I can't say enough good things about our experience with Milton. If you read nothing else of this review, Milton and his team are extraordinarily professional, efficient, clean, considerate, extremely pleasant people to work with and they held our hands throughout the whole process, accommodating multiple changes to the original plan! And it was affordable! My boyfriend and I wanted to order a whole apartment's worth of furniture from IKEA and had no idea how the process worked- but we had an extremely tight timeline and needed it delivered and assembled early the following week. Milton walked us through every step, was available to assemble everything on a day that worked for us (it was a Thursday or Friday when we spoke to Milton and he came on the next Tuesday), and when we had what felt like endless issues with IKEA delivery, Milton and his staff offered up multiple solutions and were extremely flexible (they ended up picking up all of the furniture from our friend's apartment- in the evening and on very short notice!). In the days leading up to the move, Milton or a staff member responded immediately to all of my texts and calls (many of which were sent over the weekend). When it came time to assemble, Milton and his coworker were precise and clean, breaking down and getting rid of over 60 boxes before we even got to the apartment. They set up all of the furniture based off of a very rough drawing I sent to them. They also agreed to mount our TV and to receive our mattress delivery and unpack that, both of which weren't originally requested. If you have any concerns about using an outside company to assemble your furniture, Milton is absolutely the way to go. I can't imagine that anyone else in the business works as carefully and is as accommodating as these guys.

I hired Upholstery Works to reupholster my 2 leather dinning room chairs. I wanted a change of color and fabric. I met Arturo to view samples of fabrics. Arturo came to me and was very professional, helpful and very responsive. The quality of work was excellent. I couldn’t believe how beautiful my chairs looked and how perfect the fabric looked. The chairs were dropped off in my house which was awesome and worked out with my busy schedule. I will definitely recommend this company. I thank Upholstery Works for making my chairs look beautiful and go so well with my new home decor.

I had an outside hot water heater where the old door just completely fell apart and off the hinges completely. We couldn't afford to buy a custom door right now and so Bob did an amazing "MacGuyver" job and found out a way to fix up and rehang the door using the existing one-and it looks great. We also had a heavy gate that was off its hinges and he knew just what to do to get it back on track. While he was here he even tightened up the other matching gate (even without me asking-very nice). We also had a large front door hanging lantern that my husband could not get to work but Bob figured that out too. And on top of that he was extremely nice, went out of his way to make sure I was happy, and his charges were more than fair. I would definitely recommend him for so many things around the house--will for sure hire him again!

Working with Bharti was very helpful in decorating my living/dining room. We had moved into a new house and our furniture was old and did not fit well into our new space. Bharti came and measured everything and formed ideas about what our preferences were. Then she drew up a few very detailed plans to help me visualize the different things we could do with our space. She helped me to pick paint colors, curtains and rods, sofas, rugs, chairs, etc. Now my room is beautiful and many friends have complimented our new look. Bharti was also pleasant to work with. She was timely in her responses and patient when I was indecisive. She is a professional designer and can guide you through your project with ease. I can recommend hiring Bharti for your designing needs.

Jenny is incredible to work with, and has absolutely excellent taste. I have my own business as a stylist-- The Brazen Beauty Movement-- and my home needed to reflect my taste level. I was overwhelmed and didn't know what to do. Frankly, I was in pain over it. Jenny's exquisite eye and selection of high quality furniture has transformed my home into a stylish place where I can entertain guests and feel great about myself.

It is with much confidence that I highly recommend Darlene Cohen of Design Cache Interiors, to you for your decorating & interior design needs. Darlene worked with me to design my apartment in Trump Plaza, NYC, which was a challenging space in several areas, due to size. However, Darlene was able to come up with a great plan, layout, color scheme, which has made for a beautiful look that works perfectly! I would highly refer Darlene for any size home, office or apartment, as she certainly has a great eye and is on point - spot on in what I wanted my apartment to look & feel like. Leslie S.

When I first met with Jody I had no idea what to expect out of this whole experience. I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I had just purchased our new home and had planned to do some MINOR renovations which we couldn't wait to get started on. We knew we needed to bring someone in to help us because this was our dream home and we wanted it to be perfect. I sat down with Jody and showed her our plans and right away she was throwing ideas my way and giving me that vision that I just couldn't grasp on my own. I'm not sure if it was her expertise of the trade or her amazing personality that made me feel so comfortable but we clicked right away and I basically hired her on the spot. Fast forward a month or so and our MINOR renovations unexpectedly left us with a chimney and some walls(that also ended up being torn down.) My husband and I were in a panic and had no idea how we were going to manage this project but thanks to Jody we did and we now live in the home of our dreams. Jody helped with every little detail of our home. She sat with us for hours going over floor plans, different furniture lay outs, looking at tiles, fabrics, wall coverings, different finishes for all our appliances/furniture, window treatments, lighting, carpets, wood floor samples and stains. You name it she did it! She perfected each paint color in our home to a point where we get compliments all the time on how nicely everything flows and how beautiful all the colors are. She knew our style from some images she requested I send her and from there on she was on point with every little detail of our home. When we weren't loving something..which was rare... she would always say "You can't like it, you have to LOVE it..we will find something else, don't rush!" And she would do just that, sometimes by the next day. I am an extremely indecisive person and Jody was always so patient with me. She would come to our house with a ton of samples, I would make a decision and then call her before she had even gotten home to tell her I wasn't sure if I made the right choice. She would laugh, because at this point she already knew that phone call was coming and she always said "Don't rush, I will find some other options and you let me know what you want to do." And she did just that and ironically I would always go with what she had originally chosen to show us. We would text her at all hours of the day/night with images and thoughts and she always got back to us within no time at all and always reassured us that our home was going to be perfect and that there was nothing to worry about. Our conversations more than likely ended up totally off topic and we would end up chatting for a while about everyday stuff which was also something I always appreciated and admired about her. No matter how busy her life was, she made time for us and our project. Jody put us in contact with a ton of great vendors and held our hands throughout the way with each one of them. If there was a mix up in our order I would call her and within minutes she had already contacted the vendor and got back to us with an answer/solution. She would go out of her way to pick up items that we needed and would deliver them to us right away and the same went for if we needed to return something to a vendor. There was never a favor we asked of her that she said no to and at times I don't know how she did it with a smile on her face because we were extremely needy! Jody helped us achieve the home of our dreams and we will forever be grateful for all of her hard work. We love working with her and will continue to do so for all the smaller decorative details of our home and we plan on asking for her expertise again when we fill up our other spare bedroom. She made our home building/decorating experience fun and less stressful, we truly don't know how we would have done it without her. Besides Jody being the best at what she does: she is personable, kind, witty and extremely down to earth and an absolute pleasure to work with. I'd say her only flaw is that she is a Boston Red Sox fan :)

Jimmy was a constant professional and down right nice guy. My apartment renovation came out great. Jimmy and his crew were professional, clean, courteous to working in a Co-op regulations, friendly, and went above and beyond in completing my project. I will post pictures once I have them done since I'm still moving in, but I just wanted to put up a 5 star review as soon as I had an internet connection. Will recommend to all my family and friends, as well as the people in the building I'm living in.

I would highly recommend Marni for your interior decorating. I had a 300 sq ft apartment that needed everything and fast. She came out looked at it and measured everything out that same week. She had good ideas and listened to what I wanted and came up with different things for me to pick from. She was always there for me to talk to and was fast to get everything done. Everything is in the apartment in less than 3 weeks and looks great. I have worked with at least 5 other decorators on other homes in the past and have always run into some problems with them. I cannot tell you how easy and wonderful it was to work with Marni. I give her 6 stars out of 5!!

Soudi has an uncanny ability to quickly discern the the needs of her client. The existing assets, the desired change, the need or willingness to "push the envelope" on design while respecting the budget, were all accompanied by a very innovative and beautiful solution to the project. I love working with Soudi as she is full of life, energetic, imaginative and most of all makes me laugh. Designing and decorating with Soudi is a fun job. No job is too big - from architectural changes such as moving walls and adding bathrooms - or too small such as designing new window treatments. A mundane kitchen was transformed with changing entrance doors and adding unique cabinet designs and lighting. A bedroom was transformed with with minimal window shades and reframing existing artwork. Bathrooms had new fixtures, lighting and tile trim. The same can be said for every room in the condo that she completely renovated and furnished, all from 1000 miles away! She is truly Magic.

A Wicked Wand transformed by house from a 1990's throwback to a 2016 home ready for sale. My original plan called for a simple painting job but A Wicked Wand saw the potential and swept through the entire house, updating, painting ceilings and brickwork. The choice of colors was brilliant with each room flowing to the next, matching and contrasting with on-trend colors and detail work that home buyers were clamoring for. A Wicked Wand went even further, staging my home, adding lighting features, curtains and fresh flowers. In the end, my home was buyer ready and a joy to show. A Wicked Wand was the best thing to happen to my old house and I'm sure the transformation made all the difference in the eventual sale.

I am not one to normally go online and leave a review for a company, but we had the pleasure of working with Stephen and Gail, and after the wonderful experience we had with them, we felt strongly about doing so. We are now living in what is our NYC dream apartment....what they did for our space is outstanding, and we adored them as well...2 of the nicest and most talented people you could ever work with.

We had worked with other designers over the years and there was always a problem with communication. Helen helped us with our city apartment and our country house without any miscommunication . Working on a budget posed no problem for her. She intuitively understood our vision and provided options that we would happily live with for years to come. She is excellent at follow-thru and follow-up even after our project was completed.

Whitney helped us transform our living room into a comfortable space that we love. She recommended furniture to purchase as well as placement of our furniture (both new items as well as items we already had) so that we could maximize our space. Sometimes I can't believe how much bigger the room feels because of her recommendations! She has a wonderful sense of design but what I think makes Whitney special is that she takes time to understand who you are and how you want to use the space you're redesigning. She helps make your house a home. I highly recommend Whitney, I will definitely be using her for future projects!

I recently moved into a new home and needed to paint it from top to bottom. I hired Kelly and the color scheme-blues, grays, and taupes-works perfectly! She also recommended wallpaper that looks like wood for the vaulted ceiling in my bedroom and it looks awesome!!!

Over the past few months Natalie has transformed my living room, dining area, bedroom, and home office into a beautifully decorated home. She has the ability to design and decorate your home beautifully without making it look over decorated. Natalie and I discussed a realistic budget that she worked within and it was amazing the beautiful items she found in the less expense stores and she found beautiful, unique furniture that I was willing to spend more money on. I was very grateful that Natalie was willing to work around my schedule and was always on time. I was very impressed with Natalie's ability to work with the furniture I had and make it looked more updated by just adding pillows, throws, etc.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

      • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
      • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
        • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
      • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
        • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
      • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
      • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
