My name is Lauren, I had a ceiling fan problem. My light & fan wasn't corresponding to the remote. I called Joseph & he was able to fix it. While Joseph was there he also checked out my boiler because it started making wire noises. He was able to get my boiler heating again. Joseph was very pleasent, professional & curtious. He was also very considerate about his neatness. His price was reasonable as well. I am definitely going to recommend him to my friends & family.

As an advanced do it yourselfer I normally do my own plumbing work. However, the years have taken their toll and that is no longer always possible and a job involving reconnecting 2 steam radiators to the main steam line has gone uncompleted for several years. I received an email invitation from Thumbtack to submit the job to their site. It was one of the better decisions of my life as one of the responding plumbers was William Morton. To make a long story short, William new exactly what had to be done and completed the job in a few hours with a level of expertise and professionalism rarely encountered these days. His work was well beyond my expectations and, except for the 2 now hot radiators, you would never know he was in my home. The work areas were left spotlessly clean and my heating system functioning perfectly. He was on time to the minute, completed the job with professionalism and did so at a reasonable price. I highly recommend William Morton anytime you need a plumber.

Cye helped me install 2 ecobee smart thermostats with an existing wire that was not hooked up. Additionally, the night before, I had some issues with my boiler for hydronic heat not getting pressure, and Cye was able to help me figure out why and fixed it. He took his time explaining everything as he goes and taught me my way around my heating system. Not only do I have 2 working smart thermostats now, I also feel a lot more confident around my heating system now.

Kevin is a totally amazing professional! My heating unit stopped working on a cold winter day during Presidents weekend. He was incredibly responsive and skilled. On a Monday, when no one was working, Kevin took on the job to figure out what happened. He diagnosed the problem immediately, had the spare part on his truck and then went the extra mile to fix another potential problem and didn’t charge me. I had a tenant renting the house and he saved me a lot of hassle and money. He was also incredibly nice and trustworthy. I don’t think I can remember someone so professional... truly going out of his way to get the job done!

Frank was extremely responsive, getting back to me within hours of my request. We texted back and forth to clarify my request and arrange his visit. He arrived within minutes of the appointed time, listened to me as I showed him what I wanted, worked efficiently, and explained clearly what was wrong and what needed to be done. He then set about the work. He, kindly, tried to get me parts that were more affordable, but I insisted on the more expensive parts as I preferred metal to plastic. In the end, the metal parts were unavailable at this time, so he did an excellent job with what we had to work with. While he came to do a single job, he ended up doing two other small plumbing-related things that had been aggravating us. Frank agreed to come back whenever I needed any other plumbing work and said if I happened on the metal parts I wanted, that he would be happy to install them. His price was very reasonable and he matched his quote. I feel I got my money's worth. He was respectful and quiet. I would definitely hire Frank again.

We hired Doug and his crew to set up central air on the ground floor of our house (we already had existing ducts for our heating system) and mini split ductless AC units in the bedrooms on the second floor. From start to finish Doug was punctual, clear, answered any questions I had (very responsive over the phone for last minute questions), and at the start and end of each phase of the project he always met with us to go over what would be done and to check in to make sure we were satisfied with the work after it was done or answer questions. The work was completed quickly. Unlike other contractors, there was no lull in the work. His crew worked diligently to get the work done in a timely fashion. Now that the weather has been warm enough to use the AC, we couldn't be happier. The central air cools the house quickly amd queitly amd the ductless mini splits he installed by LG are attractvie and do an excellent job cooling our large bedrooms. Whats more, we always get compliments on how nice they look. I highly recommend this company.

I got a quote fast, Sam showed up first thing in the morning as agreed, took care of the problem, and we were really satisfied. However, we later found out it was just a basic clog that needed to be cleared, no new parts or anything were installed, and that service costs about 1/3 of what we paid. Basically we overpaid without realizing it. The service was still good and the issue was resolved fast so I appreciate that part.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
