Michelle is a lovely person! With her help, my husband and I were able to be away from home for two nights for my daughter's wedding. Michelle cared for our pets while we were away. Our cat is easy - she is used to us being away (the cat is not a people person), but she is 13 and needs to have someone around to keep an eye on her. But our precious bunny is only 1 1/2 years old and he loves to have people around. Michelle took the time to visit us prior to the time she needed to pet sit. This gave us (people and pets) a chance to meet and connect to be sure we were comfortable with one another. During the two days Michelle was pet sitting, she sent photos via email to let us know our bunny was doing well and having fun. Michelle is kind and gentle and truly demonstrated genuine concern for our pets. She asked many questions to be sure she would be prepared to care for them in the best way possible. She was understanding of our "obsession" with our bunny and she gave us such a feeling of comfort, we knew he would be OK. We are very grateful to Michelle. We would absolutely recommend Michelle as a pet sitter!! She is an amazing person, and we were so blessed that she cared for our pets so we could enjoy one of the most important events of our lives.

Snaggle Foot came twice daily to care for our two cats and our lizard while we were away on our honeymoon. This was a gift from the groom's mother, who had done a lot research into pet sitters in the New Haven area and found Snaggle Foot to have the best combination of flexible service and competitive rates. From the beginning, everything was very professional; Judy S visited our home and gave an overview of the service and inquired about other things we might possibly need (mail, plants, etc). She also asked about our pets' special needs (none in our case) and became familiar with the location of food, litter, treats, toys, etc. The service we received was fantastic -- we received updates daily/every other day (sometimes with photos) and never had any doubt that our pets were in the best of hands. When we returned home, the litter box was sparkling clean, and our cats didn't have that typical starved-for-attention-for-days attitude that they give us when we're only gone overnight. I would highly recommend Snaggle Foot for your pet care needs!

I left my cats worried, but Michele so relieved that. Took such good care, gave me updates, went above and beyond to make sure they were ok! I was so impressed by her, her caring loving heart for our "kids". I would so so keep her as our permanent pet sitter. A joy being able to leave and finally not worrying. She is awesome!!!! Blessed we found her!

Leaving our fur-babies for a long weekend was a hard decision, but once I met our sitter, Lesley, I knew our kids would be in great hands! Not only did we get updates on her online portal of when she completed visits, but each time Lesley was with the dogs, we got pictures of each of them! It was really a great experience from start to finish, and I could not have been happier! I certainly know who we will call in the future to watch our kids! THANK YOU, LESLEY!

I have two cats. One is a cranky territorial male who can be hostile to strangers. I have had several cat sitters who were intimated by him and needed to have a water gun handy to deal with him. But Kim, who has worked with feral cats, knew just how to handle him. Her calm demeanor (and treats) went a long way to forge a trust that allowed her to come into the house and take care of both my cats. I would definitely hire her again!

Tara was wonderful! She sent me photos of my horses and texted me while she was at my house caring for them. It really gave me piece of mind that they were happy and healthy while I was away.

Wonderful, caring person who just loves animals and is knowledgeable about their ways, needs, likes and dislikes. Finding someone to look after four-legged family when you go away is not easy because few will love and care for them enough to make up your absence. My little cat's body language in response to Ros, however, is a give-away that she's lavished him with love and attention when looking after him: he is entirely comfortable with Ros and always delighted to see her. In the past I've put my cat into boarding (never again), and I've tried 4 other different drop-in or stay-over cat-sitters to look after him (with variable success - when I've got home it's clear that he wasn't given much attention). Now it's such a relief to have Ros look after him when I have to travel.

Perfect! Amazing! Above and beyond! Andrea is forever welcome in our home and will be our forever pet sitter! We have three crazy dogs and going on vacation is hard, we don't enjoy kenneling our dogs and having family take all three is a hassle so we decided to try to find a pet sitter and couldn't be happier. We were nervous having a stranger come to our home, especially with one of my dogs being aggressive towards new people and one being only six months old but after meeting Andrea, we knew she could handle it. Andrea responded immediately to all my texts and sent me videos of the dogs and I didn't even ask! She made us feel so comfortable that our home and dogs were taken care of and allowed us to enjoy our vacation. The best part of all when we came home the dogs were tired out and we could all relax before our busy schedules started again. Thank you so much, Andrea!!!!

Jessica's way to deal with horses always impresses me. In addition to providing a thorough and precise service, she truly cares about horses, and she is able to establish a relationship with them from the beginning. I have two spirited warmbloods, one of which was a stallion until a few months ago, and an older rescue mare in constant need of care. When I leave for business, Jessica handles them. She puts on blankets, boots, fly masks and such, turn them out, check them for problems, makes sure they are always provided with whatever they need. All my horses, who are not the easiest horses to manage, like her very much, trust her, and are always willing to do what she asks them.Jessica keeps me constantly informed on their situation, and time and again she went the extra mile to ensure they were well. I define the service Jessica provides to my horses as outstanding, and definitely recommend her as a skilled and trustworthy horse assistant.

Although I had to cancel the services I needed with Teri due to an unforeseen event, Teri was very responsive to emails and phone calls. We met in person - she is very personable. I would defiantly contact her again if I need to have a pet sitter again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

      • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
      • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
        • 45-minute visit: $28.
        • 60-minute visit: $32.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
        • 12 hours: $100.
        • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
