Mr. Mazur tutored two of my children, my daughter was in her last year of college when she first started working with Dave. She desperately needed to pass her math class in order to graduate. Mr. Mazur was knowledgeable with the specific math my daughter was having difficulty with. She described David Mazur’s teaching style as patient, easy to understand and describe his instruction as “just making sense”. After working with K. once a week for a few months, K was feeling much more confident and comfortable in math class. Best of all, she raised her grade from a D to a B+. When my son began to have problems with grasping math concepts his freshman year of high school (must run in the family), Dave was a natural choice. As a busy parent, I was impressed with how reliable and prepared he was for each tutoring session. He confirmed each session the day before with a text and always asked what my son was specifically having difficulty with prior to each sessions so that he was always prepared and able to address E.’s immediate math problems. No tutoring-time was wasted! As an educator myself, I was incredibly impressed with Dave’s genuine interest in helping the kids grasp concepts, his teaching experience was evident in the way he was able to adjust his instruction to meet individual needs and learning style. Dave’s fee is very reasonable and I was thrilled that he was able to come to our home to tutor. He will also meet you at a convenient place for you! What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I typically charge between $40 and $60 per hour, based on respective distance from Branford, CT, willing to travel in an approximate area from Hartford in the north to the coast of CT from Stratford to Saybrook. I grant every 1/3 half hour for free, in any given session, for Branford clients.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My approach to students is to be non-judgmental in regards to their difficulties. However, I also want students to gain self confidence in the abilities they have but may not recognize. I will also communicate with the student to determine specific obstacles to understanding that need to be removed. My typical teaching emphasis is for students to be able to understand and use concepts, rather than for just memorization. I believe this for better concept retention and application. However, I am willing to adjust my teaching goals and emphasis to what is wanted or needed by the paying client. At the same time, I will try to figure out ways to help a student remember procedures, steps or relationships.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have experience teaching high school mathematics on a one to one teacher to student ratio at a non-public boarding school. I also have taught high school level math in typical classroom environments of public schools as a CT Certified Secondary School Mathematics Teacher, obtaining my certification through a planned program at Southern Connecticut State University. Subjects I have taught are Algebras 1 and 2, PreCalculus, Calculus, and SAT Math Preparation. Prior to teaching, I worked in industry in a number of roles with the most time spent coordinating product safety compliance.
