Joseph did an amazing job at assembling my Ikea wardrobe. He was extremely polite and walked me through his every step. He was friendly and very respectful of my space. Since my room was very small he assembled the wardrobe in the living room and brought it into the room. It was a tight fit, but Joseph was able to do it no problem! Would highly recommend these services and will be using them again if I need to in the future.

Jon helped me put up a few mirrors on my living room wall. The design of the mirrors was not simple and would've taken me forever to accuracy install. However I showed him my vision and he took a little over an hr to complete and they look great! I love them and I'll definitely call him again if I have another project. Very pleased!

I have an older house and none of the bedroom doors closed properly. After getting a quote, we hired Walter and he started work two days later. He was very professional and fixed every door perfectly. We will hire him for future projects around our house. I highly recommend him for any carpentry projects you have at your house.

Ely painted my bedroom. I placed a request on Thumbtack for both my bedroom and living room and hall to be painted and Ely came by to see the rooms before providing an estimate to me. I decided to have one room painted at a time and today, Ely painted the bedroom. An extremely kind and competent man - it was a wonderful experience all around. I am very satisfied with the painting job and Ely is very neat and cleans up after himself. 3 pieces of furniture in the bedroom are extremely heavy and he moved them enough so he could do his work. I will definitely be hiring Ely again and recommending him whenever I can. Highly recommend Ely.

Leonardo is outstanding! He is an artisan with many talents. He did a beautiful job repairing my coffee table and we chatted a bit during the process. I learned he is also a millworker and lighting designer so we're now working on more projects together. He is charming, honest, and fastidious.

SJ Remodeling have just finished doing our bathroom remodel. They did an excellent job. They listened to what we wanted done, and made suggestions that were very helpful. Our finished bathroom is gorgeous. Nothing was damaged, and the fine work was especially good. We liked them so much we asked them to do painting for us also. They are professional in their work. If there was a problem, they took care of it. They also did a powder room, and a basement sink and vanity. Their painting was also very good. they painted our foyer and upstairs hallway, our living room, Dining room, and children's playroom which was knotty pine. They sanded and then pickled the walls. Now it is a beautiful room. We recommend them highly.

If you are looking to hire painters...hire these guys!!! Marcelo and his worker from BNG were awesome! The price was very fair and the work was amazing! We had a 16ft high wall painted as well as the stairs and living room and all the trim in mentioned areas. These guys were so fast and that included two coats on everything. Their work was top notch, they paid attention to every detail. I did not have to ask them to fix anything and the same cannot be said for experiences we have had with other painters. They worked fast but not rushed...they were just that good! They were also very neat! I highly recommend them and will be using the again in the near future. Infact, we asked them for a quote for another job while they were here!

This was my first experience working with Thumbtack and For U Builders. I have a small house, and in the past, many contractors have simply not returned my calls because the job was considered "too small to bother." For U Builders installed 2 new custom exterior doors on my home. From the very beginning, Brandon (scheduling) and John (owner) were very communicative -- we had to schedule around the door delivery, and they were able to fit in my project as soon as the last door arrived. Stephen (Carpenter) is amazing! He made it look so easy and was attentive to every detail -- my house was built in the 1930s, so adjustments were necessary to make everything fit. When the job was finished, there wasn't a trace of dust or debris anywhere! I am very, very happy with the results, and will definitely work with For U Builders in the future. The entire team are professional, friendly, efficient and a joy to work with! Thank you!

January 15, 2018 We recently used LRL Designs for a complete makeover of our home including an additional master bath addition, removing walls between our dining room and living room, removed walls in a staircase that separated our kitchen and dining room and put in railings, redesigned the kitchen which now includes an island. Lani was great to work with! She listened to our vision and had great ideas to enhance it. During the design process she had the right balance of letting us make choices that were important to us and also saved us from ourselves on some thoughts we agreed would have been a mistake. We absolutely love the final product! It is a great combination of beautiful aesthetics and functional comfort! Everyone who has come to our home comments on how great it looks and comfortable it is. The building inspector, who sees many renovations, could not say enough about how beautiful he thought our home was as a result of the design and renovations. Our painter thought we should take pictures and submit them to a few magazines! Lani was the consummate professional throughout the entire process and was an absolute pleasure to work with! I highly recommend LRL Designs if you are considering a remodeling of your home. Joseph Urbanowicz Peekskill, NY

My husband and I hired Mike Goodman to install a replacement picture window, expand a doorway to an interior room, mount our flat screen television and replace a door and trim to our attic stairway. Mike was also able to recommend an electrician to install recessed lighting in our living room and playroom, as well as, install outside lighting. Mike did a great job on the carpentry work and oversaw the electrician work. He made sure that we were satisfied with the completed work. He provided reasonable pricing and we will definitely be hiring him again for future upgrades in our home.

I had my living room dry wall done along with molding and I have to tell you that I couldn't be happier. The job was done quickly but beautifully. It's like I just had an extension built on from scratch it looks that new. I'm also having a deck built this spring and I'm excited to see the finished product. I recommend the service to all.

I spoke with Hans through the Thimbtack app on a Friday. He came out to view the work on the next day (Saturday) and then had three of his workers in my home on Monday to complete the work. I was very impressed with him. He came to follow up on his workers and give them direction. They left my house spotless and installed a kitchen backsplash and fixed a damaged dry wall in my living room. His prices are reasonable as well. I would definitely hire him again and would recommend him to anyone.

I have been using Carlos and his crew for over ten years. They do a fantastic job - the quality of work is exceptional - both painting and building. They are timely and honest about how long a job will take, trustworthy, honest and quite talented. There isn't a room in my house they haven't touched!

Tom has done many jobs at our home in Carmel, NY, installed a two layer deck , installed 4 sliding galss doors which opened out to the new deck, riped up old style slate floors in the kitchen and installed new ones, repaired the ceiling in our living room(house was built in 55 so its this ole house,LOL) and has always done a fime job. After all this work which was done since we moved in July of 2013 plus when we moved that day he also installed a wood fence around a large part of the back yard which he started the day we moved and finished within 2 days(210' of fence) so our 4 dogs would have a play/poop area. He works with you and comes up with some very good idea's on the jobs as well and his prices are fair, I would recomend Tom for any home remodeling /improvements. He will be doing our master bath floor soon as well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
