I wish I could give Hugo 10 stars. His professionalism and enthusiasm to deliver what I asked of him drove me to hire him. He did some work at my restaurant: bar finishes, front windows and whitewash. With his professional touch, a somewhat dark and dingy environment turned into a welcoming cozy space. I am extremely satisfied with Hugo’s work and will gladly recommend Hugo to anyone looking for a responsible, detailed oriented person to deliver a beautiful product.

I requested ideas on how to rearrange my living room so that I could use part of it as an art studio. Brigette King of Design Frix came to my apartment and made several suggestions and also hired a person who could do the work to affect these changes. Ceiling fixtures were removed and moved around to make the lighting work better. Furniture was moved around to achieve a neat look for the living room even though I will be using part of it to work in. I am happy with the results.

Maggie made the process of my interior design project go smoothly and she was so much fun to work with. Her "out-of-the-box" aesthetic brought colors, textures and styles together and made my house stand out in a way I didn't think possible. We are so happy with the end result and know we can count on Maggie next time we have a project in our home.

I worked with Bharti for the design of my personal executive office space.  We agreed on a flat fee rate, which I found to be desirable so that I could include the fee in the budget and not be surprised at the end.  Bharti visited the space, received input on my ideas and tastes, and then created a visual plan with suggested colors, furniture placement, window treatments, etc.  Her initial plan was right on and she made recommendations that were consistent with what I liked, but also offered things that I had not thought of, which is what you hope for in using a designer.  Bharti also arranged for contractors to complete painting, etc. and was helpful in moving the project along.  She is delightful to work with, thorough, professional, and goes above and beyond in seeing the project to completion. When my wife saw the office, she couldn’t believe the transformation; it is very warm and inviting. We were so pleased with Bharti, we have asked her to design some rooms at our home as well. I enthusiastically recommend Bharti for your interior design needs!

I'm a fellow interior designer and Ivan, of Peacock Home & Garden Designs, helped me install a holiday window display at the Summit Rug showroom. It was sush a pleasure to work with him. He treated my project as though it were his own, he went above and beyond the call of duty in numerous ways, and his contractor skills came in handy with the --physics-- of the installation. We had to suspend the chairs in mid air, and the ideas he brought to the table left me confident that the chairs would successfully ski down the rug hill. My overall experience was that I had worked with Ivan dozens of times before. But, it was our first time working together. Definately will not be the last.

We worked with The Huberman's to renovate and design our new 10,000 square foot home. It was a 2 year project, where we changed every element of the home: lighting and audio systems, wall coverings and floor design, purchasing all furniture (mostly custom) bedding, towels, all decor pieces. . No stone was left unturned. We worked seamlessly together to create our dream home which we now have the pleasure of living in. Not only is the home a showpiece, but it is comfortable and inviting in every space. The Huberman's are creative and thoughtful and totally dedicated to their projects and their clients. We would highly recommend working with them.

It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter of reference for Helen Grubel, my interior designer. I have known Helen for almost 10 years and she has been fantastic to work with. When we initially met, I was planning a renovation of part of my home. Midway through that project our home was destroyed by a fire and we needed to rebuild it entirely. Helen literally helped with every aspect of the re-design. She was and continues to be a pleasure to work with always strives for perfection. As we were dealing with numerous vendors and tradesman, it was not unusual for something to catch Helen’s eye that was troublesome, even if my husband and I were pleased with the initial result. Helen holds everyone accountable to the highest standard, herself included. She has incredible taste but makes certain to give the client multiple options that reflect their aesthetic preferences. I have the utmost respect for Helen, her integrity and commitment to the design process and her clientele. She is hard-working and always reachable and accountable. On top of that, she actually makes it fun! Elise L. Mamaroneck, NY

I cannot sing enough praises about this dynamic design duo! I have been working with Tim and Stuart for several years now, and have had the great pleasure of completing numerous projects together. Regardless of the scope of work, seemingly impossible deadlines, or high profile purchaser, I know without a shred of doubt my clients will be in the best of hands. I recently worked on converting a massive grocery warehouse into 335 apartments along the Brooklyn Waterfront, and Warner York was able to provide interior design help to several of my buyers. Each was handled with the upmost professionalism, and their homes were tailored perfectly to fit their personalities. Each unique and handled with the upmost care. I always look forward to collaborating with this team and hold them in the upmost regard, they consistently go above and beyond. You will not be disappointed when you enlist for their services!

Amand is absolutely amazing. She has come up with an easy to understand system to help you (re)design your space while keeping it completely affordable. That is important since the other interior designers I consulted with were charging insane rates. She works very close with you to find the right touch that works for you and understand your needs. Even after finishing all her responsibilities for my apartment she stayed available for and responded promptly to any questions I had.

Naika helped transform our empty living room into a beautifully furnished elegant space. It’s now our favorite room in the house. She’s enthusiastic, creative, open minded, and always kept us on track. It was my first time hiring an interior designer and it was definitely well worth it. Can't wait to do our next room. I would highly recommend NJA Interiors for any project, large or small!

She has helped me with remodeling and designing my master bathroom, coordinating perfect paint colors for both the interior and exterior of my home, as well as helping me with space planning of all my furniture. I absolutely LOVE everything she has done in my home. Jonathan is brilliant, in his knowledge of how to design something you have in your head onto paper, precisely. He has the tools, the background education, the psychology to deal with people who just don't know if their ideas about what they want can be done and he interacts with people like no one I have ever met before. I was so lucky to have found him, I recommend him to anyone who is thinking about doing a home project and just does not know where to begin. Jonathan is your person to help you with this!! He is so happy doing this job and that means us, as homeowners benefit from his joy of his job! I recommend to anyone thinking of updating/adding on their home to use Jonathan!

I would have never been able to envision the out come of our makeover. I met Franck after winning a National Barber Shop Challenge, a $20,000.00 Makeover. Franck flew in from NY, we met and he asked if I had any ideas in mind??? I said I am great at hair and you are great at designing, so I trust you 100% to do what, you do. I was confident in allowing him to use his creativity. I did want the Salon to look upscale yet still be inviting/comfortable. So when the unveiling of the Makeover happened...can you tell I was more than pleased!!!! Franck is very professional, patient, creative and he communicates well. He had 6 days to get the plumbing, electricity and carpentry done and he met the deadline with stars!!! Will I recommend Franck...well,that is why I am leaving my review. Franck gets 2 thumbs up from me. Hopefully, we can work together again, I know I will be beyond pleased and so will you when you work with him. Thank you Franck for making Simply Erinn's Unisex Hair Salon look FABULOUS!!!

We had a vacant apartment in our home and decided to rent it out. It needed an updated look before we could show it. Brenda Home Staging came in and provided several options for a new layout, color scheme and updated fixtures. All within budget. Would definitely recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
