Hired Walter to check out a clogged toilet drain. Turned out it was a broken main sewer line which he was also able to repair. I liked how he is very systematic in his approach to identify the problem and his philosophy to only fix what is broken. Also explains and communicates well and works with you. Since he can do a lot of very different tasks, I am sure I will hire him in the future and can also recommend him to everybody.

Things that made this an easy experience: -He was quickly available to do the work. -He quoted me a fair price up front. -He asked for pictures so that over the phone he could tell me about things that could increase the cost before even coming out. There are a lot of contractors that worry about losing the work so they come out first and then start to explain things to you. It was nice to have that talk about my options before hand. It also meant when he came out he was prepared to do everything in one day. -He did the work quickly and was polite the whole time even when I turned the water on upstairs and accidentally got him soaked. -He never made me feel like he was in a rush or had to leave once he was done. I always save my questions for the end and even better he started explaining things to me that I was going to ask about before I even had to ask. 5 stars. I will be calling him for all my plumbing needs going forward.

Alll our faucet problems were resolved. He responded to my request for plumbing repairs and communicated in a timely fashion. His fee was reasonable and his work was completed in a timely fashion even though he had to get a replacement for a broken line which was unexpected.

Couldn't be more please with the service. Luther and his team were prompt, assessed the problem in our crawlspace and came up with a reasonable solution, and cost thousands less than another contractor that was trying to gouge us. I would happily refer them to anyone. I truly wish all home services companies were as reliable, honest, and hardworking.

My remodeling project is still a work in progress. Brian is providing quality workmanship, has left the work area immaculate at the end of the day, and has kept me updated and involved every step of the way with our project by providing me pictures and prices of hardware, tiles, vanities etc. which is extremely helpful to me due to my work schedule and just not finding time to shop around! It is a pleasure working with a contractor who understands our budget, and is enthusiastic in accomplishing an updated, modern, and fresh look for this older bathroom. Thanks Brian!

We needed a total bathroom renovation and fast! Irving and his crew from Jerry & Carr were the first to respond on thumbtack, showing up that day to give us a fair and affordable estimate. They started a couple days later and did an a beautiful job. The bathroom looks amazing! They were quick, thorough and didn't leave a mess like most contractors. They were a pleasure to work with from start to finish! I HIGHLY recommend them!

This was my first time hiring David for a project to install backsplash in my kitchen. To start out, David's communication throughout the entire project was excellent. He was on time each day and thoroughly cleaned up after himself after each day of work. I have been a homeowner for many years. Trying to find a contractor who communicates well, cleans up after themselves, shows up on time and completes project on time is rare in the industry. To top it off, David craftsmanship was excellent. He was detail oriented and would not closeout the project until he thought each detail was perfect; then confirming with me if the job was to my satisfaction. I would definitely recommend David for work. GREAT JOB DAVID!

Botticelli Plumbing & Heating came out in the "4 Easter" (you know the 4th snowstorm in a row) ... as scheduled. Dan from BP&H did an amazing job - working together with a special "quiet valve" - Dan was able to re-pipe the Sump / Sewer ejector line using the valve and some 45 degree angles and WA LA - NO THUD. We were suffering from a constant loud thud then the pump would shot odd as the water would rush back and slam on the valve - not any more - perfectly quiet and much more secure. I highly recommend Botticelli Plumbing & Heating & Dan!!!

Larry is the third generation in the site work and septic business. It is great to have the owner on site performing the work. Larry was prompt and his price to remove tree stumps post tornado was very fair. Other contractors were jacking up their prices for storm damage work. Highly recommend.

I'm so glad I met Wendell he was outstanding and most of all honest which I have noticed is hard to find when hiring contractors, plumbers etc... I had a plumbing issue since I bought my home and I was dreading looking for someone to fix it.. I'm so glad thumbtack got me in contact with bcs. Wendell was here 30 minutes after I called him, he went through everything with me. He answered my barrage of questions patiently and got to work and fixed the issue I've been dealing with for 3 months in no time. I would recommend him a thousand times over and I will be using his services for my other projects.

I hired John for many jobs in my house. He replaced the floor in two rooms, painted the rooms, added nice molding, and I was very pleased with his work. Second time I hired him he rebuilt an old bathroom, made it look amazing, unrecognizable ! with its beautiful marble and nice tile work, as well new plumbing. The third time I hired him , John renovated my old sunroom. He covered the inside walls with nice panels , installed new windows, installed new light/fan, installed two outside doors, vinyl siding outside the sunroom, and everything looks just impacable. I would always recommend Mr John Palmer to any of my friends, or to anybody that need a professional contractor, someone you can rely on, someone you can count on and trust.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
