Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Dustin, Russell, and the rest of the crew at LoHi Fencing do AMAZING work and can handle large jobs in only a day. They were able to break up and remove old concrete footers, remove about 100' of old fence, install 175' of cedar fence, and build 3 cedar gates in just two days (to be fair, they were delayed by a different contractor's concrete pouring and setting, otherwise LoHi would have been done in a day). The debris was minimal, and they did a great job of cleaning up at the end of each work day. Further, LoHi treated our new siding with care and were careful around our neighbor's fence they connected to, so as to not damage anything. And, most importantly, LoHi came in considerably lower than 3 other fencing estimates I received from other Thumbtack contractors, in some cases, several thousand dollars lower. I would refer LoHi Fencing to anyone who was thinking about replacing or adding privacy or decorative fences and/or gates on their property.

Long story short; a very nice crew and person, but they did not create a solid fence given the expectations. I am very disheartened as I really enjoyed them personally, but felt very hurt when fixes were not finished, and a sloppy fence was executed. All of my neighbors that are connected to the fence have told me this is the worst fence job they have seen, which definitely bums me out as they helped pay for the thing. I could go on for a very long time, but I would say I hope that Creative Outdoor Finishes really take a deep look inward before telling a client that they can build a solid fence. I hope that I can take down this bad review in the future, but for now I have to let others know not to use COF.

Ramiro and his crew are AMAZING! I moved into a new house that didn't have a fenced yard. I have 3 dogs and needed this to be done ASAP. Ramiro came out to take measurements within 2 hours of me reaching out! He took time to measure accurately, look at how to best maximize the space and where to put the gate, and showed me different designs for me to choose from. I can't say enough good things about his company. Ramiro takes pride in his work, very easy to work with, always smiling, and provides the perfect level of value, craftsmanship, and customer service. You will not regret using his company to build your fence!

Henry & his crew were awesome! They were extremely efficient, professional and respectful, and we love our fence! They were also extremely knowledgeable - when they came over for quote, Henry noticed certain things that could become an issue during the installation process that other companies did not notice/address. Would highly recommend!

We had a portion of our fence blow down due to wind and Natalya and her crew saved the day. Quick and easy to communicate with. Came out right away for the estimate, and were able to complete the full repair the next day. They also went above and beyond and helped with additional landscaping and debris removal items while onsite. Would highly recommend and will be using them again.

I would recommend Rick (RDM Construction) without hesitation. He will bring extensive knowledge and skills to any construction project you might have. He rebuilt ~250 feet of cedar fencing, including two gates, in my backyard. The finished product looks great! Once the job was started, he was there every day until it's completion. His work ethic is remarkable. I'm trying to come up with new projects for him to do on my home. I would hire him again in a heartbeat :)
