Shane was great. Prompt to respond (I had to push back the appointment by a week because of a family emergency so we went back and forth quite a bit) and a prompt arrival this morning. Told him we just needed a sink and faucet removed / replaced with a new ones. Well, somehow we ended up with a faucet that wouldn't work. Shane offered to go to Home Depot and got us a new one, same finish, that actually worked. He then needed another part and again, went out to grab it. Ended up being there much longer than expected, charged us for the parts only, everything looks great. So appreciate everything he did. Truly went above and beyond. Have a sink and faucet we need for the downstairs bathroom (that I'll be picking out myself this time so it will be the correct size, Shane, I promise) that we would like to use him for again!

John is very accommodation and made everything look good under a budget while meeting and exceeding my expectations! The job wasn't easy, he had to repair mistakes made by previous contractors. New sub floors and flooring, trim, cabinets, drywall and repairs, plumbing of the toilet and sinks and vanities. It's a very old apt and nothing is square or even but he made it look fresh and new!

I knew from day one that I selected the right contractor when Alby himself as the owner was on the job the entire time working side by side with his crew. The workmanship was first class. Alby paused at the end of each phase of the project to review the work with me to make sure it was to my satisfaction before he proceeded to the next phase. The final price was very competitive to the other 6 quotes that I solicited from other contractors. I would highly recommend Alby's Masonry and plan to use them for future jobs.

After owning our home for over 40 years we were finally ready to remodel the original 1956 master bathroom. We interviewed 4 other contractors before meeting with "For-U-Builders" who seemed to share our vision for transforming our obsolete bathroom into a masterpiece of timeless design combined with quality craftsmanship. Each member of their team, from the owner to the sub-contractors approached the job with professionalism and enthusiasm, along with the in-house coordinator who communicated almost daily with ordering & scheduling details, assuring that the project was well orchestrated from start to finish. We couldn't be happier with the results and feel fortunate to have had this firm complete our dream bathroom on time and at a reasonable (middle of the range) cost. We will surely be using them again for our future projects.

Julio is the best! He was super responsible and very willing to work with our crazy schedule, even came by on a Sunday one time to take care of a non-urgent job in our bathroom. He also did some excellent work for my parents. My family and my parents have finally found their go-to Plumber. I’m recommending Julio to all my extended family and friends. Hire him and you’ll be happy not only with the work product, but just by meeting such a great, hard-working guy. Thanks Julio!

I worked with Bharti for the design of my personal executive office space.  We agreed on a flat fee rate, which I found to be desirable so that I could include the fee in the budget and not be surprised at the end.  Bharti visited the space, received input on my ideas and tastes, and then created a visual plan with suggested colors, furniture placement, window treatments, etc.  Her initial plan was right on and she made recommendations that were consistent with what I liked, but also offered things that I had not thought of, which is what you hope for in using a designer.  Bharti also arranged for contractors to complete painting, etc. and was helpful in moving the project along.  She is delightful to work with, thorough, professional, and goes above and beyond in seeing the project to completion. When my wife saw the office, she couldn’t believe the transformation; it is very warm and inviting. We were so pleased with Bharti, we have asked her to design some rooms at our home as well. I enthusiastically recommend Bharti for your interior design needs!

This was my first time hiring David for a project to install backsplash in my kitchen. To start out, David's communication throughout the entire project was excellent. He was on time each day and thoroughly cleaned up after himself after each day of work. I have been a homeowner for many years. Trying to find a contractor who communicates well, cleans up after themselves, shows up on time and completes project on time is rare in the industry. To top it off, David craftsmanship was excellent. He was detail oriented and would not closeout the project until he thought each detail was perfect; then confirming with me if the job was to my satisfaction. I would definitely recommend David for work. GREAT JOB DAVID!

From day one Paulino was very responsive to any inquiry I had about the job. He was professional throughout. Due to traffic conditions he was a few minutes behind schedule but he gave me adequate notice of the delay. He was meticulous with the job (interior door installation), completed the job in a timely manner and cleaned up after completion. I highly recommend Paulino Home improvement to anyone who is looking for a door installer!

After several false starts with other friends and companies, Nick came to the rescue and did an excellent bathroom tiling job. He arrived when he said he would, cleaned up each day, and was an all around nice person to deal with - all that in addition to doing fabulous tile work on my tub surround. I give him my highest rating. Thanks!

After years of procrastinating, I finally decided to have my badly worn kitchen floor re tiled. Through Thumbtack.com, I was introduced to Mike Flagge and several other contractors. I had a choice to make and I am so glad that I hired Mike for the job. All of his work was extremely well done. His years of experience and craftsmanship were obvious. He was highly motivated, energetic and very cordial throughout his time here. My new kitchen floor is better than I anticipated.

I hired Mike to renovate our family room to give it an updated look. Work included taking down old dark paneling, new sheet-rock, taping, painting, new trim around the base of the room and around the windows, installing 3 new windows and a new slider door. Mike was timely and consistent from beginning to end, from phone calls and emails to showing up when he said he would be there. His work was priced fairly and his attention to detail is something I admire. I can't stress enough how clean he kept the room while working. Always using drop cloths and vacuuming everyday before he left. I get tons of compliments of our new updated room and I would highly recommend Goodman Building Company! I have already talked to Mike about the next few projects, updating my kitchen and bathroom in a few months!

Originally selected very large contractor with great examples of work and competitive bid only to be very disappointed. Let's just say legal action needed to stop work and we were gun shy selecting a new contractor but ultimately decide on Pro Home Builders. What a world of difference: much more personal attention, subcontractors that took pride in their work, helpful advice and suggestions from the owner, Victor, himself. Wealth of experience that he offers that is invaluable. He identified some structural issues (sloping/crooked support beam) from original builder and worked to rectify them quickly at fair price. Scope of work included replacing poorly installed and kinked HVAC flexpipe with hard conduits for better laminar flow, redoing hardwood floors properly, whole house repainting (so much better quality work), replacing trim, and remodeling bathroom. Don't be fooled by large companies (may promise you world but just subcontract you to lowest bidders or drag your project on forever) or the lowest bid. Pro Home Builders will give you fair competitive price, but more importantly great work that they take pride in (something clear to us after meeting many of the folks working on the house). You can't go wrong just meeting with Victor and getting his thoughts and advice on your project, chances are you'll find he's the right person to trust your home to.

We had the pleasure of working with Mark Troiano from CJT Development to build our custom new house. He is everything you would want in your contractor. He made great suggestions and helped keep us stay within our budget. When we met with him to go over out blueprints he came back with ways we could save money and not lose the integrity of our dream home. He did an amazing job sticking to the time table that we discussed previous to starting our build. Mark does an amazing job of explaining the process of everything and stayed in constant contact with us throughout the entire project. He was always available to answer our questions whether it be in person, on the phone, text or email. Mark was always willing to help out where ever it was needed. He is hard working and honest and works with quality subcontractors. Our house came out beautiful and the quality is amazing. I would highly recommend Mark to do any project, and would hire him again in the Here is a link to our home on Houzz http://www.houzz.com/projects/1482269

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
