Cathy came in a timely matter. She did an excellent job with my dog. The dog was the first time she had a private groomer. Cathy kept my dog quiet by just talking and the dog settled down. I have already signed up for another visit. Very pleased Maureen Riley

I think she is great. Our first visit was canceled due to an unforseen situation of my husband was on life support fighting for his life, but it did not stop her from answering my questions regarding my dog's behavior. She is caring and cares about what she does. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a dog trainer.

Incredibly professional and also one of the most knowledgeable dog trainers i have ever met. Her ability to understand our needs was only exceeded by the one thing genuineness by which she engaged us and our dogs. We have 5 dogs . One of the dogs ,Jake, is a rescue and has just been introduced to the family. Being a male, there were some issues with introducing him to the other male, Baxter. Niamh adressed the problem immediately and educated us on how to continue the process. She is also available any time we need her and if not at that moment- she will return the call / text as soon as possible. We look so forward to continuing our relationship with her and having her continue to educate and assist us with all of our training needs. It is amazing to have an incredible Dog Trainer but it is even more amazing to have an incredible educator as well.

Joyce is fantastic!! My husband and I had a three-month old wheaten terrier puppy when we hired Joyce. We were looking for help with potty training, basic obedience, leashing walking and helping our little guy become a part of our family. We cannot say enough positive things about what Joyce and her training methods have done for us. Our puppy was at ease immediately with Joyce and loves his training sessions. He has come leaps and bounds in his training using her easy to follow methods and improves after every session. After a few short months, he follows commands, is almost house broken and actually listens to us now! Joyce is professional, flexible with scheduling, kind, and very affectionate with our puppy. It's obvious how much she is a natural with animals. We also use Joyce for boarding when traveling. We are confident that our puppy is in safe, capable and loving hands when he spends time at Joyce's house with her (and Corcega!). She'll even send photos, videos and multiple daily calls and texts with updates for you, the individual service she provides for your pup is so much better than doggie daycare. If you are looking for a dog trainer, dog walker or a happy place for your dog when you're away on vacation, we highly recommend Joyce and her services to any dog owner.

When I found Christine on Thumbtack, I was at the end of my rope. My boyfriend and I had adopted a 1 year old American bulldog mix from a rescue in NY and were having trouble getting him to listen to us or bond with us, were experiencing a lot of behavioral issues and even some aggression and were considering bringing him back because we felt we were in over our heads. We had reached out to the rescue we adopted him from for help finding a trainer and they kept blowing us off. The rescue claimed to have spent donor money on his training, but all he had really learned was how to get treats and would not even do basic commands like sit or stay if food wasn't in the picture. Finally, in desperation, I googled dog trainers in my area and thumbtack popped up. I filled out a form and within minutes I received a reply from Christine DiCarlo at Canine Communications. I emailed her and she said I could call her any time so I did so immediately. Over the phone she could sense how desperate I felt and she drove an hour to come meet with us. She immediately assessed the situation and explained to me what was going on and how to fix it. We have been working with her for about 6 weeks and both humans and dogs are doing much better and have settled into our new lives. We even adopted another rescue puppy and Christine told me exactly how to introduce the pup to the dog and the home, thus saving us future problems. There have been a couple of desperate phone calls to Christine and every time I'm freaking out, she talks me off the ledge and everything settles back down. Without Christine, I don't think we would have gotten through the rough patches. She has trained me in what to do to have well behaved and secure dogs and in how to read my dogs because before her, I have to admit, I was clueless and an emotional wreck. We are all so lucky to have found her and her services. She really cares about us and our dogs, she knows what she's doing and she has saved my family and my sanity!

Simply said, Ivan is amazing. He is extremely knowledgeable, has a way with animals and just exudes confidence! Our dog needed all of those traits to respond to learning. Ivan taught us how to portray those traits to our dog which has helped with careyover of training. The biggest thing we have learned is that if you think you have spent enough time training your dog, think again. It takes many small sessions done daily with consistency and focus to get a dog to respond, and when it happens its so gratifying. Ivan has helped us become better owners! We have aways to go but am confident with Ivan's guidance we will get there. As a trianer Ivan is generous with his time, offers many training packages, a fair price, and always gives "extra". If your thinking about hiring a dog trainer this is the one!

Debbie was wonderful! She clearly cares very much for dogs and it shows through her work. She’s very knowledgeable, helpful and sweet. We have worked with many different trainers and my pup was the most comfortable around Debbie. That’s the most important to me.

I was tired of my dog Nancy' behavior. I know she had all those behaviour problem because we all family members have been pampering her since we had her. We love her a lot but there is always a limit how long you can bear someone. She was totally out of control and we were warned to vacant the apartment because of her unnecessary barking, scratching and impulsiveness. We were totally hopeless when we contacted Nikhil and told him our problems. Nikhil hear us very patiantly and said dont worry. I will help Nancy to be a good pet. Honestly, I am surprised how someone can change a dog's behavior in just fifteen days just by instructing it some commands and actions. He made our life easy. We highly recommend nikhil for dog training.

Brad is simply amazing! I can't explain how pleased I was after my baby, Nala, went through the board & train. Everyday he was sending me photos and videos of her progress, and even when I finally picked her up, his work far exceeded my expectations! I would highly recommend this service to everyone who is in the market for a dog trainer! You'll regret otherwise.

Katrina is an amazing dog trainer. She truly understands dogs and all of their weird quirks. My chihuahua mix is very stubborn and doesn't exactly like everyone but he LOVES Katrina! She is responsible, trust worthy and my dog adores her. If you need pet sitting or dog training she is definitely your go to girl!

Sean perfored quite exellently compared to the previous trainer we had. Sean takes a different approach compared to your average "run of the mill" dog trainer. Most dog trainers will take a overly positive approach to training dogs, but as i have learned, this approach does not always work, especially when we are trying to solve behavioral issues. Waving treats in front of a dogs face might be perfect for getting them to do entertainment for guests, but when it comes time to prevent biting, barking, scratching and more, a more nuetral approach is necessary. Sean uses techniques much like Cesar Millan (the dog whisperer) and in our case was able to produce results the very first day! He addresses problems calmly and asseses the situation before deciding what actions to take. He talked about how mothers would treat behavioral problems in dogs, and strives to treat problems similairly to the mother, as this provides lasting change. And let me tell you, the change was lasting!

Perfect! Amazing! Above and beyond! Andrea is forever welcome in our home and will be our forever pet sitter! We have three crazy dogs and going on vacation is hard, we don't enjoy kenneling our dogs and having family take all three is a hassle so we decided to try to find a pet sitter and couldn't be happier. We were nervous having a stranger come to our home, especially with one of my dogs being aggressive towards new people and one being only six months old but after meeting Andrea, we knew she could handle it. Andrea responded immediately to all my texts and sent me videos of the dogs and I didn't even ask! She made us feel so comfortable that our home and dogs were taken care of and allowed us to enjoy our vacation. The best part of all when we came home the dogs were tired out and we could all relax before our busy schedules started again. Thank you so much, Andrea!!!!

I highly recommend Doug if you need ANY type of dog training. I rescued my 75lb young pitbull last August and went through 2 trainers before I started with Doug. This dog used to drag me around on walks, had no manners, wanted to eat my cats, and has a very high energy level. We did 5 lessons with Doug and Chelsea and my dog has changed more in the last 6 weeks than he has since I rescued him a year ago! Today I took him to the food truck festival in Hartford and he stayed right by my side, and didn’t even jump on the people who stopped to pet him. Also this evening we tried a little off leash on our walk and he stayed very close. I never thought I would be able to walk him without him pulling me or control him around my cats thanks to Doug and Chelsea I can take my dog anywhere and not worry about being that person who can’t control their dog!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
