Horace of VRP was very responsive to a tight timeline for installation of carpeting in my new office. He showed up for a free estimate and for the job itself on time, advised me on various options but never pressured my decisions. The carpeting was installed ahead of schedule, the job was well done for a fair price and it looks great. I would absolutely hire VRP in the future and have no hesitation recommending them.

Rome and his guys were great. We originally planned on only doing a couple things, and after seeing the quality of the work on stair repair and popcorn removal, we also had hardwood flooring installed, drywall replaced and tiling done. The work Johnny, Reuben, Jesus and the other guys did was beautiful and the prices Rome gave us were very reasonable. I would recommend him and his guys to anyone looking to get professional quality work done to their home.

JCEC contractors (http://www.jcecpainting.com/about.html) and painting company do more than just paint a room they actually transform a room. My wife has been watching all of the DIY shows on television and came up with an idea on changes she wanted to make to the kitchen. From her idea to completion, the transformation was amazing. We did not have to contract out to many different sub-contractors the team at JCEC did it all including electrical, tile work, woodwork and yes painting. I would strongly recommend them to anyone who is looking for someone who can do it all and at a good price.

Osman was amazing. He replied to my request and arrived exactly when he said he would. I needed to have my lower cabinet and its granite countertop moved back against the wall. He had slipped over an inch away and the granite backsplash was dangerously precarious. Then I wanted him to remove all the poorly installed granite back splash and put up a full ceramic tile backsplash. He looked at the job, explained what had to be done and estimated how long it would take. He gave me a very fair price and we agreed to a start date. He arrived on time, with all his equipment and with a helper. He was very neatly dressed and insisted on taking off his shoes before coming in the house. He and his partner worked from 9:00a till about 5:30p. They cleaned up everything and bagged all the trash. They returned once to grout and will return once more to seal the backsplash. The job is perfect. He is an excellent craftsman, meticulous and exact. He was very quiet and extremely respectful of my home. I will be hiring him again and again for all sorts of work and repairs. I recommend him completely and with NO reservations.

This was my first time hiring David for a project to install backsplash in my kitchen. To start out, David's communication throughout the entire project was excellent. He was on time each day and thoroughly cleaned up after himself after each day of work. I have been a homeowner for many years. Trying to find a contractor who communicates well, cleans up after themselves, shows up on time and completes project on time is rare in the industry. To top it off, David craftsmanship was excellent. He was detail oriented and would not closeout the project until he thought each detail was perfect; then confirming with me if the job was to my satisfaction. I would definitely recommend David for work. GREAT JOB DAVID!

Chris was a pleasure to work with. He built us a custom cabinet for the laundry room, installed beadboard in the bathroom and turned an old dresser into a sink console. He was so helpful throughout the process by recommending resources for everything I was looking for. He was right there with me during the struggle of trying to find the right size, shape, style sink for the dresser. His work was high quality; he was always on time; and did what he said he'd do. We will definitely hire him again for any future needs.

I had a bathroom from the 1970's complete with a blue tab and tile. All the tiles along the tub were falling out and leaking. I called Bathfitters, and they wanted an exorbinate amount to fix it. Tony came out and gave me some fantastic ideas. First of all, he suggested we retain the blue tub, which I wanted to do, and which makes the bathroom unique. Then he suggested a bring in a neutral wall tile, BUT add aborder of blue tile that would match the bathtub and bring the room together. He also quoted me for a new floor, painting the wall, installing a new toilet, and moving and reinstalling a heavy cabinet. He work was impeccable. He was always on time. He price was unbelievably less than Bathfitters to do all the work. He also did extra work, like personally refinishing some work along the border of the shower. He went out of his way to do an amazing job. I would highly recommend him for his attention to detail, creativity, and willingness to work with the client.

Jeff at BTR Tile & Stone was one of three recommended contractors at the local tile store when I was looking for someone to install a tile backsplash in 2010. He was more professional and knowledgeable than the other two contractors. For example, when he stopped by to give an estimate, he brought a binder with his certifications and photos of his work. He also provided a list of references and was the only contractor to provide a detailed written estimate with all the prices split out for separate items. I actually called everyone on his reference list and no one had a bad thing to say about him or his work. Even though his quote was higher than the other contractors, I ended up hiring him. I was very impressed with the time he took to mark the layout of the tile so that everything was lined up perfectly. He made the proper adjustments for cabinets and a window sill which were not level. The work was completed on time and the backsplash looks great. I would definitely recommend him to others who need tile work done.

I hired Scott to completely remodel an outdated bathroom from 85 in my new home. Scott handled the complete demo, rewiring/electric, plumbing, sheetrock/molding, tile/grout work, glass installation, and all other details of the job. It was so convenient to have one person organizing the work for the bathroom so I did not need to hire multiple people and coordinate the jobs myself. I was able to communicate well with Scott on what our vision was for the bathroom. He helped pick pain colors, fixtures, and tile options. My husband and I couldn't be happier with the final product. The workmanship is second to none! The drywall and tile look amazing! Thank you Scott for all the hard work you put in... we will definitely be calling you for another project soon.

Patrick Danford I initially hired to renovate an old outdated bathroom in our home. He replaced the drywall, tiled the floors installed new sink shower toilet marble flooring- the works. It looks amazing. We liked his work so much we asked him if he would paint and put up wainscoting in the entire interior house which he did at a cost far lower than other quotes we received and he did an exceptional job. He and his staff did such an outstanding job on those projects - We have continued to hire him for small and large projects around our home. He scraped our outdated popcorn ceilings, renovated our kitchen, installed a beautiful patio around our pool and re-laid our front walkway (brick) turning it from old and sagging into beautiful and charming again. Would definitely recommend this owner and company. Hardworking and trustworthy.

My wife and I are very glad we hired this company. From the initial consultation to the completion of the job they were contracted for (installation of 2 handrails in separate locations of basement) they were punctual, courteous and respectful of our home. The owner, John Haskell, asked pertinent questions as to our preferences and reasons for requesting the job and delivered, exactly, what we asked for. His quotes are very detailed about the materials used and the estimated labor. He doesn't practice in price gouging. One of the things that impressed me is that we have 2 small kittens that are in their exploratory phase and they made sure to keep them clear of the work area without scaring them. When they finished the job, their work area was immediately cleaned as it was prior to their arrival. Mr. Haskell walked us through the job and made sure we were satisfied before leaving the site. You can't find this level of professionalism in contractors these days and we appreciated this and will most definitely hire them for future projects in our new home (we're currently selling our existing home). We will also not hesitate to recommend him to friends and family as well. We feel confident in saying that to any who reads this will not regret hiring Limited Budget. Thanks again, Limited Budget, we will be hiring you, again, soon!

I hired John for many jobs in my house. He replaced the floor in two rooms, painted the rooms, added nice molding, and I was very pleased with his work. Second time I hired him he rebuilt an old bathroom, made it look amazing, unrecognizable ! with its beautiful marble and nice tile work, as well new plumbing. The third time I hired him , John renovated my old sunroom. He covered the inside walls with nice panels , installed new windows, installed new light/fan, installed two outside doors, vinyl siding outside the sunroom, and everything looks just impacable. I would always recommend Mr John Palmer to any of my friends, or to anybody that need a professional contractor, someone you can rely on, someone you can count on and trust.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
