Marylyn and her crew at Juste Hors D'Oeuvres and Much More were terrific - I recommend them highly! Our daughter's wedding was July 6th; Marylyn's communication was friendly and informative from the start. She followed through and followed-up. With planning from a distance and the bride and groom out of state, we could not schedule our "tasting" as early as I would have liked. Marylyn was reassuring and her policies fair. She was sensitive to the needs of our guests; e.g., made a great gluten free egg roll stuffed with avocado and tangy sauce. Guests especially enjoyed Marylyn's Salmon preparation and the Mole Poblano Chicken. It was a pleasure to work with an experienced professional who took a personal interest in making our family celebration memorable and delicious.

Chef Thomas catered a delicious meal including appetizers, main course desserts and even special dishes for the kids, for my husband's 40th birthday. He was even able to customize certain dishes for a vegan and gluten free guest. And every dish was out of this world. My personal favorite was the jerk chicken. So, so good. And the chocolate cake and pineapple upside down cake were absolutely phenomenal. I highly recommend Chef Thomas for any event. By the way, he is super professional and very easy to deal with. Thank you for making my husband's birthday a huge success Chef Thomas!!

We would 100% recommend Festive Food Caterers to anyone looking for excellent food and even better service, at a great price! We hired Festive Food Caterers for our wedding with approximately 100 guests. Michel and his team are phenomenal! Michel consistently went out of his way to give us a delicious, polished menu within our price range. He was extremely communicative and offered flexible tastings leading up to our wedding. During the event, there were zero hiccups or problems and Michel and his team were meticulously preparred. On top of that, the food was absolutely amazing!! (Try the steak and chimichurri sauce!) Definitely consider Festive Food Caterers for whatever your event may be. They are fantastic!! (The food was so good we didn't have time to take photos before we ate it, but it looked and tasted delicious!)

I can't even begin to express how much Platter Matters Catering was the logistical backbone of our corporate event. They are definitely NOT just another vendor but a partner and consultant to plan and execute your perfect event. They were willing to make special substitutions to fit our preferences and even shared some fun creative ideas for us. The food was simply delicious; it tasted as if made with love and pride. Our guests appreciated the attention to any serious food allergies. All staff was amazing, and Ivett (owner) was a fantastic resource and helped immensely with the planning process, logistics, and answered my questions at all hours of the day. I highly recommend them for any event! Deborah

I was planning a rehearsal dinner in Old Saybrook, CT. I live in Texas. I found Susan and Seaflour Foods by chance. I cannot give Susan enough credit for pulling off a spectacular event for us. She scoured the area near Old Saybrook to find a venue for me. She and her wonderful friend, Maureen, turned the old cottage at the Westbrook Elks Lodge into a charming and inviting space that fit my theme for a New England shore dinner. I fretted from afar but Susan kept telling me not to worry, that it would be fabulous...and fabulous it was. Did I mention that the food was amazing as well? She even made sure that the vegan, the gluten free and the allergic to shellfish guests had plenty to eat too. Texans and New Englanders alike told me how wonderful the whole event was. I have to say that Susan went above and beyond in helping me plan and carry out our event!

We absolutely LOVED everything about our experience with Outlaw BBQ as they catered our wedding. They went above and beyond when it came to feeding our guests and everything was absolutely delicious. They even made a tray of gluten free macaroni and cheese for us based on just us asking which of our dishes were gluten free for one of our guests, and she nearly cried with excitement--she hadn't had mac and cheese in years. Communicating with Rob was always easy and swift too. The catering they provided definitely was one of the major factors in our wedding celebration being a huge success. AND THE HAWAIIAN MEATBALLS!!! If all I ever ate again was their barbecue chicken, meatballs, and macaroni and cheese I would be happy. They brought their smoker on site and our guests could smell the delicious barbecue before our ceremony even started. We can't recommend Outlaw BBQ enough!!!

I got married in the Catskills on July 12th and I cannot rave enough about Jeanne Stark, owner of Hudson Valley Ceremonies, and our day of coordinator. I booked her services a year out, and we kept in contact throughout that period of time through email. During this time, she was very responsive to all of our questions and introduced us to potential caterers and rental companies--all the vendors we asked for help with obtaining. We booked her services for day of coordinator including the rehearsal. She was so helpful and took care of all the loose ends that we forgot about, like picking up ice, coffee, and helped us put the finishing touches on the decorations for our venue. She brought so much of her own equipment such as an arch for the backdrop of our ceremony, bistro lights for the reception, cupcake stands and so much more. Beyond all this she was calm, funny, and got all my family to help out. She even laughed at my not-so-funny anxious bride jokes. I would recommend Hudson Valley Ceremonies and Jeanne Stark wholeheartedly and without reservation for wedding coordination services. She really made our event stress-free and was a pleasure though the entire process.

The StrEATery is different from any food truck I've ever experienced. The food is made with care. The menu is new and exciting ( but recognizable ). It seems like whoever is running it cares about their customers making special items for vegans, vegetarians, and gluten free individuals. Overall the experience was fantastic. The StrEATery is run by professionals. The food is amazing.

Clayton and Kurt with Short Bus Catering catered our 2014 corporate holiday party, which was attended by not only employees but clients as well. It was held on a Saturday evening at the home of one of our firm's owners and the approximately 20 people in attendance commented on how delicious as well as beautifully presented the food was. We had the opportunity to work with Clayton and Kurt beforehand in putting together the menu we wanted, right down to having sugar cookies with our company logo printed on them in edible ink. A couple of our attendees had specific dietary challenges (nut allergies, gluten free, etc.) which Clayton was more than happy to accommodate. No chafing dishes and sterno cans here; the appetizers as well as main courses were made on premises in small batches and as they were consumed, more were made so that nothing sat around getting cold. Clayton's experience having worked for Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio at one of his restaurants was evident in his attention to detail and knowledge of how to create culinary delights. They also provided us with a bartender for the evening who kept everyone in good spirits. We would not hesitate to work with Short Bus Catering in the future, and highly recommend them for anyone's event.

Laurie and her husband catered our wedding in the hills of Ashfield, MA. They were absolutely outstanding! The food was delicious, they were so patient with us while arranging everything, and made planning very easy and hassle-free. They even accommodated us to allow for an ice cream sundae bar on site. They are very organized and helped ease our minds about forgetting anything. Their staff was very friendly and ensured everyone was happy with the amount of food they had, as well as ensuring everything tasted good. I cannot say enough nice things about this company. They really made our special day perfect. Our guests have not stopped raving about the food since. Laurie was so involved that she almost felt like a day of organizer, she is so helpful and amazing. Thank you so much to Laurie and her team for being such an incredible catering service!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
