I was 100% satisfied with the work I had done by this company! They were very helpful and accommodating from the receptionist who answered the phone to the man who came to do my work. They came to my house the same day that I called! The gentleman who came to clean my tile and grout in my kitchen was prompt, knowledgeable, nice and thorough. My floors came out amazing!! The price they gave me was more reasonable than any other company around. I will definitely use this company for any other work in my house that I need!

Daniel and his guys did a great job installing oak hardwood floors in our 1,600 sq ft home. He also removed the previous tile, blue stone, replaced two sections of rotten subfloor, and leveled the surface. Overall it was 7 plus days for multiple guys and I feel he charges a fair price. I've already recommended him to my in-laws as they are updated the floors in their basement. Daniel is a great guy and you should definitely use him if you want a quality job for a good price.

Rome and his guys were great. We originally planned on only doing a couple things, and after seeing the quality of the work on stair repair and popcorn removal, we also had hardwood flooring installed, drywall replaced and tiling done. The work Johnny, Reuben, Jesus and the other guys did was beautiful and the prices Rome gave us were very reasonable. I would recommend him and his guys to anyone looking to get professional quality work done to their home.

Angelo and his crew did such a fantastic job on our hardwood floors! We hired them to install hardwood in the kitchen and refinish the existing hardwood throughout the rest of our house. They were professional and finished on schedule as promised. They even replaced some of the boards without being asked. He left all the floors looking brand new and the new and old floors match seamlessly. Angelo was quick to answer my questions and give me updates on the progress. Would definitely recommend and hire again for future projects!

Eder and his team did a fantastic job on our floors! From the very start Eder was quick with responding to our questions/concerns and was very open about pricing and timing of the project. He also did a number of different stain samples for us since we weren't sure what color we wanted. We had him do wood floor refinishing/staining (on red oak), new wood floor installation, as well as refinishing of a stairway/bannisters/railings. We were going from a very light finish to a very dark finish, so there are a couple of spots on the banisters and edges of the old wood floors that you can tell it was difficult to remove the old finish but overall they did a fantastic job. The main part of the refinished floor and the new flooring look fabulous and the color is beautiful, dark, and even. At the end of the project when we requested some touch-up work he was more than happy to do what he could to meet our requests. He also gifted us some more supplies (stain, poly, brushes, sand paper) to refinish matching wood floor vents we told him we planned to purchase later on. Overall Eder was wonderful to work with and I would definitely recommend him and his team for floor refinishing and new wood floor installation! Thanks Eder for our beautiful floors!

Fernando and his team were very responsive to my request to come and see my floors, within a few hours from my inquiry, he was at our home. His quote was fair and the advice he gave in terms of what would be the best product for our floors was greatly appreciated. Fernando and his team did an excellent job in matching the color of the floors he was refinishing to the existing hardwood floors. It was hard to tell the difference. Excellent workmanship and truly a professional in every way!

Luis accommodated me for a free estimate and shortly after completed my hardwood floors which included staining as well. He assisted me with getting beautiful floor vents for my central air and also purchased and installed the saddle needed prior to the flooring job. He worked late and arrived very early to enable us to be back in our home within a few days. The floors came out amazing and he was professional throughout. I highly recommend using L&M Flooring.

We hired Anthony at the last minute to repair a nasty pet stain on our landlord's hardwood floors in order to retain our security depost. He was very understanding from the first phone call and came out within a few days to survey and provide quote. Quote was very fair and we were able to schedule the work for a few days later. The floors look great, we highly recommend!

Antonio at Master Hardwood Flooring did an amazing job on our floors. He removed carpet and installed floors in two rooms and then sanded and refinished our entire first floor. We were away the week of the sanding and refinishing and I expected to need to clean all the dust when we got home. There was not one bit of dust in our home. Antonio left everything so clean it was such a pleasant surprise. And the floors look amazing too. We highly recommend him for any flooring project you might have.

After meeting with three different flooring contractors to refinish my hardwood floors I decided to hire EP Flooring. I was very impressed how quickly Edevaldo got in touch with me to set up the appointment to come and see the property and he gave me the quote right there. He even arrived 15 minutes early. His price was the best of the three but I didn't only hire him for that reason. He was a real gentlemen. Very knowledgeable of his work, respectful and professional. The hardwood that needed refinishing was in a rental property. It was in very bad shape. Lots of dark spots, heavy traffic area damage and bad scrapes. The job took a couple of days as he had said it would. Edevaldo and his crew managed to get every deep scrap and dark spot out of my floors. I couldn't believe it. The crew always showed up a few minutes early each day, never late. The dust level during the job was minimal. Edevaldo and his crew cleaned up meticulously when they left. I couldn't be happier with the entire experience. The job came out more beautiful than I had expected it to. We have more rental properties and even our own home hardwood floors will definitely be refinished by EP Flooring. Thanks again to Edevaldo and his crew!

I am very happy with the work performed by this business. The representatives & workers were of high quality, knowledge and experience. I had rugs for over 15 years in my 2nd floor and decided to remove them and replace with prefinished hardwood floors. I had my first floor sanded, painted and coated. Both floors look spectacular! Thank you Apple Hardwood Floor Company for the great care and service you provided!! ~M. Velez, Stratford, CT

Andrew is an experienced professional. When I met Andrew I told him that I wanted to whitewash the floors in my living room. He explained the process and what was involved in achieving a lasting whitewash finish. He did exactly what he said he would do. He did a good amount of prep, taping off my other rooms to prevent dust from spreading. He and a helper came to my house 4 days in a row, leaving time for the bleaching, whitewash stain, 3 coats of a latex poly. He is detailed and checked his work thoroughly at the end to ensure the finish was perfect. I am going to be using Andrew to refinish the rest of our hardwood floors. I am planning to do a darker stain in the other rooms and definitely going with the latex poly. It’s worth the money for the high quality finish that won’t yellow or scratch like the typical oil based polys. I highly recommend Andrew. He is trustworthy and honest!

Joe, is the Best of the BEST!! He layed our flooring down in a home we just purchased in our living room and kitchen. The floor came out beautiful even others who came to do work in the home were very impressed. And the conditions the floors were in this was no easy job at all !!! Plus we had another company put carpet in bedroom but then the doors were hard to shut he took every dot for us off and shaved them so they would shut smoothly and leave a mark on the carpet. Great guy went way above and beyond our expectations and very detailed at his work!! Ad also very reasonable price. Look no further contact Spectrum Hardwood Floors Now. So thanks so much Joe for the way you went above and beyond for Chris and I.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
