor did this and they were not nearly as thorough as Justin was. 5) Blue Flame was the only Rheem dealer, and his competitors could not say anything bad about the Rheem brand of air conditioners. By contrast, Trane dealers claimed that Goodwin was unreliable, and Goodwin dealers claimed that Trane was both over-priced and had poor compressor motors. I don't know if either of those claims can be substantiated, but my online research indicated that Rheem units were very reliable. 6) The estimate, heat load calculation, and work order from Blue Flame were all provided electronically, and contained thorough documentation of the work that was performed. Justin used an iPad to document his work as he went and quickly published the results online. Although Justin is licensed in Douglas County, he was not licensed in Castle Rock. Normally this would be a deal breaker, but given the reasons we decided to hire Justin over his competitors, we decided to just pull the permit ourselves as homeowners. (Note: In Castle Rock, this is done entirely online, costs $50, and is issued in under 24 hours). I and am happy to report that Blue Flame passed the town's inspection and that all work was completed according to code. I did use Sun Dog Electric for the electrical work, so I cannot comment on the quality of the electricians that Blue Flame normally employs, but I am sure they would also do fine. We had Justin install a central humidifier for us as well, which his competitors were not even sure would be possible given the small space in our utility closet (see pictures on Yelp). Justin was able to fit an advanced Honeywell unit into the system just fine. Although I won't know how well it will work until this winter, I am confident that we will be very happy with it. Justin took the time to explain how the new air conditioning system works, as well as the humidifier, and the required maintenance for both units. He demonstrated their operation, and provided both manuals to us. In addition, Justin recommended an annual system check, which he can perform for only $49. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the quality of installation and service that was provided by Justin from Blue Flame. If you are currently in the market for a new A/C system or furnace, need repairs, or just maintenance performed, you can stop researching and just call Blue Flame. They're competitively priced, have good products, and provide excellent customer service. What more can you ask for?

Devin came to give a quote for an installation of a central AC. He showed up on time, and was the only person of all the estimates I got who covered his boots when coming into our basement. He was knowledgeable about the units and what it would take to install them and he also gave a very competitive price quote. Ultimately, I am going to hold off on installing the AC for the time being, but the professionalism and price that D.M. Sherk AC offered earned a 5 star review. Thanks, Devin!

Steve did an excellent job installing my 50 gallon Rheme hot water heater. He arrived right on time, he was very professional, and he did great work. It took about 2 hours for the install and he gave me the lowest price out of all the other offers. Overall I am very happy with the experience. The hot water heater works great and I will consider hiring him for air conditioning, furnace service, and hot water heater maintenance in the future.

I took my time searching for a reputable HVAC company in the metro Denver area and narrowed it down to 3 companies. Quinnair not only offered better equipment, their bid was considerably less than the other 2. I could not be happier with my decision. It's been nearly a year since the installation of my new furnace and central air conditioner and not only are my energy bills less than previous years, my home is much warmer in the winter months and cooler in the summer months. I've recommended Quinnair to all my family members and friends. This is a company that puts the customer before profit, they do not oversell, they suggest and then they let you decide.

I used IQ Heating & Air at our old shop for routine maintenance on the furnace and cooling system. They are always professional and efficient. They installed a new system at our new shop and all went smooth, no headaches or surprize extra charges. Mark also is helping in the design and build of the paint spray booth for my company. Excellent job! -Jim, The Good Painters, llc

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
